  • A's News Clips, Wednesday, December 1, 2010 Power-Hungry
A’s News Clips, Wednesday, December 1, 2010 Power-hungry Oakland A's ready to wine, dine former Houston Astros slugger Lance Berkman By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune A's officials were scheduled to have dinner Tuesday night in Houston with free agent Lance Berkman, two sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to Bay Area News Group. Berkman, a switch-hitter who's slugged 327 homers over 12 seasons, is known to have been on the team's radar. Presumably, the A's view him as their designated hitter if they sign him. Berkman hit just .248 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs last season, which he began with the Houston Astros before being traded to the New York Yankees. But Berkman, who turns 35 in February, told Fox Sports last week that he's fully recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery that bothered him much of last season. He hit 25 homers as recently as 2009 for Houston. Adding power is the A's most pressing need. They would have a hole at DH if they decide not to tender a contract to Jack Cust, which is a strong possibility. The A's must decide by 9 p.m. Thursday (PT) whether to tender contracts to their 10 arbitration-eligible players, including Cust. Other logical non-tender candidates: outfielder Travis Buck, reliever Brad Ziegler and either of two third basemen -- Kevin Kouzmanoff or Edwin Encarnacion. It's believed the A's would consider signing Berkman to a one- or two-year deal, though the team doesn't comment on free- agent negotiations.

  • Taxing Blue Jays, Marlins and Other Pro Athletes Paying Tax in Multiple States Or Countries and Divvying up Income Might Sound Like a Nice Problem to Have
Robert W. Wood THE TAX LAWYER Nov. 26 2012 Taxing Blue Jays, Marlins And Other Pro Athletes Paying tax in multiple states or countries and divvying up income might sound like a nice problem to have. But sometimes being taxed more than once really smarts. In fact, some professional athletes are so worried about taxes that they decline to play in certain locations. See Like Mitt Romney, Usain Bolt Wants To Pay Only 13%. Foreign athletes must file U.S. Miami Marlins (Photo credit: miamism) income tax returns and face special withholding rules. They generally must pay U.S. income tax on their U.S.-source income. What is considered U.S.-source can be debated but includes pay for performances, endorsements, merchandise sales, and royalty or other income closely related to the event. The IRS has a special program targeting foreign athletes and entertainers. Depending on an athlete’s home country, treaty benefits may apply. Even so, disputes are common about how much income to allocate to particular countries and where endorsement earnings should be taxed. For example, South African golfer Retief Goosen twice won the U.S. Open. His success rate wasn’t quite as good in U.S. Tax Court. See Goosen v. Commissioner. His case concerned what was U.S.-source income subject to tax by the IRS. See IRS Sand Trap For Pro Golfers. Moving teams can also cause tax pain. Just consider five Miami Marlins traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, Jose Reyes, Emilio Bonafacio, and John Buck. Is this a move up in teams and cities? Sure, but taxes are another matter.

A’s News Clips, Thursday, August 11, 2011 Oakland A's reliever Craig Breslow allows grand slam in loss to Toronto Blue Jays By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune TORONTO -- A's reliever Craig Breslow did not enter an easy situation Wednesday, and his task was tougher given his recent struggles. Inheriting a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning, the lefty allowed a run-scoring single and then served up a grand slam to Toronto Blue Jays rookie Brett Lawrie, sealing the A's fate in an 8-4 loss at the Rogers Centre. As Breslow kicked himself for missing his location on a 2-0 fastball, Lawrie -- a highly touted rookie playing in his fifth major league game -- cranked his celebration into high gear. He pumped his arm going around first base. Then he slammed his helmet down and yelled wildly when he got back to his dugout, obliging the home crowd with a curtain call. The celebration went a bit far in Breslow's mind. "It was a big hit," he said. "I wouldn't have chosen to celebrate that way, but he got the best of me there." Tensions escalated in the eighth with the Blue Jays up 8-3. With a runner on first and one out, A's reliever Jordan Norberto hit Yunel Escobar with a 92 mph fastball on the first pitch of his at-bat. Escobar began walking toward the mound, and both benches cleared, though no punchers were thrown and no warnings issued by home plate umpire Dana DeMuth. Norberto, who walked Jose Bautista on four pitches after hitting Escobar, said the pitch wasn't intentional.
