WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Club Chairman Vice Chairman/ Membership Marketing/Events Grounds Club Captain Duncan Finance Bruce Scott Fraser Lenore Fuller Chris de Groot Shaun Fisher Cruickshank Boyes

Your Committee has pleasure in presenting the 155th Annual Report for the year ended 31 May 2019. As always, it has been a busy year at the Club.

The Pakistan and Sri Lankan cricket teams visited South Africa during the season. Financially, inbound tours by teams other than England, Australia and India provide muted results. This has a significant impact on the overall financial performance of the Club. The Mzansi Super League provided some respite, but this has been outweighed by disappointing attendance for the domestic one-day and T20 competitions. England and Australia visit our shores at the end of this year, and we look forward to the New Year’s Test with anticipation. We are looking forward to hosting England for a Test and a One-Day International, and Australia for a T20 International.

Despite the general disappointment of the inbound cricket season, we have had a successful year in most other aspects of the Club’s finances, resulting in a profit slightly above budget. These will be detailed in the Finance Report. The Club is a major operation, with significant costs attached to not only the monthly running costs, but capital projects as well. We need to walk a fine line in endeavouring to marry the commercial aspects of the Club – particularly with our service providers – with the needs and requirements of our members, and ensuring that we remain at our heart a member’s club.

We had limited capital improvements this year, enabling us to consolidate our maintenance efforts. New lighting has been installed in the north car park, which improves security in that area. New fencing was erected at the tennis courts, and three tennis courts were resurfaced during the year. The netting for the cricket lanes in the indoor centre has also been replaced. Capital improvements will kick in again shortly, with the replacement of the A astro lights occurring in July, as well as urgent work required on the squash court front walls.

We hosted a number of events during the year, including a very successful wine festival. We also hosted a Test Match breakfast during the Pakistan Test, and are already planning a similar event for the England Test from the 3rd – 7th January 2020. In addition, we hosted the Last Man Stands cricket festival, as well as the inaugural Cape Town Premier League Cricket, and the Hockey 5’s festival. We have some major events in the next 18 months, including three hockey tournaments, one of which is the Hockey World Cup in September 2020.

We changed our security firm the last year. We are pleased with the service levels provided by SOG since they have been managing our security requirements at the Sports Centre. The other major change has been the appointment of new caterers at the Sports Centre. This has brought renewed energy to the catering function at the Sports Centre, and we are heartened by the positive feedback we have received.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 During the past year, we endured the sudden, tragic death of two of our staff members, our Membership Manager, Tracey-Lee Hugo and one of our Duty Managers, Gerard Welcomets. Tracey was the human face of the Club, and touched many members. We were inundated by messages of condolence, which we passed on to Tracey’s family, and it showed the depth to which she impacted both the members’ lives and the general Club life. Gerard was the soft-spoken, ever helpful presence, not least on Friday night’s and at Oaks meetings. We miss both Tracey and Gerard terribly, and our thoughts and prayers are with both their families during this very difficult time. Sports Clubs are under constant pressure to maintain membership numbers, and we are no exception. Our numbers are down on last year, but our membership committee is working hard on reversing this trend. As a discretionary spend, we need to try our outmost to be relevant to our members, and to provide value for membership. Your committee spends a significant portion of their time endeavouring to increase the value of your membership. To this extent, we have removed the additional gym membership charge and include the gym membership in to your general membership subscription. Members are reminded that the gym is a basic gym, with relatively limited space and limited equipment. Our sporting sections have performed admirably this year, with notable performances from the Men’s hockey 2nd team, who won their league. The Ladies tennis singles 2nd team won the Singles/Doubles League while the Men’s Vets won the Doubles League. We continue to have a number of national and provincial representatives amongst our sporting codes, and we marry this with world-class facilities across our sporting sections. The Oaks Club has been vibrant over the last year, with a broad range of speakers entertaining us on a regular basis. My thanks to Bruce Risien and the Oaks Committee for all the work they do behind the scenes to secure these speakers. Our WPCC business partners and sponsors have contributed meaningfully and willingly to the Club. We acknowledge and thank Pam Golding Properties, Growthpoint Properties and Personal Trust International. We continue to encourage our members to support the WPCC business partners and sponsors wherever possible.

We would also like to record our thanks to our Club President Dr Andrew Golding and to the Club Vice-Presidents for their ongoing support and guidance. In addition, the Club is most grateful to Club Management and to all the dedicated and hard-working staff who ensure the smooth running of the Club. Our thanks to each one of you for your contribution to the Club.

