Following an identified issue with persistent youth nuisance, EastendHomes entered into a partnership in 2008 with Poplar HARCA and the East London Tabernacle church to provide youth work services. Youth services and nuisance continue to be a major issue for the estate. The estate has been identified as having a particularly high number of under-18s and EastendHomes has supported weekly play sessions on the estate hosted by the Play Association of Tower Hamlets and funded by Children in Need. The estate has excellent transport links being served by London Underground and bus routes to Central London, the City, Canary Wharf, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Westfield Centre at Stratford City. Recently a supply of the Mayor of London’s Bicycle stations, fondly nicknamed Boris Bikes, has been installed nearby. Bede Estate About the Estate At Mile End there are a variety of local shops, bars and restaurants. The Bede Estate has Mile End Park on its doorstep which provides a full range of leisure and sporting activities for all ages. There are a number of schools close by which are accessible by walking or bus- primary schools include Malmesbury, Guardian Angels, St. Paul’s with St. Lukes, Stebon and Wellington Way and local secondary schools include St Pauls Way, Central Foundation for Girls and Bow Boys. Regenerating the estate As part of the Estate Regeneration scheme, private housing developments are being built and new commercial units will be provided. A new community centre is being built on Joseph Street, where the local SureStart service will also be based, which will offer a range of activities for residents. The new centre is due to open in 2014. The estate has an active residents association whose committee members work closely with EastendHomes. A number of community-led activities for all ages take place on the estate, many of these hosted in a converted shop unit on the estate provided by EastendHomes. The regeneration programme to the estate included the construction of 82 new homes for rent by EastendHomes tenants alongside the creation of new homes for sale. Works to existing homes on the estate have commenced and will continue from 2013, including the replacement of stairwells, weather-proofing the underground garages and landscaping works to the communal areas. These are: • Work with the Council Youth Services and the ELT project (or other partners as identified) to provide youth services for the estate • Incorporate youth service provision into the operational delivery arrangements of the new community centre on the estate • Incorporate the community-led events taking place into the operational delivery arrangements of the new community centre • Reduce opportunities for ASB through changing the design of estate stairwells .
