When the Members of the Association voted to approve the Marquis Gate (now Entrada Avenue Gate) project in 2007 they were told that the unmanned new gate to and from Livingston Road would only be accessible to authorized occupants of the lots in Imperial Golf Estates Phases I through V. When the Board of Directors negotiated the settlement with Milano Recreation Association and Delasol Homeowners Association to end the law suit that ensured our use of the right of way to Livingston Road, the same condition was duplicated in the settlement. Only the Lot Owners in Imperial Golf Estates Homeowners Association were assessed for the Entrada Avenue gate system and therefore will be able to be issued or purchase bar code permits to use the Entrada Avenue gate. The IGEHOA owned and operated new back gate system is entirely separate from the manned front gate system owned and op0erated by the Greater Imperial Board that we have all been using. Therefore the new, unmanned Entrada Avenue back gate will only be accessible to the authorized occupants of the 634 lots in Imperial Golf Estates Homeowners Association Phases I through V who are issued or purchase a new Bar Code permit to be affixed to the side window of their personal vehicles or vehicles permanently parked on or within their property by the Property Manager’s Office.

"Is it not simply a device that enables the United Kingdom to avoid [1Cing highly embarrassing facts? " Certainly in the last few years the Commonwealth has been changing shape and substance so rapidly that only a very daring person would try to anticipate its future. Certainly it is not what it was seven years ago or even three years ago, and quite probably it will have a diflcrcnt appearance next year. But whatever the changing appearance and character, there is no denying that an association docs still exist, even though the legal or consti- tutional links remain exceedingly tenuous, if not non-existent. History has thrown together an association of countries in all stages of development and varying stages of self-government, with varying interests, ambitions and even loyalties, acting, if they so wish, independently of common control, but united in recognising the Queen as head, united in their use of similar institutions-parliaments, independent courts, free universities -and sharing a lillgua [ronco which permits free, frank and detailed dis- cussions in conference or around the dinner table. The sovereign independent states making up this association are today the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, India, Pakistan, Ceylon, Malaya (the first constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth) and Ghana. At the moment, two-India and Pakistan-arc republics, but Ccylon, and possibly the Union of South Africa show signs that they may adopt republican consti- tutions.

Delenda est haec Carthago: The Ostend Company As A Problem Of European Great Power Politics (1722-1727)1 Dr. Frederik Dhondt Legal History Institute, Ghent University Summary The Ostend Company (1722-1731) is a symbol of present-day Belgium’s strangling by European Great Power politics in the Ancien Régime, and more specifically of the limitations imposed on the Southern Netherlands by the Dutch Republic in 1648. The present contribution analyses the right of Emperor Charles VI to send out ships to the East Indies. Pamphlets by Abraham Westerveen and Jean Barbeyrac, argued for the exclusion of the Southern Netherlands based on the Treaty of Munster. Against this, Patrice de Neny and Jean du Mont invoked the peremptory character of the natural law-rules governing free trade. However, the Treaty of Commerce concluded between Charles VI and Philip V, King of Spain, on 1 May 1725, constituted a strong basis to refute the Dutch attacks. Yet, norm hierarchy between the balance of power inscribed in the Peace of Utrecht and secondary bilateral treaties between sovereigns dominated multilateral diplomacy after 1713 and prejudiced the “Belgian” East India trade. Vattel, Le Droit des Gens3 Concerning the OSTEND COMPANY […] DELENDA EST HAEC CARTHAGO The Importance of the Ostend-Company consider’d, 17264 In Belgian historiography, the Imperial East India Company created in Ostend (1722-1731) is often presented as an example of the sorry fate the Southern Netherlands had to suffer from the Dutch Revolt to the end of the French Revolutionary Wars5.

Origins of Political Change—The Case of Late Medieval Guild Revolts Fabian Wahl University of Hohenheim NOVEMBER!2014! Electronic copy available at: http://ssrn.com/abstract=2527798 ! EHES!Working!Paper!|!No.!69!|!November!2014! Origins of Political Change—The Case of Late Medieval Guild Revolts Fabian Wahl* University of Hohenheim Abstract This study investigates the origins of the guild revolts in late medieval central Europe. At first, using newly compiled city level data, their temporal evolution and spatial distribution is discussed. Afterwards, the paper provides a historical discussion and empirical analysis of their origins. The results show that pre-existing city-level political institutions and location in a large territorial state were important for the emergence of late medieval guild revolts. Furthermore, the agricultural productivity of the region around a city matters in a negative way confirming the role of the late medieval agricultural crisis in the outbreak of the revolts. Other important factors are a city’s urban environment and market potential, its degree of autonomy and its commercial, industrial as well as political importance. This suggests that economic change can trigger political changes. I also found evidence for the existence of spatial spillovers from the developments in neighboring cities implying that rational strategic considerations played a role in the spread of the revolts. JEL classification: N44, N94, O10, R11, H11, D72 Keywords: Late Medieval, Early-Modern Period, Political Institutions, Political Change, Guild Revolts, Cities The author is indebted to Tobias Jopp, Sibylle Lehmann-Hasemeyer, Alexander Opitz and Aderonke Osikominu as well as seminar participants in Hohenheim and Regensburg especially Jan Bauer, Benjamin Fuchs, Robert Jung and Mark Spoerer for helpful discussions and suggestions.

