A man of great charm, warmth and wit, Christie, who has died of cancer aged 74, got away with a 20-year prison sentence and was eventually released after less than four years, only to find himself in prison several years later in Britain after being accused of being a member of the Angry Brigade, a group responsible for a series of explosions in London in the early 1970s. Telling his family that he was going grape-picking in France, he went first to Paris, where it turned out that the only French he knew, to the amusement of his anarchist hosts, was “Zut, alors!” There he was given explosives and furnished with instructions on how to make himself known to his contact by wearing a bandage on his hand. -

It uses these events in order to analyze the development and transformation of anarchist activism between 1967 and 1985. Focusing closely on anarchist ideas, tactics, and political projects, it explores the resurgence of anarchism as a vibrant form of leftWing activism in the late tWentieth century. Just kick it till it breaks.”—Angry Brigade, communiqué Between 1970 and 1972, the Angry Brigade used guns and bombs in a series of symbolic attacks against property. A series of communiqués accompanied the actions, explaining the choice of targets and the Angry Brigade philosophy: autonomous organization and attacks on property alongside other forms of militant working class action. Targets included the embassies of repressive regimes, police stations and army barracks, boutiques and factories, government departments and the homes of Cabinet ministers, the Attorney General and the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. THE IWW SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA BRANCH COLLECTION Papers, 1922-1981 (Predominantly 1963-1979) 3 linear feet Accession Number 1129 L.C. Number MS The papers of the IWW San Francisco Bay Area Branch were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in July of 1983 by Louis Prisco, Branch Secre- tary and opened for research in April of 1984. The IWW San Francisco Bay Area Branch was formed in the early 1960s when some members of the already-existing Oakland branch petitioned the IWW General Headquarters for a separate charter. Members engaged in a leaf- letting campaign throughout the Bay area to encourage new memberships, then moved to the university campuses in 1963 to take advantage of increasing student activism. San Francisco branch members were actively involved in the Berkeley Free Speech fight in September of 1964 and one month later organized a strike of the employees at a popular local coffee house, Cedar Alley. The strike lasted until the owner filed for bankruptcy and closed the establishment in mid-1965. Membership in the branch peaked during the time of the anti-war movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s and declined rapidly following the end of American involvement in Vietnam. In the spring of 1975, a special election was held to determine whether or not to disband the branch; the membership voted in favor of retaining their charter. The San Francisco branch re- mains active to this day, although on a much smaller scale than in the previous decades. Particular emphasis is placed on the nature and extent of the police surveillance of Burtsev and the emigre community in Europe during the period.
