Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin disorder that commonly affects adults. There are a number of key differences of epidemiology, genetics, morphology, distribution, clinical course, comorbidities, symptom-burden, and response to topical and systemic treatment of AD in adults compared with children. Recent epidemiologic studies have suggested that more children with AD have persistence in adulthood than previously reported, and there is also more adult-onset/recurrence of AD. We recently found distinct phenotypes and disease triggers in those with adult-onset AD. Adult AD has less of an association with FLG null mutations and has key immunologic differences compared with childhood AD. Recognition of these differences may improve the diagnosis and management of AD in adults.

ADA RESIDENT RESEARCH AWARDEE

Namita Jain, MD, MPH Promoting Early Detection of Melanoma during the Mammography Experience

Introduction: Invasive melanoma is the seventh most common cancer in women. Routine primary care mammography screening may serve as an opportunity to promote early detection of melanoma by increasing awareness and introducing skin self-examinations (SSE).

Methods: A pilot and feasibility study was designed to promote SSE in women receiving screening mammograms at Northwestern Medicine. The study entailed development of SSE materials, delivery of the educational program, and assessment of program effectiveness.

Results: Eighty-six percent of women with scheduled mammograms participated in the study (N=560). Among participants, 68% noticed the SSE information in the changing room. Of women who noticed the information, 78% thought the information was applicable, 68% identified with at least one risk factor for melanoma, and 20% checked her skin.

Discussion: Combining skin cancer screening with breast cancer screening is a novelty. A substantial proportion of women interviewed noticed the SSE information and identified with at least one risk factor for melanoma. Incorporating an educational intervention in the setting of screening mammography is a feasible way to increase awareness in a large proportion of at-risk women.
