When the Members of the Association voted to approve the Marquis Gate (now Entrada Avenue Gate) project in 2007 they were told that the unmanned new gate to and from Livingston Road would only be accessible to authorized occupants of the lots in Imperial Golf Estates Phases I through V. When the Board of Directors negotiated the settlement with Milano Recreation Association and Delasol Homeowners Association to end the law suit that ensured our use of the right of way to Livingston Road, the same condition was duplicated in the settlement. Only the Lot Owners in Imperial Golf Estates Homeowners Association were assessed for the Entrada Avenue gate system and therefore will be able to be issued or purchase bar code permits to use the Entrada Avenue gate. The IGEHOA owned and operated new back gate system is entirely separate from the manned front gate system owned and op0erated by the Greater Imperial Board that we have all been using. Therefore the new, unmanned Entrada Avenue back gate will only be accessible to the authorized occupants of the 634 lots in Imperial Golf Estates Homeowners Association Phases I through V who are issued or purchase a new Bar Code permit to be affixed to the side window of their personal vehicles or vehicles permanently parked on or within their property by the Property Manager’s Office. -
What Is a Koan
WHAT IS A KOAN AND WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT? Jeff Shore Koan practice is a catalyst to awaken as Gautama Buddha did. Early Chan (Chinese Zen) encounters and statements are precursors of koans. Eventually these impromptu encounters and statements led to the practice of focusing on the koan as one’s own deepest question. The point is to directly awaken no-self, or being without self. This was done through rousing the basic religious problem known as great doubt. This doubt calls into question the very nature of one’s being, and that of all others. Over time, koan cases and commentaries developed to explore and express awakening from a dream world or nightmare of isolation and opposition. Particularly in Japan, koan curricula developed to foster awakening and to refine it in all aspects of life. Scholars have examined koan practice in light of its history, texts, social and political contexts, and sectarian conflicts. The aim here is to clarify what koans are and how they are used in authentic practice. The koan tradition arose out of encounters between teachers and disciples in Tang Dynasty (618-907) China. The koans now used in monastic training and in lay groups worldwide grew out of this tradition. Admirers tend to consider koan practice a unique and peerless spiritual treasure. Critics see koan practice as little more than a hollow shell. There are good reasons for both views. By inviting readers to directly open up to their own great doubt, this paper provides a sense of what koan practice is from the inside. -

" Certainly in the last few years the Commonwealth has been changing shape and substance so rapidly that only a very daring person would try to anticipate its future. Certainly it is not what it was seven years ago or even three years ago, and quite probably it will have a diflcrcnt appearance next year. But whatever the changing appearance and character, there is no denying that an association docs still exist, even though the legal or consti- tutional links remain exceedingly tenuous, if not non-existent. History has thrown together an association of countries in all stages of development and varying stages of self-government, with varying interests, ambitions and even loyalties, acting, if they so wish, independently of common control, but united in recognising the Queen as head, united in their use of similar institutions-parliaments, independent courts, free universities -and sharing a lillgua [ronco which permits free, frank and detailed dis- cussions in conference or around the dinner table. The sovereign independent states making up this association are today the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, India, Pakistan, Ceylon, Malaya (the first constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth) and Ghana. At the moment, two-India and Pakistan-arc republics, but Ccylon, and possibly the Union of South Africa show signs that they may adopt republican consti- tutions. -

The Pilgrimage to Awakening BY ZEN MASTER WU BONG (J ACOB PERL JDPSN) A formal dharma speech given on Buddha’s Enlightenment Day ceremonies at Providence Zen Center on December 6, 1986. Holds the ceremonial Zen stick above his head, brings the point of it down on the altar table with force. Buddha saw a star, got enlightenment. Hits the table again. Guchi’s attendant saw a finger, got great enlightenment. Hits the table a third time. Today we celebrate Buddha’s enlightenment, but we also celebrate Guchi’s attendant’s enlightenment. Which one is greater? Which one? KATZ! Today is Saturday. This is the traditional form. Everybody is familiar with it. We celebrate this experience because it’s worth celebrating. Shakyamuni Buddha - Shakyamuni means "the awakened one." That means, prior to his enlightenment experience, he was not awake; he was asleep. In the Buddhist scriptures we often read that the way we live is as if in a dream. So it is our job, according to the Buddha and the patriarchs, to awaken from this dream. That’s what happened one day to this person called Gautama Buddha. That’s also what happened to Guchi’s attendant. So we celebrate their experience, but of course, this experience is not just limited to Buddha or Guchi’s attendant. At any moment this experience can be ours. Someone asked about enlightenment and having problems in our lives. It’s hard for people to understand how someone can be practicing very hard and still have many problems. What’s the relationship? Here we are in this moment. -

