“This composition of our time and place embraces six billion people with their faces young and old, some being born and others dying, some white and many brown and yellow and black. Each one is a unique individual, they all aspire to live life, to use their talents, to support their families and care for their children and elders, to enjoy peace and security and to make tomorrow better.

Thanks to science and technology, human society is able to solve problems such as feed- ing the hungry, sheltering the homeless or developing more just conditions of life, but stubbornly fails to accomplish this. mAGiS AWARd Debra Eschmeyer Growing up on a dairy farm in rural Ohio, Debra Eschmeyer spent her days milking cows, weeding gardens and preparing family meals. This lifestyle ingrained in her at an early age an appreciation for how agriculture policy meets the plow. She merged that farming background with her dual degrees from Xavier—one in marketing and one in international affairs—and co-founded FoodCorps, a nationwide team of leaders that connects kids to real food and helps them grow up healthy. FoodCorps places these leaders in limited-resource communities for a year of public service where they conduct hands-on food education, build and tend school gardens, and facilitate getting high-quality local food into public school cafeterias. Now officially the vice president of external affairs for FoodCorps, Eschmeyer oversees the strategy, development, communications and government relations for the non-profit business to find ways to collaborate with diverse stakeholders to combat the epidemic of childhood obesity and food insecurity while nurturing the next generation of leaders. As a Food and Community Fellow with the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, and the Communications and Outreach Director of the National Farm to School Network, Eschmeyer also created One Tray, a successful national campaign to improve child nutrition by encouraging a more direct connection between local farms and federal nutrition programs. This, along with all her school food reform efforts, earned her the James Beard Foundation Leadership Award. Eschmeyer currently serves on the AGree Advisory Council and the Culinary Institute of America Sustainable Business Leadership Council. A go-to expert on food systems and policy, she works from her organic farm, Harvest Sun Farm, in Ohio.

LeAdeRShiP medALLion Charles Gallagher “Observe the turtle,” Charlie Gallagher likes to say. “It can’t make any progress unless it sticks its neck out.” Gallagher, a 1960 economics graduate, spent a lifetime sticking his neck out, taking risks and making a lot of progress. After turning around a number of struggling industrial businesses, he created his own private equity firm, Gallagher Enterprises, and managed more than 20 middle-market mergers, acquisitions and divestitures. He has saved companies and created jobs. But perhaps nobody—or no place—has benefitted more from Gallagher’s expertise and leadership than Xavier. He spent 20 very active years on the University’s Board of Trustees. He is, of course, the namesake of the Gallagher Student Center. He’s also the primary funder of the Conaton Learning Commons, which he chose to name in honor of former Board chairman and friend Michael Conaton. He also sponsored a scholarship program at Xavier called the Pacesetter Program in which he underwrote the education of inner-city students from his alma maters, St. Martin de Porres and Central Catholic High School in Toledo. It is, he says, more satisfying to give your treasures away than it is to accumulate them. He serves and has served on many boards throughout the community, including chairman of the Diane and Charles P. Gallagher Family Foundation; vice-chairman of the Board of the Denver Art Museum; vice-chairman of the Catholic Foundation for the Archdiocese of Denver; the Metropolitan State College of Denver Foundation; Lifetime Trustee of the Denver-Area Council Boy Scouts of America; Colorado UpLIFT; founder of ACE (Alliance for Choice in Education); National Jewish Medical and Research Center; Regis University; and Xavier. He also is currently, or has been a member of the Colorado Forum, Colorado Thirty Club, The Tower Club and Colorado Concern. He has been inducted to the Colorado Business Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Diane, reside in Cherry Hills Village, Colo., and have four married children and 17 grandchildren.

10 PAuL o’ConnoR, S.J. LeAdeRShiP AWARd Rose Ann Fleming, S.N.D. de N. For Sister Rose Ann Fleming, her life’s work was always about the students. “I try to make sure each student feels he or she is a special individual,” she once told The New York Times. “They need to understand that you really love them. If they know they’re loved, they’ll do almost anything to achieve.” As founder and manager of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services program in 1985, every men’s basketball player who has reached his final year of athletic eligibility has graduated, and the graduation success rate of all Xavier student-athletes is at 97 percent, which is now 12th best in the nation. Before arriving at Xavier in 1982 to teach English, she was head of Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati and President of Trinity College in Washington, D.C. Armed with six academic degrees—BA in English, Latin and social studies, MA in English, MEd, MBA, PhD in educational administration and JD in law—she is undeniably qualified and presents a commanding case for the power of education. She has a highly pleasant demeanor and a quick smile but an unbending willingness to discipline any athlete who dares defy her rules. The phenomenal success of her efforts has brought national recognition for both her and Xavier. She has been profiled in the New York Times, Washington Post, ABC News, NBC News and FoxSports among many others. She was named the Most Valuable Player on the men’s basketball team in 1991 and was inducted into Xavier’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. Now 81 years old, she still rises at 4:00 a.m., works out for an hour, then spends an hour in prayer in the campus apartment where she has lived since she came to Xavier. She works on her legal cases until 8:00 a.m., representing clients for Volunteer Lawyers for the Poor. She attends Mass at Bellarmine Chapel and then goes to her office in the Conaton Learning Commons where, beginning in 2010, she began serving as the University’s special council to the president and faculty-athletics representative.