Finally, my sincere thanks to my fellow Executive Committee members, as well as all the members of the underlying committees. Shaun Fisher has settled in seamlessly as the new Chair of the Finance subcommittee and his support as Vice Chairman is very much appreciated. Scott Fraser (Marketing and Events) and Bruce Cruickshank (Membership) have overseen their portfolios with great commitment over the past year. Lenore Fuller (Grounds) oversees a significant portfolio, and she completes her 6th year in this role with her usual aplomb and energy. Chris Boyes has been an energetic and dedicated Club Captain, and we thank him for his input and insight over the past 12 months. I express my sincere thanks to the members of all the Committees for the many hours they have dedicated to the Club’s affairs during the past year.

I trust all members of the Club have enjoyed the facilities and offerings of the Club over the past year. My wish is to see more interaction with our members over the next year, be it by increased utilisation of your sporting facilities, socialising at either the Sports Centre or the Members’ Pavilion at Newlands, or participating at events organised by the Club.

DUNCAN DE GROOT CHAIRMAN

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019

FINANCE REPORT

CHAIRMAN: Shaun Fisher COMMITTEE: John Vicars

It is hard to believe that a year has passed since I took over as Vice-Chairman/ Treasurer of WPCC. It has been a substantial learning curve as the Club has a lot of moving parts which needed to be understood and how this is translated into figures. Luckily I have been able to rely on the outgoing Vice-Chairman and new Chairman, Duncan de Groot together with the Finance Manager, John Vicars.

It gives me great pleasure to submit my report, together with the Club’s annual financial statements, for the financial year ending 31 May 2019.

A review of the financial performance of the Club shows a profit of R 26,048 vs a budgeted profit of R 1,749. This is an acceptable result considering the current economic climate and is indicative of the challenges facing sports clubs throughout South Africa.

Membership income came under pressure during the year reflecting actual income of R6,073,697 vs budgeted income of R6,428,186, below expectations by R354,489 (5.52%). A review of the treasurer’s report for 2018 and 2017 also reflects a decline in membership income. This is a worrying trend which Exco and management will need to address urgently.

The Pakistan and Sri Lanka tours were disappointing from a financial point of view with less revenue than budgeted. Overall bar trading profit was under budget by R41,051.

Looking forward to the year ahead, our world class facilities will be in high demand which should generate some much needed revenue. These include the England and Australian cricket tours, over 50’s World Cup cricket and three Masters Hockey tournaments. The revenue generated from these events will be used towards the improvement and maintenance of our facilities.

We have tabled a budget for the financial year ending 31 May 2020 that shows an expected profit of R421,811. This is a fairly conservative budget considering the expected incoming tours together with the excellent hosting of the sporting events mentioned above. This is somewhat tempered by the loss of the England T20 and Australian ODI as part of the incoming tour.

Our focus will continue to be on maximizing revenue opportunities, whilst maintaining our expenditure at an acceptable level.

The major capital project of the next financial year is the replacement of the lights on the A astro with the previous lights having stood the test of time for some 15 years, a good return on our investment. This is a significant undertaking and was finalised in July 2019. Capital expenditure during the past year totalled R178,304 (2018: R804,772). Other capital improvement items included replacing the indoor centre cricket nets. We continue to relay turf strips and resurface a tennis court on an annual basis, as part of our preventative maintenance program.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Central Services is the largest cost centre within the Club. John Vicars has maintained a tight control over this cost centre during the year ended with expenditure of R13,787,435 vs budgeted expenditure of R14,058,000, under budget by R270,565 (1,92%). This is an excellent achievement considering the tough economic environment the Club operates within.

Staff salaries form the largest component of this cost centre and this has been tightly controlled with an inflationary increase from 2018. The retention and upliftment of our staff is an important aspect of the Club. We continue to review the benefits offered to our staff which includes a provident fund and life insurance cover.

One of the objectives of the finance committee is to manage the risk profile of the Club. It is apparent that the Club is facing a number of challenges not least being the decline in membership and the resultant pressure on operating income together with ageing facilities which require ongoing maintenance, while at the same time looking to improve our facilities so that they remain the Club of choice in the Western Cape. Exco are aware of these challenges and we look forward to the continued support of our members in overcoming these challenges. The Club continues to be unencumbered.

