From the Pastor:

The are meeting in Rome, participating in the Synod called by Francis to examine current challenges to the family and marriage, the vocation of the family, and the family's mission today. Speaking of families, while I was on our pilgrimage recently with a group from the parish, we celebrated Mass at the Church of Our Lady Victorious in Prague. This celebrated and beautiful Church, staffed by Carmelites (including the order to which St. Therese of Lisieux belonged), houses the statue of the Infant of Prague. It is traditionally held to be a demonstration of God’s closeness to us and his mercy as made visible in his child’s tenderness. When he visited the Church, Pope Benedict saw it as a call to prayer for children and families, especially those suffering from violence, difficulties, or broken families. My intention for the Mass we celebrated was for all the families of St. Peter Chanel, both for those struggling with difficult times and in thanksgiving for all those families who inspire others to offer compassion, mercy, care and love.

On Saturday, our parish will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with over 180 young people. Their preparation over the past two years will culminate in their being sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and strengthened in their Christian Life. Our large number of candidates requires two celebrations and the cancelation of morning Mass, as well as Confessions, on Saturday.

It is good to be home – have a great week,

All are invited! Please join in the celebration!

Knowing Our Faith

CONFIRMATION

In light of our parish celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, it might be good to review this third sacrament of the Sacraments of Initiation.

Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace: - it roots us more deeply as a child of God; - it unites us more firmly to Christ; - it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us; - it renders our bond with the Church more perfect; - it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross.

It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost and just as with , Confirmation imparts a permanent sacramental character on our souls.

Confirmation is celebrated only once and cannot be repeated. Once you are a fully initiated member of the Church you cannot be more fully initiated. Normally the is the usual minister of Confirmation, although in special cases he can delegate that responsibility to priests.

During the rite of Confirmation, the candidates are anointed with sacred chrism (oil) with the Bishop asking that they “be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit”. In the prayer that the Bishop offers over the entire group of confirmands he asks, All-powerful God, Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, By water and the Holy Spirit, You freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their Helper and Guide. St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church Page 4 October 18, 2015