Delenda est haec Carthago: The Ostend Company As A Problem Of European Great Power Politics (1722-1727)1 Dr. Frederik Dhondt Legal History Institute, Ghent University Summary The Ostend Company (1722-1731) is a symbol of present-day Belgium’s strangling by European Great Power politics in the Ancien Régime, and more specifically of the limitations imposed on the Southern Netherlands by the Dutch Republic in 1648. The present contribution analyses the right of Emperor Charles VI to send out ships to the East Indies. Pamphlets by Abraham Westerveen and Jean Barbeyrac, argued for the exclusion of the Southern Netherlands based on the Treaty of Munster. Against this, Patrice de Neny and Jean du Mont invoked the peremptory character of the natural law-rules governing free trade. However, the Treaty of Commerce concluded between Charles VI and Philip V, King of Spain, on 1 May 1725, constituted a strong basis to refute the Dutch attacks. Yet, norm hierarchy between the balance of power inscribed in the Peace of Utrecht and secondary bilateral treaties between sovereigns dominated multilateral diplomacy after 1713 and prejudiced the “Belgian” East India trade. Chan Buddhism and the Chinese Ancestors Spring Term 2014 Seminary Class Sylabus The seminary class offering for the spring 2014 term will be Chan Buddhism and the Chinese Ancestors. This ten-week class series is scheduled for Tuesday evenings from February 4th through April 15th. During this class series, we will examine the stories and traditional teachings of and about our Chinese Dharma ancestors and other significant Chan masters from the time of Bodhidharma, through the Tang and Sung Dynasties to and including Tiantong Rujing. Through these stories, we experience the particular way in which we hold the memory of our lineage tradition. We will also follow the development of Chan as it gains color and additional meaning through the authenticity and uniqueness of each generation to become an important cultural force in Chinese and other East Asian societies. The primary text for the reading assignments for each class (listed below) is Zen's Chinese Heritage: The Masters and their Teachings by Andy Ferguson either the first (2000) edition or the expanded (2011) edition. Optional, supplemental text materials will include sections from (1) The Platform Sutra: The Zen Teaching of Hui-neng by Red Pine and (2) Zen Buddhism: A History: Volume 1, India and China by Heinrich Dumoulin. Texts may be purchased; however, copies of all three texts will be placed on reserve for this class in the DRZC library. The classes will be led by Fumyo Mishaga, Genko Rainwater, and Allison Shin'ei Brown. For Seminary credit, each student will be required to complete a written assignment. Also, class attendance will be considered a very important criterion. -

Origins of Political Change—The Case of Late Medieval Guild Revolts Fabian Wahl* University of Hohenheim Abstract This study investigates the origins of the guild revolts in late medieval central Europe. At first, using newly compiled city level data, their temporal evolution and spatial distribution is discussed. Afterwards, the paper provides a historical discussion and empirical analysis of their origins. The results show that pre-existing city-level political institutions and location in a large territorial state were important for the emergence of late medieval guild revolts. Furthermore, the agricultural productivity of the region around a city matters in a negative way confirming the role of the late medieval agricultural crisis in the outbreak of the revolts. Other important factors are a city’s urban environment and market potential, its degree of autonomy and its commercial, industrial as well as political importance. This suggests that economic change can trigger political changes. I also found evidence for the existence of spatial spillovers from the developments in neighboring cities implying that rational strategic considerations played a role in the spread of the revolts.