I would like to extend my thanks to John Vicars and his finance team, who continue to play an integral role in the financial management of the Club.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Independent Auditor’s Report To the members of Western Province Cricket Club Opinion We have audited the financial statements of Western Province Cricket Club set out on pages 4 to 14, which comprise the statement of financial position as at 31 May 2019, and the statement of comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity and statement of cash flows for the year then ended, and notes to the financial statements, including a summary of significant accounting policies. In our opinion, the financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Western Province Cricket Club as at 31 May 2019, and its financial performance and cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with basis of accounting as set out in Note 1 of the financial statements and are based upon appropriate accounting policies consistently applied and supported by reasonable and prudent judgements and estimates. Basis for opinion We conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Statements section of our report. We are independent of the club in accordance with the sections 290 and 291 of the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors’ Code of Professional Conduct for Registered Auditors (Revised January 2018), parts 1 and 3 of the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors’ Code of Professional Conduct for Registered Auditors (Revised November 2018) (together the IRBA Codes) and other independence requirements applicable to performing audits of financial statements in South Africa. We have fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities, as applicable, in accordance with the IRBA Codes and in accordance with other ethical requirements applicable to performing audits in South Africa. The IRBA Codes are consistent with the corresponding sections of the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants’ Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants and the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants’ International Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (including International Independence Standards) respectively. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. Other information The executive committee is responsible for the other information. The other information does not include the financial statements and our auditors’ report thereon, and it is presented as additional information. Our opinion on the financial statements does not cover the other information and we do not express an audit opinion or any form of assurance conclusion thereon. In connection with our audit of the financial statements, our responsibility is to read the other information and, in doing so, consider whether the other information is materially inconsistent with the financial statements or our knowledge obtained in the audit, or otherwise appears to be materially misstated. If, based on the work we have performed, we conclude that there is a material misstatement of this other information, we are required to report that fact. We have nothing to report in this regard. Responsibilities of the executive committee for the Financial Statements The executive committee is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in accordance with basis of accounting as set out in Note 1 of the financial statements and for such internal control as the executive committee determine is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. In preparing the financial statements, the executive committee is responsible for assessing the Club’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the executive committee either intend to liquidate the Club or to cease operations, or have no realistic alternative but to do so. Auditor’s responsibilities for the audit of the Financial Statements. Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements as a whole are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with International Standards on Auditing will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of these financial statements. As part of an audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing, we exercise professional judgement and maintain professional skepticism throughout the audit. We also: • Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control. • Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the club’s internal control. • Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related disclosures made by the executive committee. • Conclude on the appropriateness of the executive committee use of the going concern basis of accounting and based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the Club’s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor’s report to the related disclosures in the financial statements or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our auditor’s report. However, future events or conditions may cause the Club to cease to continue as a going concern. • Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial statements, including the disclosures, and whether the financial statements represent the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation. We communicate with the executive committee regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 CLUB CAPTAIN REPORT

It is with great pleasure that I present my report as Club Captain for the year ended 31 May 2019.

I am always filled with pride at how impressed and blown away visitors are when they visit the Club for the first time. They often cannot stop talking about the fantastic setting and world class facilities that we as members have. The Club is not in this position by luck, but by the hard work that has been put in by past committees. The Club cannot afford to fall behind in maintaining and upgrading the existing facilities, and that responsibility rests with the current Exco. To this end we will have the new hockey lights installed on the A Astro by the end of July and will soon be able to host grand challenge and provincial hockey matches at night. The deionizer for the borehole water has been installed which will make us more self-sufficient to a possible drought, the new security company has settled in after some resistance from members to change, and the new caterers have so far been a real bonus to the Club. The only outstanding item is to become more self-sufficient to the electricity supply, which we are working on, but once again it boils down to finances and priorities.

It has been a quiet year on the hosting of outside events which is sorely needed to generate income for the Club and help keep the increase in subscriptions low. The international visiting sides from Sri Lanka and Pakistan did not help the situation as they are at best break-even tours from a club perspective. This however all changes in the new financial year with tours from England and Australia which are both very lucrative. We will also be hosting the Grand Masters Hockey in October, the Last Man Stands in December, the Barmy Army/Gulliver’s Tours in January and lastly the over 45 Hockey World Cup in September.

It has been noticeable over the last year or so, a slow and in some cases a more rapid deterioration of sporting facilities at a number of opposition clubs that we compete against. This is in part due to the municipalities not contributing what they used to, and also to the clubs losing members. As one of the last private multi-disciplined sports clubs we do not have the luxury of municipal subsidies and thus have to generate income elsewhere. While we are happy for various service providers like caterers and coaches to run their businesses from the Club, we are now charging them more realistic rentals for the use of the Club facilities. These service providers need to understand that the Club is there for the members use first and foremost and that we as WPCC are also running a business. In these tough economic times the Committee has to be cognitive of how the members are struggling financially and that the subs are not increased by too much.

