October The 2020 Christian Link

Pastoral Letter committed to it and found fulfilment in it. John’s gospel tells us that many of his disciples decided to quit because his teachings were hard (i.e. the changes called for were too great). Jesus turned to the twelve What does October mean for you? For me it is a time and said “Do you also wish to go away?” Peter of change. The colours in the fields and lanes are a replied, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the beautiful display of golds, browns, greens and orange words of eternal life. We have come to believe and as the trees and bushes take on their Autumn glow. know that you are the Holy One of God”. So changing All the crops have been brought in and everyone is and following Jesus is a good change. getting ready for the harvest. This is as true today as it was 2000+years ago. Hopefully, our churches will be decorated, and our services ring out with songs of praise and May God bless you all and keep you safe thanksgiving, although this is by no means certain at this time. Schools, colleges and universities are back after the extra long break due to Covid19, with new Pam Knowles classes and new friendships being formed.

But for everyone, this year has been a series of changes, as the government and health officials try to find ways to slow down the spread and effects of Covid19.

But it hasn’t all been bad news. People have pulled together to look after the more vulnerable among us, and God’s commandment to “Love your Neighbour” has been evident all over the world.

It was truly wonderful as we had our first morning services in our churches at the beginning of September, but I wonder what our new “normal” will be at the end of this crisis.

Some changes are welcome and some are unwelcome, some we choose and some are just there, we have no real option. All of these are quite small changes compared with the sort of changes in the life of the disciples, when Jesus told them to leave their homes and families and follow him. I wonder how we would have coped. How would you feel if your son left for work, and didn’t return! Would you follow someone you didn’t know very well with only the clothes you wore – no money, no guarantee of food, and no knowledge of where you were going? How did the disciples feel?

Following Christ was no easy option, but they were all

News Burton Hoton Cotes Prestwold Christmas Shoeboxes

“Still going strong for 2020!”

That's what Teams4U, the charity to whom we donate our knitted items have said about this year's shoebox appeal, and of course our response is,

“So are we!”

We have been spending even more time knitting our hats, gloves, scarves, toys and bags over these last few strange months and we will be very happy to pass them on to our partners in the charity, sending them with our love to the children in areas of Eastern Europe who need our help this year more than ever.

We will be gathering at St Andrew’s Church, Prestwold at 11am on Weds 14th Oct to collect in all the lovely gifts and pass them on for shoebox filling. We may be able to meet in the Church itself with coffee and biscuits, or we may be socially distancing in the car park catching hats and gloves thrown from 2 metres, but whatever happens we hope to be there with a smile and a chat to continue our support of this great charity work.

I would like to make a special mention of our lovely friend Joyce Parker who has sadly passed away recently. Joyce was a knitting superstar who, along with her daughter Jean, produced mountains of knitted goodies for us and also donated plentiful other shoebox fillers over the 14 years we have been associated with the shoebox appeals. Literally thousands of children will have received a gift of warmth and love from Joyce. We will miss her cheery smile and friendship, and extend our condolences to Jean and family.

So, don't forget to come along with your knitted goodies on Oct 14th at 11am.

Remember....we're “Still going strong!”

Walton on the Christine Greenall Wolds Parish Council

Walton on the Wolds Parish Council met via Zoom on Tuesday 8th September. Present were Councillors Brian Parker (Chair), Mark Watson (Vice-Chair), David Gilmour, Stephen Foster and Christine Greenall. Also in attendance were Parish Council Clerk Cheryl Hall, Borough Councillor Jenny Bokor and County Councillor Richard Shepherd.

Borough Councillor Jenny Bokor gave an update of the situation on Covid-19 within Charnwood highlighting the fact that students are due to return to the University this week and the potential risk that this entailed. She also explained the plans to create a multi-use area in the Market Square. It was noted that an appeal against any planning agreement for the proposed development at the Hawker Siddeley site near Burton on the Wolds had been lodged.

