POLICY It is the policy of the Providence Police Department to specify the caliber, type of ammunition, and lethal and less-lethal weapons for on-duty and off-duty use and to provide adequate training in the use of such weapons. Only Department-issued or Department-authorized weapons shall be carried by officers whenever they are either on-duty or off-duty.     Names, Vol. 37, No.1 (March 1989) The Naming of Moscows in the USA Irina Vasiliev Abstract Since 1800, at least forty-seven populated places in the United States have borne the name Moscow. The reasons for having been so named fall into four classes of placename type: commemorative, anticipatory, transfer, and mistake. The stories of these communities and their namings tell much about the growth of this country, the flow of in- formation within it, and each community's perception of itself. ***** The names Berlin, London; Moscow, and Paris evoke images of European sophistication and Old World charm. Here in the United States, these and other European and classical names have been applied as place names to communities that bear no resemblance to the original cities. We have all seen. them on our road maps: the Romes and the Petersburgs, the Viennas and Madrids. They have become commonplace to us. And there are many of each of them: not just one Rome, but thir- ty-five; not just one Cairo, but twenty-one. So the questions come up: Why were these communities named what they were? Who·were the people behind the naming? What were the reasons for the names they chose? It would be too large a task to examine all of the Old W orldnames that have been used across the United States in the last two hundred years. However, I have been able look at one name and determine the reasons for its widespread use. The name that I have chosen to look at is Moscow.

The value of firearms and fired ammunition evidence will depend, to a significant degree on the recovery and submission techniques employed at the shooting event or later during autopsy. Trace evidence adhering to surfaces should be collected and submitted to the appropriate agency. This submission guideline is designed to assist you in your laboratory examination request decisions. Any situation not sufficiently explained to your specific needs may be handled on an individual basis by contacting the laboratory at (317) 327-3670 or the Firearms Section Supervisor at (317) 327-3777. A. The following is a list of items most commonly submitted to the Firearms Section for analyses: 1. Firearms 2. Cartridge Cases 3. Cartridges 4. Fired Bullets / Fragments 5. Shotshells 6. Wads 7. Slug / Pellets 8. Victim’s Clothing B. The I-MCFSA Firearms Section can conduct the following analysis: 1. Examination of firearms for function and safety, including test firing in order to obtain test bullets, cartridge cases and shot shells. 2. Comparison of evidence bullets, fired cartridge cases and shot shells to determine if they were or were not fired by the same firearm or the submitted firearm. 3. Examination of fired bullets to potentially determine caliber and possible make and type of firearm involved. 4. Imaging and comparing fired cartridge cases and test shots from firearms to similar exhibits recovered in unsolved crimes utilizing the NIBIN system (see NIBIN Submission Guideline #14).

    “The First Rule of Gunfighting is Have a Gun”: Technologies of Concealed Carry in Gun Culture 2.0 Paper Presented at The Copeland Colloquium on “The Symbolic and Material Construction of Guns” Amherst College 3-4 March 2017 David Yamane Professor of Sociology Wake Forest University [email protected] In April 2016, the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) its second annual Concealed Carry Expo (CCX) at the Georgia International Conventional Center near Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta. The event is billed as “the nation’s only event dedicated to the CCW lifestyle” (see Figure 1). Although the idea of a “lifestyle” might seem to trivialize the practice of citizens carrying deadly weapons in public, the reality is quite the opposite. Over the course of three days, various seminars repeatedly stress the seriousness and importance of being a regular and responsible armed citizen. Figure 1. Flier for 2nd Annual USCCA Concealed Carry Expo 1 A seminar on the laws governing the use of lethal force in self-defense by attorney Andrew Branca is free and open to the public. Although it begins at 8:00am, the audience is literally standing room as the overflow spills out from the combined German 1 and 2 suites into the hallway. Branca later signs copies of the third edition of his book, The Law of Self-Defense, which the USCCA has licensed and is giving away free of charge to Expo attendees. Other seminars presented throughout the weekend cover concealed carry basics for beginners, hand-to- hand techniques to employ before using a firearm, mental preparation for self-defense, weapon retention, and gunshot wound treatment.