Another very successful Annual Sports Awards function for 2018 took place in November at the Bowls Club House which is proving a great venue. For a second year in a row the Ladies made a clean sweep of the awards with the Ladies Hockey section performing particularly well. My congratulations to the winners in each category.

Sportsperson of the Year: Alex Fuller Administrator of the Year: Carol Nash Team of the Year: 1st Ladies hockey team Club Captain’s Award: Andi Bernstein Young Achiever of the Year: Kayla de Waal

Moving on to the sports sections. The Bowls committee is continually busy and innovative. Being a year round sport there is always

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 activity at the Bowls club house, be it during the week or over weekends. From internal to local sponsored tournaments, to lunches or fundraisers the bowls section really gets their members involved and I would just like to thank them for all the effort that they put in. The list of player achievements are far too many to mention and can be viewed in the section report.

The Cricket Section had a far better season than the previous one as the drought had finally broken and all fixtures could be completed. We were most fortunate as the Wally Wilson Oval did not take as much strain as other clubs fields thanks mainly to our grounds staff. Our teams generally ended in the top half of the leagues, but we have unfortunately lost some of our better players over the last few seasons. This is being addressed by advertising for a Club coach. The new committee will be looking at those that have applied, and then announce the coach before the season gets under way.

The Hockey Section is a massive contributor to the Club both on and off the field and with 17 teams entered in the various leagues, the Club is always buzzing when they play home matches. Congratulations must go to Tarryn Glasby, Rhett Halkett and Ryan Crowe who represented South Africa in outdoor hockey. WPCC also had four players in various age groups that represented South Africa. Both the ladies and men’s 1st sides, although not winning, performed incredibly well at the prestigious River Club tournament in Durban coming second and third respectively.

The 2018 Landmarks Half-Marathon, with over 2000 runners, and the Medical 10 were once again superbly organised by Dion Smith and his committee. The running sections Thursday night time trials are also proving very popular and it is wonderful to see so many runners in local races participating in the Club colours.

The WPCC Squash Section for the first time in many years did not win either the men’s or the ladies 1st leagues, but the section is in a healthy state with many new league playing members joining and a number of juniors winning individual tournaments during the year. We still have 18 league sides which affords all aspirant league players an opportunity to play league.

I would like to welcome Nelene Gold as the new Chairperson of the Tennis Section. Having taken over from Bridget Visee, she has large shoes to fill, but she seems to be taking it in her stride with the improved aesthetics of the tennis club house already taking shape.

I would like to thank Bridget Visee for all the time and effort she has put into running the Tennis Section over many years and she will be taking a well deserved rest from serving on the committee.

The ever popular Oaks Club under the guidance of Bruce Risien has grown the membership substantially with the diverse and prominent sports people that have given talks in the Bowls club house in the past year.

It is the duty of Executive Committee to make sure that the Club facilities are maintained and upgraded, and it is management’s responsibility to oversee the implementation thereof. To this end I would like to thank Bradley Seconds and the grounds staff for this challenging task. Lastly, I would like to thank the dedicated committee members who all offer their services on a voluntary basis for the time and effort that they put in to ensure that members have exceptional facilities and most important, that they use and enjoy the Club.

CHRIS BOYES CLUB CAPTAIN

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 MEMBERSHIP REPORT

CHAIRMAN: Bruce Cruickshank COMMITTEE: Tanja Hazel, Sandy Wehrli, Graham Cann, Les Apollis

