Avenue Baptist Church July 2019 WHEELER AVENUE BAPTIST CHURCH JULY 2019 I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in THE Avenue my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and WORD let us exalt his name together. (kJV) Welcome to the best month of the year! Ok, I’ll admit it, the pastor, the Minister of Music and approximately 1,546 other members of our church (yes, I checked!) are a bit biased! Nevertheless, IN EVERY ISSUE bias or not, to God be the glory for granting us entry into the seventh month of 2019! For one month we have experienced the commencement of construction on our church campus. 2 To be sure, such an experience includes organized chaos, and we have had our fair share of it Happenings on over the past month. But, you are now reading the words of a grateful pastor to a great church the Avenue family that has handled every week of our ‘new norm’ with the grace that bespeaks the Wheeler Avenue Way! Thank you so much for your patience thus far. We understand that we have many months of this ‘new norm,’ so we must continue to be positive throughout the entire process. We are unapologetically a spiritual people! And spiritual people understand the responsibility to be 3 prayerful when chaos assails! For those who have been praying with us on Wednesday (whether in Christian Life the morning, the evening or both), I give God praise for you. To those who daily pray for peace and Advancement progress during this process, I remain grateful! And I must give thanks to God and each of you for maintaining your presence on The Avenue, despite the shifts that are so apparent around us. 4 Undoubtedly, these shifts have enhanced the excitement of VISION 2020! I am thrilled that our God Churchwide is proving to us that, no matter how long it takes, the vision will come to pass! We still have quite a News and way to go, so those alliterated admonitions will need to remain uppermost in our minds as we further Opportunities go: Be Patient! Be Positive! Be Prayerful! Be Present! And we’ll just watch our God continue to be our PROVIDER!!! 6 This month is filled with opportunities for discipleship, worship and fellowship. On Monday, July 8th, Adult Ministries we will begin our annual Vacation Bible School (VBS) experience. Of course, VBS on The Avenue is a family experience. We will have classes for all ages, and we invite every member of our church 6 family to come and bring someone with you. College, Youth On the last day of the month we will begin our annual Back to School (B2S) Revival, which is always and Children’s a “not-to-miss” event! We will have several guests coming to share with us in song and sermon, Ministries but on Friday night, our current Minister to Youth, Rev. Stephanie Joy Grigg and our immediate past Minister to Youth, now Minister of Christian Education, Dr. Joshua L. Mitchell, will preach a tag team sermon that you will not want to miss! Let’s encourage our children and youth, as well as experience 8 the edification that comes to all of us while in worship over those three nights! It’s going to be July Birthdays phenomenal! As I bring this missive to a close, let me offer one final word of thanks to the more than 600 of you (yes, I checked!) who made this preacher a proud pastor at Minute Maid Park when we shared a 12 great time of fellowship at the Astros game. Our choir was amazing, as usual! And I hope I didn’t Honoring Our embarrass you too badly with that first pitch. I’m simply grateful it made it to the catcher! (For the Graduates record, I was a BEAST...in practice!) Looking forward to a jubilant July...for the glory of God! Despite a long-lasting difficult economy, VIC-SW has been able to continue its pattern of growth and increased service. In fact, during the past five years: • The number of care receivers has increased from 112 to 309 • The number of volunteers has increased from 47 to 112 • The number of volunteer hours has increased from 2,466 to 3,586 • The number of volunteer miles driven has increased from 15,126 to 28,742 None of this would have been possible without our wonderful and dedicated volunteers. We stand in awe of the cheerful and loving service they provide to our care receivers, often going beyond the call of duty. This is the extra bonus that money can never buy and clearly shows the difference between VIC-SW and other for-profit providers of assistance to the frail and elderly. While increasing services is always our most import goal, in 2011, we also accomplished other goals: • We fully implemented our Special Transportation Program, using contracted taxicabs for special Our Mission circumstances when use of a volunteer is not practical. This may occur for especially long trips – such as from Fort Bend County to the Houston V.
