The 3 Inuit organisations, Sakku Investment Corporation, Qikiqtaaluk Corporation, and Makivik Corporation, are Inuit Birthright Corporations formally mandated of behalf of the Inuit of their respective regions. They are mandated to administer the financial proceeds from the land claims agreements for social, economical and employment purposes. • Transport Nanuk is the managing partner. • NEAS complies with Article 24 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. • NEAS complies with the NNI-Policy administered by the Government of Nunavut. SAKKU INVESTMENTS CORPORATION Sakku Investments Corp. (Sakku) is a for-profit organization owned by the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA). Under the Nunavut Land Claim Agreement, KIA is a designated Inuit organization with significant responsibilities for claim implementation, with Sakku serving as its ‘economic arm’ and deemed an Inuit Birthright Corporation. Since its incorporation in 1989, its mission is to build a viable and healthy economy for the Inuit of the Kivalliq region. QIKIQTAALUK CORPORATION Qikiqtaaluk Corporation, formed in 1983, is a wholly Inuit owned birthright development corporation created by the Qikiqtani Inuit Association to provide direct opportunities for Inuit in the Baffin region and outside. Balancing tradition with innovation, QC strives to improve the social and economic well- being of all people in the Baffin region by investing in or creating sound financial opportunities. MAKIVIK CORPORATION Since 1978, Makivik is the recognized Inuit Party to the JBNQ Agreement. It is a non-profit organization owned by the Inuit of Nunavik. Baffin Min. 1 delivery to Foxe Basin 2008 Kivalliq Region 11 2007 SEASON • NEAS provided more scheduled stops in more communities, more often, than ever before. • NEAS offered 10 sailings making a record 64 stops providing vital re-supply services for communities across Canada’s Eastern Arctic. • NEAS customers benefited from our newest vessel, MV AVATAQ. • NEAS’ new vessel reflects our ongoing, long-term commitment to the North. • NEAS handled over 140 000 m3 of cargo for hundreds of customers including governments, agencies, individuals, stores, businesses, mining companies... 12 Marine Operations Our Successful Inuit Training & Employment Program . Currently, we have 4 Inuit deckhands on our vessels and have 2 open positions which we will fill for 2008. In 2008, we are increasing the scope of our program to include 12 candidates for training . We started our program in 2002 with the Nautical Institute at Nova Scotia Community College in Port Hawkesbury. We will be running our program again this winter/spring and are always looking for candidates. We retain many of our Inuit graduates, season after season. One deckhand has completed his 5th season. NEAS is committed to local training and employment and much of our success is due to the strong support we have received from Kakivak, Makivik and NTI. 14 2007 NEAS HIGHLIGHT • On July 13th 2007, NEAS held the official inauguration ceremony for our newest vessel - MV AVATAQ Mr.Michael Gordon, President of NEAS and Vice President of Makivik Corp., addresses crowd at inauguration 15 WHAT MAKES NEAS DIFFERENT ? . We have offices and managers in both Iqaluit and Kuujjuaq.