When I was a child I was told by my elders that the older you get the faster the years rush by and of course then I told them that they were talking nonsense. How right they were and here I am presenting my third report to the members of this great Club and entering my fourth year in office. It seems only the other day that I took over as chairman of Membership. The past year was a good one for the membership committee apart from one catastrophic event which shook the Club’s world. Late in January we were advised of the totally unexpected passing of Tracey-Lee Hugo. Tracey was for almost a decade the “face of the Club” to all members who would often be found sitting in her office discussing just about anything and everything. When I joined the membership committee and later took over the chairmanship of that committee, I spent a great deal of time with her and was able to draw on her extensive knowledge of the Club, its membership and constitution to address the various issues raised by members. One of the remarkable things about Tracey was that however stressed or unhappy she was you rarely saw her without a great big smile. Tracey is sorely missed by all of us. Our condolences to Candice and the rest of her family. Sporting Clubs throughout South Africa and in fact around the world are under pressure to retain members let alone increase numbers. In my presentation to the Executive Committee before the start of this financial year I predicted that we would show a 5% decrease in numbers this year before recovering to the 2018 levels in the 2020 financial year. This has proved to be the case with our membership figures, as can be found elsewhere in the Club report and I am optimistic that we will achieve the figures projected for the new financial year. The Club has much to offer and thanks to a proactive Executive Committee the facilities and offering to members continues to improve. The Sports facilities are still the best in the country and this can be seen by the increasing number of members joining the various sections. Most of our teams are leaders in the leagues in which they play. Going into the 2019/20 cricket season members have some exciting games to look forward to which can be viewed from our top class Members Pavilion. One of the challenges facing the membership committee is the use of our facilities by non-members. I urge all of you to please encourage friends and associates to do the right thing and join the Club if they are going to continue using our facilities. We will be doing a number of membership drives going forward. We note with sadness the passing of a number of members during the year and appreciate their contribution to the Club. After an exhaustive screening process we appointed Tanja Hazell to the position of Membership Secretary and what an inspired choice that was. Tanja has fitted in really well and I personally look forward to working with her for quite some time. Please feel free to pop in and visit her if you haven’t already done so. In closing I would like to thank my committee members, Graeme Cann, Les Apollis and Sandy Wehrli for their support. Megan Dobson and Nelene Gold have stepped down from the committee and I would like to thank them for the huge contribution they have made over the years. BRUCE CRUICKSHANK MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 MARKETING REPORT

True colours are always shown during the tough times and we have really pulled together to navigate our special Club through.

Sports clubs around the world are experiencing a decline in members and the same can be said here in South Africa but #MyWPCC is holding its own. We have a community that looks after each other and really stands up to tackle any political and economic situations.

Our facilities at #MyWPCC are world renown and we endeavour to constantly upgrade them for your benefit from the small things like new cocktail tables in the bar to the upgrade of the hockey astro lights, new caterers and security.

We are proud to listen, provide and serve you!

Our Social media has steadily grown to over 1500 followers online who post, tag, check-in, comment, share and simply acknowledge with the iconic thumbs up. Thanks you Megan Dobson who regularly uploads the content.

The newsletters have remained a constant form of communication but it’s our website’s evolution and introduction of Digiwedge which allows our members to buy/load credit on to their membership cards resulting in seamless payments. It’s an alternative from cash and card payment options.

Let us jump right in and reflect on the many highlights and events that have taken place at our beautiful Club…

The traditional Friday afternoon ‘Happy Hour’ at the Club has again seen many a smile and happy members winding down from the week in the hope of winning the attendance draw.

Wine Tastings too are always a treat for members to interact with the respective Western Cape wine farms.

The big success from this year was the introduction of the Wine Festival in February which provided a superb afternoon which was well supported by not only our members but by the neighbouring wine farms and other suppliers. We are already planning for next year perhaps with the addition of a Gin & Beer Festival too.

Another popular event was the reinstated Newlands New Year’s Test breakfast. We were entertained with probing conversations between Dave Rundle, Trevor Quirk and Robin Jackman ahead of the start of the first day’s play.

A fun sporting event that has been added to the calendar is the Annual Hockey 5’s tournament, which is an enjoyable weekend for the whole family.

The new cricket competition, Cape Premier League (CPL) T20, brought in some revenue and WPCC received airtime on Supersport highlighting our venue and facilities.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 #MyWPCC has often been the chosen venue for many National and International sporting code tournaments including Cricket, Tennis, Bowls, Squash and the Masters Hockey World Cup having been awarded to Cape Town. We again are proud to be associated and recognised!

A very well spoken, Scarra Ntubeni was our guest speaker at the Annual Sports Awards held in our Bowls Clubhouse. Congratulations to our nominees and winners for their Awards!

The Landmarks Half Marathon is our annual event that is popular on everyone’s calendar and continues to bring joy to the #mywpcc community. A huge thank you to our respective members who are involved with and sit on these committees and motivate #mywpcc as a preferred venue for such sporting occasions.

Over the last 3 years The Oaks meetings have become regular occasions with such great guest speakers such as Sherylle Calder, Mickey Arthur, Toks van der Linde and many others providing superb entertainment.

We can all agree that the new caterers and restaurant ‘The Club’ are providing us with superb meals and friendly efficient service.

We want to thank you, our members, for your continued support, feedback and interaction year in and year out.

We encourage you to share your memories and experiences with your friends on our social media platforms. As always, to keep current, please keep us updated with your details if they have changed and e-mail them to the Club offices. We hope that you have enjoyed this last year with us and we look forward to more exciting years together at #mywpcc.

