  • The Siege of Fort Beauséjour by Chris M. Hand Notes
1 The Siege of Fort Beauséjour by Chris M. Hand Notes Early Conflict in Nova Scotia 1604-1749. By the end of the 1600’s the area was decidedly French. 1713 Treaty of Utrecht After nearly 25 years of continuous war, France ceded Acadia to Britain. French and English disagreed over what actually made up Acadia. The British claimed all of Acadia, the current province of New Brunswick and parts of the current state of Maine. The French conceded Nova Scotia proper but refused to concede what is now New Brunswick and northern Maine, as well as modern Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton. They also chose to limit British ownership along the Chignecto Isthmus and also harboured ambitions to win back the peninsula and most of the Acadian settlers who, after 1713, became subjects of the British Crown. The defacto frontier lay along the Chignecto Isthmus which separates the Bay of Fundy from the Northumberland Strait on the north. Without the Isthmus and the river system to the west, France’s greatest colony along the St. Lawrence River would be completely cut off from November to April. Chignecto was the halfway house between Quebec and Louisbourg. 1721 Paul Mascarene, British governor of Nova Scotia, suggested that a small fort could be built on the neck with a garrison of 150 men. a) one atthe ridge of land at the Acadian town of Beaubassin (now Fort Lawrence) or b) one more west on the more prominent Beauséjour ridge. This never happened because British were busy fighting Mi’kmaq who were incited and abetted by the French.

Built in Prescott during the War of 1812, Fort Wellington de- fended the vital St. Lawrence shipping route. Although Fort Wellington was never attacked, it was the staging point for a successful raid on Ogdensburg in 1813 . The fort was later abandoned . Fort Wellington was again called into service in 1837 when Upper and Lower Canada rose up in rebellion. The fort be- Photos ©Fort Wellington came the main depot for the area’s militia and in 1838, mili- tia stationed at Fort Wellington were called into battle. Expecting to be seen as liberators, American rebels landed at nearby Windmill Point but were met by 2,000 British soldiers and militia instead. In 1923, Fort Wellington became a National Historic Site and is now operated by Parks Canada. The fort consists of earthworks surrounded by a palisade. Inside, you can stroll by the officers’ quarters, discover the coponniere tunnel, explore the three-storey blockhouse, and chat with the costumed interpretive guides. Children can make their visit an adventure by becoming Parks Canada Xplorers to discover this unique fort. The site also boasts a new visitors center featuring the wreck of an 1812 -era gunboat. Daily visits are self-guided and guided tours of the fort are offered every Saturday and Sunday throughout July and August beginning at 1:30pm. During the summer months, the fort offers summer camps for children and also hosts an annual Canada Day Celebration every July 1st from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

  • Medicine Wheels
The central rock pile was 14 feet high with several cairns spanned out in different directions, aligning to various stars. Astraeoastronomers have determined that one cairn pointed to Capella, the ideal North sky marker hundreds of years ago. At least two cairns aligned with the solstice sunrise, while the others aligned with the rising points of bright stars that signaled the summer solstice 2000 years ago (Olsen, B, 2008). Astrological alignments of the five satellite cairns around the central mound of Moose Mountain Medicine Wheel from research by John A. Eddy Ph.D. National Geographic January 1977. MEDICINE WHEELS Medicine wheels are sacred sites where stones placed in a circle or set out around a central cairn. Researchers claim they are set up according to the stars and planets, clearly depicting that the Moose Mountain area has been an important spiritual location for millennia. 23 Establishing Cultural Connections to Archeological Artifacts Archeologists have found it difficult to establish links between artifacts and specific cultural groups. It is difficult to associate artifacts found in burial or ancient camp sites with distinct cultural practices because aboriginal livelihood and survival techniques were similar between cultures in similar ecosystem environments. Nevertheless, burial sites throughout Saskatchewan help tell the story of the first peoples and their cultures. Extensive studies of archeological evidence associated with burial sites have resulted in important conclusions with respect to the ethnicity of the people using the southeast Saskatchewan region over the last 1,000 years. In her Master Thesis, Sheila Dawson (1987) concluded that the bison culture frequently using this area was likely the Sioux/ Assiniboine people.
