    The 18th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival runs from 29 November to 7 December 2019 12 BIG NAMES FROM WORLD CINEMA IN CONVERSATION WITH MARRAKECH AUDIENCES Rabat, 14 November 2019. The “Conversation with” section is one of the highlights of the Marrakech International Film Festival and returns during the 18th edition for some fascinating exchanges with some of those who create the magic of cinema around the world. As its name suggests, “Conversation with” is a forum for free-flowing discussion with some of the great names in international filmmaking. These sessions are free and open to all: industry professionals, journalists, and the general public. During last year’s festival, the launch of this new section was a huge hit with Moroccan and internatiojnal film lovers. More than 3,000 people attended seven conversations with some legendary names of the big screen, offering some intense moments with artists, who generously shared their vision and their cinematic techniques and delivered some dazzling demonstrations and fascinating anecdotes to an audience of cinephiles. After the success of the previous edition, the Festival is recreating the experience and expanding from seven to 11 conversations at this year’s event. Once again, some of the biggest names in international filmmaking have confirmed their participation at this major FIFM event. They include US director, actor, producer, and all-around legend Robert Redford, along with Academy Award-winning French actor Marion Cotillard. Multi-award-winning Palestinian director Elia Suleiman will also be in attendance, along with independent British producer Jeremy Thomas (The Last Emperor, Only Lovers Left Alive) and celebrated US actor Harvey Keitel, star of some of the biggest hits in cinema history including Thelma and Louise, The Piano, and Pulp Fiction.

Ademais, como cada ano premiamos a dous persoeiros relevantes no mundo do cinema internacional. Fernando Trueba, gañador dun Oscar e que este ano repite nesa cerimonia co filme «O baile da vitoria», que estrearemos en Cineuropa, e Mabel Rivera, actriz galega comprometida, valente e preocupada polas situacións inxustas que percibe ao seu redor.     Days of Glory and Outside the Law: Counter-Historical Remembrances1 MOURAD el FAHLI INTRODUCTION French mainstream cinema has always celebrated and memorialized the resistance and heroism of white French soldiers and citizens, overlooking the decisive and vital contributions of the colonized to the independence of France and Europe in general from the Nazi regime. This erasure of the subaltern is the product of a Eurocentric History (with capital H) that “Appropriates the cultural and material production of non-Europeans while denying both their achievements and its own appropriation.” (Shohat and Stam 1994: pp 2, 3) Yet, via their films, French-Maghrebi filmmakers challenge and deconstruct such Eurocentric History through counter-filmmaking, screening a revisionist programme of alternative remembrance. This article will examine the ways Maghrebi diasporas in France through the example of Days of Glory and Outside the Law by Rachid Bouchareb re-represents and visualize their reality within France before and after its independence from the Nazi regime. The article will, thus, have three major sections. The first section revisits current debates on the rapport film, history and memory. It introduces the notion of historical remembrance in an attempt to depart from the dichotomy of memory/history. The second one examines French cinema in the occupation period; the purpose throughout is to illustrate the occultation of the Maghrebi soldiers and Africans in general from these narratives. The last section underlines the rewriting of History by French-Maghrebi filmmakers through the example of Rachid Bouchareb Days of Glory and Outside the Law. FROM MEMORY TO HISTORICAL REMEMBRANCE: Film theory and criticism have inherited the kind of questions and debates that characterized the other six arts; the relationship between artistic and historical narratives was- and is still-a major issue in these discussions.

OLIVIA AT THE LAEMMLE ROYAL | 11523 Santa Monica Blvd. Already underway and screening daily through Sept. 5 at the Laemmle Royal is a new digital restoration of Jacqueline Audry’s trailblazing 1951 feature Olivia, one of the first films, French or otherwise, to deal with female homosexuality. Set in a 19th-century Parisian finishing school for girls, the film depicts the struggle between two head mistresses (Edwige Feuillere and Simone Simon) for the affection of their students, and how one girl’s (Marie-Claire Olivia) romantic urges stir jealousy in the house. Audry, one of the key female filmmakers of post-World War II France, stages this feverish chamber drama (based on a novel by the English writer Dorothy Bussy) with a delicate yet incisive touch, allowing the story’s implicit sensuality to simmer ominously without boiling over into undue hysterics. Lesbian dramas would soon become more explicit, but few have matched Olivia’s unique combination of elegance and eroticism.     Rétrospective Patrice Chéreau 16 – 28 novembre 2016 À l’occasion du troisième anniversaire de sa disparition, La Cinémathèque française s’associe au Festival d’Automne à Paris, au Théâtre Amandiers-Nanterre, à l’Odéon Théâtre de l’Europe, ainsi qu’aux Universités de Paris I – Panthéon Sorbonne et Paris Sorbonne et au Lycée Louis-le-Grand, dans le cadre de la manifestation « Patrice Chéreau en son temps » Metteur en scène, scénariste et acteur, il signe son premier long-métrage à trente ans (La Chair de l’orchidée, 1974). Puis, devenu entretemps une figure incontournable du spectacle vivant européen, Chéreau offre à Simone Signoret l’un de ses derniers grands rôles avec Judith Therpauve (1978). L’école du Théâtre des Amandiers de Nanterre qu’il dirige est le creuset où se trouve et s’affirme une partie de la « troupe » qui lui sera fidèle. Par la suite, sa collaboration avec Hervé Guibert s’accomplit dans L'Homme blessé (1983). C’est aussi dès cette période qu’il commence à préparer sa célèbre fresque sur le massacre de la Saint Barthélémy, La Reine Margot (Prix du Jury à Cannes en 1994). Puis viendront le coup d’éclat de Ceux qui m'aiment prendront le train (1998), et ses dernières œuvres : Intimité, Son frère, Gabrielle, Persécution. Last month saw the culmination of our 40th anniversary celebrations here at Filmhouse, and it has been hugely interesting time (for me at any rate!) comparing the us of now with the us of then. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed spending time talking to Filmhouse’s first Artistic Director, Jim Hickey, and finding out in more detail than I knew what myriad ways the business of running Filmhouse has stayed the same and the as many ways it has not (one of these days I’ll write it all down and you can find out how interesting it is for yourselves!). UK film distribution itself has changed immeasurably – the dawn of the multiplex in the latter half of the 1980s saw to that. Back in 1978, Filmhouse itself was part of a sort of movement that saw the birth of a number of similar venues around the UK whose aim was to show a kind of cinema (predominantly foreign language) that simply was not catered for within mainstream film exhibition. Despite 40 years having passed and much having changed, the notion of an audience-driven, ‘curated’ cinema like Filmhouse remains something of a film exhibition anomaly; and something Jim Hickey wrote 30+ years ago rings just as true today as it did then: “But best of all, the new cinemas are being run by those who care about audiences as well as the films that they have paid to watch.” Now, we’ve got a bit of a first for you in November, for we have metaphorically got into bed with Netflix to give one of their films a hugely deserved, exclusive, short run in a cinema – namely David Mackenzie’s splendidly entertaining Robert the Bruce epic, Outlaw King.