CHAIRLADY: Lenore Fuller GROUNDS STAFF: Errol Swanson, Eddie Jacobs, Charles Ngwenyama

It is time, once again, to reflect on what was done to maintain our beautiful facility. No big ticket projects were carried out this financial year which allowed us an opportunity to consolidate our maintenance efforts and to improve security on the campus.

At the recommendation of our new security company additional lighting was installed in the north car park. The increased security surveillance has resulted in the Club being able to monitor and control vagrants. In the past we have experienced theft of the metal domes on the garden lights around the campus. Where possible the domes have been restored and secured with antitheft screws.

To enhance security at the tennis club a new fence was erected on the south west side. The Eugenia hedge has since been removed there and an improved grassed area is being created with a new rhus hedge along the fence to act as the wind break. The artificial surface from hockey was placed on the previously grassed area in front of the clubhouse as the grass could not be maintained as a result of the restrictions placed on the use of council water and irrigation. The tennis section has enhanced the area with tables and pot plants. Courts 5 to 7 were resurfaced and cleaned in this financial year.

Much of our maintenance contractor, Servest’s time is spent on preparing both the bowling greens and the cricket pitches. It has been recognised that annual spring treatments on the bowling greens and scarifying of the cricket fields is essential for the long term benefit of the playing surfaces. It is our intention to replace a strip on the Wally Wilson field annually on a rotational basis. This, however, was not done this year as a result of cricket matches being played until the end of April. A strip will be replaced at the end of the 2019/2020 season.

The indoor cricket nets did however benefit from new netting between the lanes. These have been appreciated by the cricketers and coaches. Maintenance of the lights in the indoor centre is an ongoing matter.

Much effort was spent this year on fire and safety compliance requirements at the Newlands Clubhouse. The Club is now in line with regulations and specifications.

Time and effort was spent researching the best fit for replacing the floodlights on the A hockey astro turf as the current lights do not comply with FIH requirements with lux output. New lights have been ordered and can be installed on the existing poles. These will be done in July 2019 and will then enable us to host premier league and first class matches under lights. The lights should also contribute to our ongoing effort of conserving the resources.

Monthly checks on our water and electricity usage are carried out in order to conserve resources. It is intended to investigate methods to further save electricity as this is a big cost to the Club.

Investigations will also be conducted this year on the best fit for repairing our front squash court walls

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 that are showing signs of paint failure. The issue of damp on our floors is also currently receiving attention. We are committed to ensuring that our facility remains the premier facility in the Western Cape.

Our philosophy of preventative maintenance continues to drive our decisions and to this end we annually contract a tree specialist to prune the trees, we service the boreholes in time for spring and maintain the heat pump for our geyser in the clubhouse.

We bade farewell to a few people involved with grounds and maintenance this year. Our consultant Mark Rist, the Servest manager Etienne Daniels and to Charles Ngwenyama, a member of the maintenance team. Our thanks go to all of them as well as Errol, Eddie, Mogamet and the Servest staff on site, for continuing to keep this large ship afloat. This is a mammoth task and your efforts are hugely appreciated.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 BOWLS REPORT

CHAIRMAN: Mark Gibbs COMMITTEE: Vice-Chairman (Men), Guy McGlew, Vice-Chairman (Ladies) Carol Nash, Honorary Secretary Alan Phillips, Honorary Treasurer – Russell Phillips, Club Administrator – Gavin Redfern CO OPTED MEMBERS: Butch Aldum, Audrey Marais and Peter Pullen

The year past has been a positive one, with it being my first as chair within the section. One of the early goals was to ensure that a strategy was in place and that we had key focus areas, namely, formation of a business league and membership, having clear responsibilities for committee and sub-committee members, to improve communication and improve performance of various teams. The above are all steps to ensure we can run more professionally and businesslike.

A great addition to the section was undoubtabley, the return of Neil Burkett in December 2018. With this, he brought a wealth of experience, after spending 10 years in Sydney as a professional and coach of this great game. The committee had offered the role of Club professional to him in August, but he has asked for time to “settle in” at the Club. Neil has accepted the role as Club professional and will act in this capacity for 4-5 months in the year. His role will include playing for the Club, coaching and developing the men’s and ladies 1st team squads & the development squads, assisting the head coach and coaches with coaching clinics, assisting/ advising selection. He will assist in attracting new members as well as various aspects of bowls coaching and development including team dynamics, establishing a winning culture, team work, tactics, skills development and talent identification. We are truly lucky to have him on our greens.

Communication has been a big part of the year’s success, with the inclusion of a yearly calendar which is updated regularly, the establishment of a website, regular “update” emails sent to members, Whats App communication by Alan Phillips, notice board updates and the monthly Keep It Rolling insert.