GRAduATe CommenCemenT SPeAKeR Robert A. McDonald Bob McDonald is the retired chairman, president and CEO of The Procter and Gamble Co. Under his leadership from 2009-2013, P&G significantly expanded its developing market footprint, added nearly 1 billion more consumers and realized annual sales of more than $84 billion. He also led the company through significant strategic adjustments to its product portfolio, including the acquisition of Ambi-Pur, the formation of a joint venture with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries that allows the company to expand its consumer health care business, and the divestiture of its remaining food business and pharmaceutical business. P&G was twice named as the best company for leaders by Chief Executive Magazine during his tenure and named No. 1 in Hay Group’s Best Companies for Leadership Study, which analyzes more than 2,200 companies around the world. It was also recognized for its progress in diversity, environmental and social sustainability work, and its commitment to save one life every hour by 2020 by providing 2 billion liters of clean drinking water a year through its purifier of water sachets. Bob is passionate about helping others improve their lives. Born in Gary, Ind., and raised in the Chicago area, he graduated from West Point in the top two percent of his class with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army for five years, primarily in the 82nd Airborne Division where he not only completed his qualifications for Airborne, Ranger, Jungle, Arctic and Desert Warfare, Jumpmaster, Expert Infantry and Senior Parachutist, but also earned an MBA from the University of Utah. Upon leaving the military he received the Meritorious Service Medal. Bob joined Procter & Gamble in 1980, and during his career he worked and lived in the U.S., Canada, the Philippines, Japan and Belgium. In 2004, he was named vice chairman of global operations and later chief operating officer. Bob is a passionate reader and never misses his early morning workouts. He resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, with Diane, his wife of 36 years. They are the parents of two grown children.

Xavier was founded in 1831 by Bishop Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P., pioneer Catholic bishop of Ohio, as the first Catholic institution of higher learning in the Northwest Territory. Known as the Athenaeum, the college’s first building in downtown Cincinnati, was largely financed by European Catholics and particularly by Catholic citizens of Vienna. The first class numbered 60 students. From its beginning, the school was dedicated to the patronage of St. Francis Xavier. The Athenaeum attracted students from as far away as New Orleans, Mexico and Central America, and its educational quality drew many local Protestant students. At the invitation of Bishop John Purcell of Cincinnati, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) assumed control of the institution in 1840, ensuring a steady source of faculty. Under John A. Elet, S.J., the first Jesuit president, the institution was renamed St. Xavier College. Xavier offered its first evening classes in 1841 and summer courses were introduced in 1914, thus beginning a tradition of serving the unique needs and schedules of professionals and aspiring professionals in the Cincinnati community. In 1920, the college moved to its present site in Avondale, and in 1930 was renamed Xavier University, reflecting its growth and complexity. While women had been attending Xavier’s evening college since its early years, Xavier’s undergraduate “day” college became coeducational in 1969. In 1980 Xavier acquired the Edgecliff College programs and integrated them with those at Xavier, and by 1987 Edgecliff faculty, staff and students were moved onto the Xavier campus. Xavier’s growth in over a century and a half since its founding reflects its origins as a teaching institution which soundly prepares students for careers or graduate study or both. A Xavier education, particularly at the undergraduate level, is marked by the emphasis on liberal arts learning contained in Xavier’s core curriculum. Equally important in the Xavier tradition is the synthesis of human, cultural and ethical values; concern and respect for people; and an appreciation of the worth and dignity of the self and others. The College of Arts and Sciences, Xavier’s oldest college, enrolls approximately 1,734 undergraduate and 27 graduate students, and accepts the primary responsibility for the liberal arts education of all Xavier undergraduates. The Williams College of Business enrolls 1,105 undergraduates and 590 MBA students, and is dedicated to preparing business students for positions of responsibility and leadership. The College of Social Sciences, Health, and Education enrolls 1,328 undergraduate and 1,353 graduate students in specialized areas of human services. Xavier has been an innovator in graduate education, establishing, for example, the first graduate program in Montessori education in the United States. Its graduate programs in education have produced the second highest number of school administrators in the state of Ohio. Xavier’s graduate program in health services administration is a recognized innovator in the field. The Executive MBA Program, the Health Services Administration Program and the Executive Master of Human Resource Development educate upper level managers, professionals and executives while they maintain their current positions in their respective organizations. The Department of Psychology offers a master’s degree with specializations in General Experimental and Industrial/Organizational. While some of these graduates continue their education, many assume responsible positions in corporate America. The Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) Program holds the distinction of being the first doctoral program at Xavier.

The mACe

The mace symbolizes the legal and chartered authority of Xavier University. It is brought into the gathering immediately before the President. Historically, the mace was a war club. In the Middle Ages it was carried by a bodyguard to defend a person of authority. Today, its purpose is strictly ceremonial and carried by the Grand Marshal. During the ceremony the mace rests at the front of the stage in its holder. A mace is a custom-made piece of art and sometimes crafted from relics of the university. It can be decorated with gems and precious metals, sometimes in the official university colors. The Xavier University mace was designed and crafted by Bernard Schmidt, Professor Emeritus, of the department of art.
