EFFECT OF SEEDLING EMERGENCE TIME ON THE PERFORMANCE OF MAYWEED (Anthemis cotula L.): AN ALIEN INVASIVE SPECIES IN KASHMIR HIMALAYA I. Rashid, Z. Reshi and B.A. Wafai Department of Botany, University of Kashmir, Srinagar, J&K, India [email protected] Abstract: Biological invasions, caused by non-native invasive species are a major factor contributing to ecosystem perturbations and hence are being actively pursued worldwide. Mayweed (Anthemis cotula L.), a native of southern Europe-West Siberia is an aggressive invasive species in Kashmir Himalaya, India. Among the myriad of attributes, seedling emergence time is critical to its successful colonization of habitats with varying levels of soil disturbance. Field studies revealed that the species recruits individuals over an extended period of time from September to May. This recruitment period is interspersed by harsh snowy winter (December-February) and hence the established plants of the species are constituted of pre-winter and post-winter populations, with former contributing to the fitness component of its life history and latter to the survival component. Except for number of achenes per capitulum and achene weight, all other investigated parameters such as stem height, number of primary branches per plant and number of capitula per plant were significantly higher in individuals belonging to pre-winter population in than the individuals constituting the post-winter plants. Fecundity of pre-winter individuals was further enhanced if decapitated by a specific herbivore that results in over-compensatory growth. -

Elemental composition of different parts including leaves, seeds and fruits have been determined by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). A total of 14 elements K+, Mg+2, Ca+2, Na+, Fe+2, Co+3, Mn+2, Cu+3, Cr+3, Zn+2, Ni+3, Li+1, Pb+4 and Cd+2 have been measured. Their concentrations were found to vary in different samples. Accepted 9 December, 2011 Amongst many novel interactions that alien plants forge with their new associates in the introduced range, the role of Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) mutualism and herbivory has been hitherto studied separately. Since these associations operate concurrently in nature to influence plant performance, we attempted to investigate their interactive effect on invasiveness of Mayweed Chamomile (Anthemis cotula L.), a highly invasive species in the Kashmir Himalaya, India. Survey of some field populations of A. cotula in native (European) and introduced (Kashmir Himalayan) regions revealed high incidence of phytophagous parasites on the species in native range, in contrast to almost enemy-free populations in the introduced range. However, occasional association of an aphid herbivore with some individuals of A. cotula in the introduced range was found to have positive influence on traits contributing to invasiveness of the species. We subsequently established a pot experiment in which A. cotula was grown with and without mycorrhizas and herbivores, both in isolation and combination. Results revealed that mycorrhizal inoculation and herbivory, both in isolation and in combination, influenced significantly growth and fitness, hence invasiveness, of A. cotula. -

A LIST OF THE GRASSES AND GRASSLIKE PLANTS OF THE OAK OPENINGS, LUCAS COUNTY, OHIO1 NATHAN WILLIAM EASTERLY Department of Biology, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 4-3403 ABSTRACT This report is the second of a series of articles to be prepared as a second "Flora of the Oak Openings." The study represents a comprehensive survey of members of the Cyperaceae, Gramineae, Juncaceae, Sparganiaceae, and Xyridaceae in the Oak Openings region. Of the 202 species listed in this study, 34 species reported by Moseley in 1928 were not found during the present investigation. Fifty-seven species found by the present investi- gator were not observed or reported by Moseley. Many of these species or varieties are rare and do not represent a stable part of the flora. Changes in species present or in fre- quency of occurrence of species collected by both Moseley and Easterly may be explained mainly by the alteration of habitats as the Oak Openings region becomes increasingly urbanized or suburbanized. Some species have increased in frequency on the floodplain of Swan Creek, in wet ditches and on the banks of the Norfolk and Western Railroad right-of-way, along newly constructed roadsides, or on dry sandy sites. INTRODUCTION The grass family ranks third among the large plant families of the world. The family ranks number one as far as total numbers of plants that cover fields, mead- ows, or roadsides are concerned. No other family is used as extensively to pro- vide food or shelter or to create a beautiful landscape. The sedge family does not fare as well in terms of commercial importance, but the sedges do make avail- able forage and food for wild fowl and they do contribute plant cover in wet areas where other plants would not be as well adapted. -

The Pharmaceutical and Chemical Journal, 2016, 3(2):129-135 Available online www.tpcj.org ISSN: 2349-7092 Review Article CODEN(USA): PCJHBA The Constituents and Pharmacology of Cnicus Benedictus- A Review Ali Esmail Al-Snafi Department of Pharmacology, College of Medicine, Thi qar University, Iraq Abstract The chemical constituents of Cnicus benedictus showed that it contained sesquiterpene lactone glycosides, cnicin, polyacetylen, absinthin, salonitenolide and artemisiifolin. Triterpenoids such as a-amyrenone, a-amyrin acetate, a-amyrine, and multiflorenol acetate. Lignans such as trachelogenin, nortracheloside and arctigenin. Flavonoids, including apigenin-7-O-glucoside, luteolin and astragalin. Tannins contents reached (8%). essential and volatile oils (0.3%) including n-nonane, n-undecane, n- tridecane, dodeca-l,ll-dien-3,5,7,9-tetrain (polyyne), p- cymene, fenchon, citral, cinnamaldehyde, were also isolated from the plant. It was also contained many nutritional components, minirals and trace elemints. The previous pharmacological studies showed that Cnicus benedictus possessed antimicrobial, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, enhancing digestion and increasing bile secretion. This review was designed to highlight the chemical constituents, pharmacological and toxicological effects of Cnicus benedictus. Keywords constituents, pharmacology, toxicology, Cnicus benedictus. Introduction As a result of accumulated experience from the past generations, today, all the world’s cultures have an extensive knowledge of herbal medicine. 75% of the world’s population used plants for therapy and prevention. Plants are a valuable source of a wide range of secondary metabolites, which are used as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, flavours, fragrances, colours, biopesticides and food additives [1-30].