We cannot deny that our strength is indeed our members, and with that in mind, I would like to note how members have demonstrated this. The team of Butch, Audrey and helpers in the kitchen who look after the well-attended monthly lunches. Danie, Patrick and Peter for looking after our greens in conjunction with the Servest staff. Members this year have assisted with club house and greens, and we thank Mario, Clyde and Trevor Clarke for the fantastic new rink markers around the greens. Alan Phillps who works tirelessly on fundraising for the section on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and we can’t forget those hot chips! The section have a number of members who have assisted in various ways throughout the season, for which we are grateful and look forward to working with you all again in the various roles, be it volunteering, duty officers, assistance with tabs in and those who are always willing to umpire and mark. Your assistance is much appreciated by the section.

The section had an improved performance on the greens generally with most of our teams, with our 1st Ladies Team promoted. A number of players have represented WP Bowls, namely Peter and Colleen Bryant, Kevin Nash, Lynda Nurrish and Audrey Marais. The season past saw us play pre-season friendlies against Constantia, Mowbray and Helderberg. Our selection committees worked well, with both ladies and men having their own selection committees. The section were proud to send a side to the 2019 BSA Nationals. The section gained a number of new members, with local club players

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 joining and a few with a pedigree, namely Anneke Snyman, a Protea Bowler. We welcome them all to the section.

The year has seen a number of tournaments hosted at the Club, this due to the fabulous state of the greens. The premier competition on the bowls calendar is surely the Personal Trust Classic. Entries are often closed in the early weeks of opening, which is testament to the calibre of play. Organising team, led by Kevin and Carol Nash have this year put on another flawless event for all participants. The Rooiberg 4’s, a must for the bowls community to enter is always well attended and festive at the bar. The Winter Midweek, run by Peter Pullen along with the 2-4-2 Pairs, which next year celebrates 30 years in existence. The 2-4-2 is currently exploring the option of a morning competition.

A tournament highlight for the year was certainly being the headquarters for the Ladies Inter-District Open B Nationals and Finals. The event was a feather in the Club’s cap and could not be done without the leadership of Guy McGlew and his committee who work tirelessly over the 6 days. The input that Jenny Phillips had for the tournament was invaluable and assisted in ensuring that we hosted a successful and enjoyable tournament for all competitors.

The Club have submitted a bid to be headquarters and hosting club for the BSA Men’s Nationals in May 2020 and All Cape in April 2020.

Sadly, the bowls section lost two massive figures in the past year. Danie Loubser, a great bowler, a gentleman and a loyal and passionate supporter of our Club that he loved dearly. A legend of the game in every respect and a great inspiration to many bowlers.

Hank Williams was a valued member and Committee member who worked very hard for the Club as treasurer. He is specifically remembered for his contribution to the success of the 2017 World Blind Bowls tournament.

We have a very good working relationship with the Main Club Executive. The contribution that the bowls club has made over the last few years has been well received, with significant bar profits generated by our hosting of events such as BSA inter-districts, World Blind Bowls and All Cape tournaments over the years. The envisaged business league had to be postponed, but Jenny Phillips is heading up a sub-committee to have a business league conducted later in 2019. Thank you to our Christmas party team – Audrey, Butch, Sandy, Jenny Daly, Jenny Phillips, Colleen, Graham Todd. Di, Carol and Trevor Clarke ably led by Audrey.

In closing, I would like thank the selection committees, green keeping team and my committee members who put in many hours at the Club, bearing in mind many are working folk who put this time in ‘after hours’. Thanks to Gavin Redfern for his very good work as our club administrator, the ladies in the kitchen and the bar team. A special thank you to all our sponsors- especially Personal Trust and Rooiberg for their continued support, which is sincerely appreciated.

A reminder, one of our key Club values is respect. Respect in the way we interact with our fellow members, opponents, the selectors and committee members both on and off the greens.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 CRICKET REPORT

CHAIRMAN: Trevor Pape COMMITTEE: Ale Bonora, Andre Ross, Kyle Schreuder, Derek Mitchell Mohammed Buffkins

The drought broke over the winter of 2018 and meant that the 2018/2019 cricket season could be successfully completed, after the disappointment of the curtailed 2017/2018 season. Having said that, several fields at certain premier league clubs took strain as the summer wore on. The WPCC fields however stayed in good condition, particularly the pristine Wally Wilson Oval. The ground staff and management are to be complemented in this regard.

