DINING Buddy’s celebrates 75 years of pizza National Detroit-Style Pizza Day set for June

Buddy’s Pizza will honor the milestone with events and spe- cials throughout 2021, including the first annual National De- troit-Style Pizza Day on June 23. Since 2011, that date has been known locally as Buddy’s Day. Gus Guerra opened Buddy’s Rendezvous in Detroit on Co- nant just north of McNichols in with his wife’s two uncles from the “old country,” and started selling pizza in 1946 using a recipe from either his Sicilian mother-in-law Crucifissa Passa- lacqua or employee Connie Piccinato (the source varies depending on who you ask).