  • The Princes of the Mughal Empire, 1504–1719
The Princes of the Mughal Empire, 1504–1719 For roughly two hundred years, the Mughal emperors ruled supreme in northern India. How was it possible that a Muslim, ethnically Turkish, Persian-speaking dynasty established itself in the Indian subcontinent to become one of the largest and most dynamic empires on earth? In this rigorous new interpretation of the period, Munis D. Faruqui explores Mughal state formation through the pivotal role of the Mughal princes. In a challenge to previous scholarship, the book suggests that far from undermining the foundations of empire, the court intrigues and political backbiting that were features of Mughal political life – and that fre- quently resulted in rebellions and wars of succession – actually helped spread, deepen, and mobilize Mughal power through an empire-wide network of friends and allies. This engaging book, which trawls a diverse archive of European and Persian sources, takes the reader from the founding of the empire under Babur to its decline in the 1700s. When the princely institution atrophied, so too did the Mughal Empire. Munis D. Faruqui is an associate professor in the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a co-editor of two forthcoming volumes: Religious Interactions in Mughal India (forthcoming), and Expanding Frontiers in South Asian and World History: Essays in Honor of John F. Richards (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming). CIO Perspective: A Shifting World Order Part II of IV | February 2021 A SHIFTING WORLD ORDER Marwan Younes Chief Investment Officer Part II: Ultra-Capitalism at a Breaking Point Introduction: In the last installment of this series, we considered the rise of American economic hegemony from World War I through the 1950s and 60’s, ending in an endemic profit crisis in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This installment focuses on a) the new economic order that slowly emerged out of the ashes of the old in the ensuing decade, and b) almost half a century later, how that new order itself is in deep crisis. Social consciousness lags behind, but ultimately must reflect, changes in material reality. Over the past few years, culminating in the eruption of the Covid-19 pandemic, the United States has witnessed rapidly growing political and social conflict. Covid-19 has accelerated this change, which has been prepared over the past four decades by the cumulative impact of three broad, interrelated, deflationary economic processes: 1) the containment of wage increases; 2) the globalization of economic production; and 3) the financialization of the economy. The major outcome of these processes has been a massive upward transfer of wealth, leading to the present situation of extreme inequality. This basic socio-economic reality is weighing increasingly on political systems in the U.S. and a number of other countries, while undermining traditional democratic norms. In other words, the increasingly explosive political situation reflects the fact that social consciousness is catching up to objective social and economic conditions.

Dawson III The comparative experiences of the nineteenth-century British and American Army officer’s wives add a central dimension to studies of empire. Sharing their husbands’ sense of duty and mission, these women transferred, adopted, and adapted national values and customs, to fashion a new imperial sociability, influencing the course of empire by cutting across and restructuring gender, class, and racial borders. Stationed at isolated stations in British India and the American West, many officers’ wives experienced homesickness and disorientation.

  • Adopting a New Religion: the Case of Protestantism in 16Th Century Germany
Adopting a New Religion: The Case of Protestantism in 16th Century Germany Davide Cantoni∗ University of Munich August 2011 Abstract Using a rich dataset of territories and cities of the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th century, this paper investigates the determinants of adoption and diffusion of Protestantism as a state religion. A territory’s distance to Wittenberg, the city where Martin Luther taught, is a major determinant of adoption. This finding is consistent with a theory of strategic neighbourhood interactions: in an uncertain legal context, introducing the Reformation was a risky enterprise for territorial lords, and had higher prospects of success if powerful neighbouring states committed to the new faith first. The predictions of this theory are then compared to the actual patterns of expansion of Protestantism using a panel dataset featuring the dates of introduction of the Reformation. Katharina Kube provided outstanding research assistance. 1 Introduction Starting with Max Weber’s (1904/05) famous inquiry on the “Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism,” religion has widely been seen by social scientists as one of the cul- tural traits most likely to influence economic outcomes. The findings about any direct effects of Protestantism on economic growth are unclear at best (Delacroix and Nielsen, 2001; Cantoni, 2010).
