The Moral Priorities of Rap Listeners
Published: Nzinga, K.L.K., & Medin, D.L. (2018). The Moral Priorities of Rap Listeners. Journal of Cognition and Culture, 312-342. http://booKsandjournals.brillonline.com/content/journals/10.1163/15685373-12340033 The Moral Priorities of Rap Listeners Kalonji L.K. NZINGA Douglas L. MEDIN Northwestern University A Cross-cultural approach to moral psychology starts from researchers withholding judgments about universal right and wrong and instead exploring community members’ values and what they subjeCtively perCeive to be moral or immoral in their loCal Context. This study seeks to identify the moral ConCerns that are most relevant to listeners of hip- hop music. We use validated psyChologiCal surveys inCluding the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (Graham, Haidt, & Nosek 2009) to assess whiCh moral ConCerns are most central to hip-hop listeners. Results show that hip-hop listeners prioritize concerns of justiCe and authentiCity more than non-listeners and deprioritize ConCerns about respeCting authority. These results show that the ConCept of the “good person” within the hip-hop subculture is fundamentally a person that is oriented towards soCial justiCe, rebellion against the status quo, and a deep devotion to keeping it real. Results are followed by a disCussion of the role that youth subCultures have in soCializing young people to prioritize Certain virtues over others as they develop their moral identity. 1. Introduction Many AmeriCan rappers inCluding KendriCk Lamar (2010), Snoop Dogg (2015), and Busta Rhymes (2006) have delivered the following CatCh phrase in their lyriCs: “You Can take me out the hood, but you Can’t take the hood out of me.” They proClaim that there are Certain aspeCts of the “hood” lifestyle and value system that, onCe they are part of you, direCt how you perCeive the world and behave in it. -

In Focus the Making of the Visitors
People Need Love – the first ABBA song Waterloo was ABBA’s first single, right? Yes – and no. Join us as we explore the story behind People Need Love, the very first single released by the group that later reached worldwide fame under the name ABBA. Party people failure In this day and age, when pop stars with little previous stage experience achieve instant number one hits through participation in television shows such as Pop Idol and American Idol, it is sobering to be reminded how long it actually took before ABBA achieved worldwide success. Although many in the 1970s regarded the four Swedes as a ”manufactured” band, very much along the lines of the groomed, styled and choreographed overnight sensations of the early 21st Century, nothing could be further from the truth. Not only had the individual members spent a decade performing, touring and recording in earlier groups or as solo artists before they grabbed the world’s attention with ’Waterloo’ in April 1974, by that time ABBA themselves had already been making pop music together for two years – and four years had passed since they first attempted a collaboration. Confused? Read on. The early 1970s was a somewhat insecure period for Björn, Benny, Agnetha and Frida. Benny had left his previous group, The Hep Stars, and although Björn was still making records with his group, the Hootenanny Singers, he knew he couldn’t count on them for any future career advancement. Furthermore, Björn and Benny wanted to focus their attention on their partnership in songwriting and record producing, and perhaps not be performers so much anymore. -

Tapiola Sinfonietta
MAGNUS LINDBERG VIOLIN CONCERTO PEKKA KUUSISTO, VIOLIN & DIRECTOR JUBILEES SOUVENIR MAGNUS LINDBERG, CONDUCTOR TAPIOLA SINFONIETTA 1 Magnus Lindberg 2 nstrumental qualities have always inspired Magnus Lindberg (b. 1958). However abstract his musical ideas may Ibe and however tightly constructed their subsurface structures, his music is always instrumentally idiomatic and powerful. Often his ideas develop in an instrumental direction of their own accord; sometimes they emerge from the special properties of a particular instrument, fusing musical and instrumental innovation into a single creative act. This approach is of course heightened in concertos, which constitute an important genre in Lindberg’s output. He has written two concertos for piano (1990–94; 2012) and one each for cello (1997–99), clarinet (2001–02) and violin (2006), and other works with prominent solo parts. The Violin Concerto was written to a commission from the Lincoln Center in New York together with the Barbican Centre in London, the Casa de Música–Porto and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and was premiered at the Mostly Mozart festival in New York in August 2006. Although the commission was specifically aimed at the 250th anniversary celebration of Mozart’s birth, Lindberg did not write a tribute with Mozart elements in it. However, the situation of the premiere had an influence on the work in the way that Lindberg used a smaller orchestra than usual. There are two oboes, two bassoons and two horns plus strings – a standard Mozart orchestra, in fact. The very fact that the ensemble is so small prompted clearer and more translucent structures than in many of Lindberg’s other orchestral works. -
