  • For Immediate Release: Capitol Theatre and Headcount Offer Scholarships for Local Teachers to Attend Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CAPITOL THEATRE AND HEADCOUNT OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS FOR LOCAL TEACHERS TO ATTEND ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM SUMMER TEACHER INSTITUTE The Capitol Theatre has set aside its very best seats for a charitable program to send area schoolteachers to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland for a week of intensive curriculum training. Concertgoers can bid on the coveted Presidential Box—four seats directly overlooking the stage—for most events at the historic Theatre, including recent performances by B.B. King, The Black Crowes, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Drive-By Truckers, Phish's Trey Anastasio, and Furthur's 9-show sold-out run kicking off this week. Proceeds from each Box auction will directly fund scholarships to the Rock Hall's Summer Teacher Institute. The scholarships are part of the "Capitol Community" program that the Theatre runs in partnership with the non-profit organization HeadCount and are open to fulltime educators at accredited learning institutions in Westchester (NY) and Fairfield (CT) counties. Winners will be awarded the full cost of tuition, and in some cases also have their travel and lodging costs covered. Additional funds from the auctions will also be directed to charities selected by artists appearing at the Cap. "Each Presidential Box auction is a chance for an individual to directly support education in the area," says HeadCount executive director Andy Bernstein. "And by bringing rock history into classrooms, we’ll be opening kids’ minds in a whole new way.” More information, including a list of current auctions and the scholarship application, can be found at http://www.thecapitoltheatre.com/capitolcommunity.

A new angle on Brooklyn retail Page.2 Williamsburg: Turning retail on its head Williamsburg, as the leading cultural hub in Brooklyn, defines the trends and sets the standard for cool, while Williamsburg as a neighborhood defies definition entirely. Such a creative and fashionable epicenter does not earn its reputation simply through the radical street art, the swanky bars and restaurants, or even the gorgeous views of the Manhattan skyline. Williamsburg has built its unique sense of character and influence on the foundation of staying true to what is unequivocally you. Valuing the sense of self over all else and celebrating the beauty of the individual is quintessential Williamsburg. A new angle on Every side is my good side Located at North 6th and Berry, 109 N 6th claims a pivotal stake in the Williamsburg retail scene. • Looking at Brooklyn's Gentrification Through Two New Films
CURBED, Looking At Brooklyn's Gentrification Through Two New Films Thursday, March 7, 2013, Welcome back to Camera Obscura, Curbed's series of photo essays by Nathan Kensinger. This week, Kensinger explores the locations of two new documentaries about development and gentrification in Brooklyn. ["Gut Renovation" and "My Brooklyn," two new documentaries that examine development and gentrification in Brooklyn, will both be in New York theaters this weekend.] "Isn't that hideous?" asks Su Friedrich, wandering through the plush lobby of the latest luxury glass tower to spring up on the Williamsburg waterfront. "I mean, what does this have to do with living in an 'edgy neighborhood'? They sold this as an 'edgy neighborhood.'" Friedrich, a filmmaker who lived in Williamsburg for 20 years before being displaced in 2009 by a tidal wave of rising rents and new condominiums, filmed her latest documentary "Gut Renovation" while the neighborhood was torn down around her. The film, which opened on Wednesday for a one week run at the Film Forum, is epic in scope, yet tells a scathing, highly personal story about "The Rape of Williamsburg," as the NY Times bluntly put it in their film review. Friedrich's documentary is centered around the block she called home, which was once populated by small industrial businesses and artist lofts, and which is now the epicenter of a new, over-branded Brooklyn experience. The Whiskey Brooklyn is at one end of her old block, by the Brooklyn Brewery and around the corner from Brooklyn Bowl. Nearby, a 50-foot-long advertisement for the HBO show "Girls" is painted onto an old warehouse across from the posh Wythe Hotel, while the newly expanded headquarters for Vice Magazine just opened up next door to Friedrich's old building.
