Miami Marlins Reportedly Shopping Adeiny Hechavarria Author : The Miami Marlins appear to be in sales mode. As the team continues to fight to move toward relevancy in the National League East, several teams, including the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles, have inquired about acquiring shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria. Per Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, No deal is considered imminent, but that could change depending on if an agreement can be reached. Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan first reported on Thursday that Hechavarria will be traded within a few days. The Miami Herald reported the Cardinals also have interest. The move means the Marlins will move forward with JT Riddle in the lineup. Riddle was called up by the Miami Marlins twice this season to help fill in while several players have spent time on the disabled list. He is considered the team’s shortstop of the future. Marlins manager Don Mattingly didn't offer specifics on if the slick-fielding shortstop could be moved. 1 / 2 "Not a lot to say about anything like that," Manager Don Mattingly said before the Marlins faced the Cubs at Marlins Park on Thursday. "Most teams are looking at all their guys and what can you do and how you build and where you go. Any kind of rumors like that, you let it work out." Hechavarria was added to the team’s 25-man roster this past week after working on a rehab assignment, most recently in Jacksonville, the Miami Marlins Double-A affiliate. The 28-year-old signed a 4-year, $10 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2010. On November 19, 2012, Hechavarria was traded to the Miami Marlins along with Henderson Alvarez, Jeff Mathis, Yunel Escobar, Jake Marisnick, Anthony DeSclafani, and Justin Nicolino, in exchange for Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson, José Reyes, John Buck, and Emilio Bonifacio. This might not be the only move the Miami Marlins make. They could be active before the MLB trade deadline, unloading some of its core players in return for minor league prospects. The Chicago Cubs are one team that could be interesting in playing “Let’s Make A Deal” with Miami. Sources have confirmed the team has interest in outfielder Christian Yelich, who was the Miami Marlins first round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft. Frisaro reports that Hechavarria is making $4.35 million in arbitration, and he isn't eligible for free agency until after the 2018 season. Berkman, a switch-hitter who's slugged 327 homers over 12 seasons, is known to have been on the team's radar. Presumably, the A's view him as their designated hitter if they sign him. Berkman hit just .248 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs last season, which he began with the Houston Astros before being traded to the New York Yankees. But Berkman, who turns 35 in February, told Fox Sports last week that he's fully recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery that bothered him much of last season. He hit 25 homers as recently as 2009 for Houston. Adding power is the A's most pressing need. They would have a hole at DH if they decide not to tender a contract to Jack Cust, which is a strong possibility. The A's must decide by 9 p.m. Thursday (PT) whether to tender contracts to their 10 arbitration-eligible players, including Cust. Other logical non-tender candidates: outfielder Travis Buck, reliever Brad Ziegler and either of two third basemen -- Kevin Kouzmanoff or Edwin Encarnacion. It's believed the A's would consider signing Berkman to a one- or two-year deal, though the team doesn't comment on free- agent negotiations.

Parra appeared in 142 games in 2018 but started only 97 of them as a platoon outfielder, primarily in left field. He hit .284/.342/.372 in the final year of a three-year, $27.5 million contract inked prior to the 2016 season. The two-time National League Gold Glove Award winner lost playing time toward the end of the regular season when David Dahl returned from injury and Matt Holliday made his return to Colorado in August. The left-handed-hitting Parra, 31, struggled to live up to expectations in his first year with Colorado in 2016, hitting .253 with a .671 OPS, but he rebounded in '17 with career highs in average (.309) and RBIs (71). He spent the first five-plus seasons of his 10-year career with the D-backs before brief stints with Milwaukee and Baltimore prior to his arrival in Denver. Still, the Rockies will entertain the idea of agreeing to a less expensive deal with Parra, who showed value as a pinch- hitter this season by batting .393/.433/.536 with one homer, one double and two walks in 30 plate appearances. But sometimes being taxed more than once really smarts. In fact, some professional athletes are so worried about taxes that they decline to play in certain locations. See Like Mitt Romney, Usain Bolt Wants To Pay Only 13%. Foreign athletes must file U.S. Miami Marlins (Photo credit: miamism) income tax returns and face special withholding rules. They generally must pay U.S. income tax on their U.S.-source income. What is considered U.S.-source can be debated but includes pay for performances, endorsements, merchandise sales, and royalty or other income closely related to the event. The IRS has a special program targeting foreign athletes and entertainers. Depending on an athlete’s home country, treaty benefits may apply. Even so, disputes are common about how much income to allocate to particular countries and where endorsement earnings should be taxed. For example, South African golfer Retief Goosen twice won the U.S. Open. His success rate wasn’t quite as good in U.S. Tax Court. See Goosen v. Commissioner. His case concerned what was U.S.-source income subject to tax by the IRS. See IRS Sand Trap For Pro Golfers. Moving teams can also cause tax pain. One thing the Braves know is they will play the entirety of next week’s Wild Card Series in Atlanta.