County Councillor Richard Shepherd also highlighted that an upsurge in cases of CV-19 was to be expected and that a Highways assessment visit had been made to the Hawker Siddeley site. He also informed the Council that the planning application from British Gypsum was back with the company to consider any further application. In further planning issues it was noted that an Environmental Impact Statement was to be obtained on the proposed 1600 houses development at Six Hills.

The council discussed communication with parishioners. It was felt that while the Facebook page and new WhatsApp group were both working well and The Link reached many parishioners, a newsletter for the parish was desirable and would be continued now that printing facilities were once more available.

The situation with litter was considered by the council and this continues to be monitored with an increase having been noted while local tip access has been restricted.

Other issues discussed included Highways Verge and Grass cutting rotas, blocked ditches and footpath and jitty maintenance. Ownership of the village jitty from Poplar Hill needs to be established. Drains are due to be cleaned this month (September).

The question of traffic calming, speeding and parking were also raised. These are ongoing and advice form the County Council is being sought.

Thanks were expressed from the Council to Roger Brind who is stepping down from maintaining the Cemetery Grounds and the Small Green. His work of many years is much appreciated by all in the village.

The Council approved the draft accounts for 2019/20.

Finally the Council discussed the purchase of the Christmas Tree for The Green. This will be a substantial size and will be lit with all the available lights. The Tree will raise funds for the Air Ambulance.

The date of the next meeting was set for Tuesday 3rd November at 18:00.

NEW COVID RULES

From Monday September 14 no more than six people will be able to meet socially in any surroundings, meaning it will be illegal for a family of six to meet any of their relatives. Anyone breaking the rules will be liable to a £100 fine rising to £3,200 for repeat offenders.

As well as the new six-person rule, there will be a new crackdown on pubs that flout Covid security rules, policed by “Covid marshals”, and increased spot-checks on people in quarantine. The new marshals will be charged with helping to ensure social distancing in town and city centres. Fines will be levied against hospitality venues that fail to ensure that their premises remain Covid-secure. I have now seen a Policeman walking the beat in our villages, checking venues

Freshers events at universities have all been cancelled; crowds are out and bubbles are in. The new guidance outlaws any social gathering larger than six people inside or outdoors and it is possible a national curfew may be instituted. If anyone thinks this is not now serious, then please think again. A 19 year old man was fined an instant £10,000 by the Police in Nottingham on Friday 11th September for breaking the existing Covid rule of no more than 30 in a social gathering. He had 50 !! This has now changed to no more than SIX (6) inside or out.

Many universities including Loughborough are already making plans to ensure students' safety. On a wider scale, students will be asked to consider the possibility of them spreading the disease to older age groups. Students will operate in bubbles for teaching and leisure The latest figures show that the age group 17-34 is seeing the highest increases in numbers of those affected. As a result, the Prime Minister has warned that students who fall ill will be asked not to travel home to prevent the spread of disease.

Pubs and restaurants will only be able to take bookings of up to six people in line with the new rules. The six can be from multiple households. Hospitality venues can have more than six people inside in total, but customers on individual tables must not exceed that number. However, they must be at tables and not standing at bars. The rules differ from previous guidelines in that police have powers to enforce them, and businesses will be expected to as well. Individuals who fail to comply can be handed a £100 fine, doubling with each offence, to a maximum of £3,200. Operators will also be required to collect details for track and trace; previously, it was merely guidance. Business that fail to ensure their premises adhere to the new rules face fines.

The exemptions to the new Covid rules

Support bubbles Households or support bubbles of more than six people are exempt from the new rules. Support bubbles allow adults who live by themselves and single parents with children under 18 to join up with one other household. This means they can do things such as visit their house, stay the night and travel together in vehicles. Weddings These will still be allowed to go ahead, with ceremonies and receptions of up to 30 people permitted. However, they must be conducted in a Covid-secure way. Guests will have to stand or sit at least one metre apart, as well as taking other safety precautions. Funerals These can continue to occur, with 30 people allowed to pay their respects. Schools and offices Schools and workplaces continue to operate under existing Covid guidelines, which include year groups being kept in bubbles, classrooms reconfigured and masks worn in communal areas.