The big change in format this season was the dropping of the 2 day game to a 1 day 50 over competition for the 1st and 2nd sides, with games played both home and away. The T20 competition was retained in this regard. The 3rd team continued to play 50 over cricket whilst the 4th team played in the 3A league, split into 2 groups with the top 2 of each group then playing semi finals and a final.

The 2018/2019 season was overall a decent season for the Club with some very good as well as some disappointing performances.

The first team have lost a few quality players over the past few seasons and this has given rise to a young side with a few experienced players, led admirably in his first season as captain by Kyle Schreuder. The young players have stepped up massively with Ryan Klein and Gavin Kaplan performing very well and picking up the Club awards between themselves for best all rounder/bowler and best batsman/ fielder respectively. Gavin ended up 4th on the overall Premier League standings. The team finished in a respectable 6th position this season in the league. From the experience gained over this last season it will be hoped that the 1st side can improve on their performances in the coming season.

The 2nd team were a surprise package this season and after the start of losing the first 3 games they performed superbly and eventually finished 3rd in the league. The 2nd team deservedly received the award for team of the year. It was great to see the players stepping up and buying into the Club culture. Rasheed Lewis, our Head Coach, led from the front by topping the batting averages for the season for the 2nds.

The 3rd team had a tough season. However, they showed fight and tried their best throughout the year and some of the players put in some really good performances, most notably Alan Goliath’s 120 in 44 balls versus Helderberg CC. That display gave Alan the Oaks Award for Outstanding Performance in Reserve A or below. Going forward there is a big challenge to sustain and improve the 3rd side into the season ahead.

The 4th team, aka The 3A’s, had a very good season as they often have done in the recent past. They finished the season in 2nd position after losing in the final against Durbanville CC.

The Friendly ‘W’s’ had a season without Neil Watson taking to the field for the first time!! As always Neil was not far away, and tirelessly organised the Friendlies matches for the team. The captaincy was shared in the season by Curtis Fourie and Shane Eglinton, with Curtis ending up as the Friendlies player of the season.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Thus to recap: Premier League: 1st team 6th out of 12 Reserve A League: 2nd team 3rd out of 12 Reserve C: 3rd Team 7th out of 8 Division 3A: 4th team 2nd out of 32 Friendlies XI: 1st OR last out of 22….for the love of the game

An interesting edition to the season’s programme was the inaugural Cape Premier League T20 tournament in April 2019. A number of games were hosted on The Wally Wilson Oval. Kyle captained the Dromedaris Dragons (with Rasheed Lewis as assistant coach), while Ryan and Gavin played for the Hoeri Kwaggo Bulls and Altantic Pirates, respectively. It would seem this tournament is here to stay in the season’s calendar.

A special mention on Rasheed Lewis, this his last season in charge as Head Coach of WPCC cricket. I would like to thank Rasheed for his efforts/advice in steering the coaching ship (senior and junior) over these last 3 years, whilst I have been chairman. Also in particular in this last season in steadying and leading the 2nd side on the field. On behalf of the cricket section and the greater Club I wish Rasheed well in his future ventures on and off the field.

Thanks to Auric Auto for their sponsorship support once again and we hope to continue that relationship in the coming seasons.

I would like to thank both the junior and senior committee for all the effort they have put in throughout this last year. Again I make special mention of Ale Bonora who as Vice Chairman has given inciteful comment and input on all things pertaining to the running of the section. I also would like to thank Andre Ross who has dutifully served on the committee for the last 7 years as Treasurer.

Lastly, I wish Neil Watson who is taking over from me as Chairman of cricket, all the best for the upcoming season particularly with the appointment of a new head coach and the challenges and potential opportunities that will come with that appointment. As you know I will always be there to support you and the teams.

It has been a privilege to serve the section and the Club as a whole these last 3 years.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 HOCKEY REPORT

CHAIRMAN: Mark Bryant VICE-CHAIRMAN: Kevin Lacey COMMITTEE: Brigitte Jenkinson (Ladies Club Captain), James MacDonald (Men’s Club Captain), Tomas Van Gysen (Umpires), Di MacDonald (Grounds)

For 2018 we welcomed Devin to the role of Men’s 1st team coach who managed to do very well in the Men’s GC league, finishing 2nd amongst some stiff competition. Congratulations also to our Men’s 2nd team who managed to finish off a fantastic season winning GR league.

In our Ladies sides there were few changes with regards to coaches which showed in the results. Congratulations again to both Andi and Jon for winning their respective GC and GR leagues.

The loss of several players at the end of the 2018 season, especially in the Men’s 1st team, meant that the 2019 season was likely to be more challenging. However plans were put in place to ensure that we continued to perform well and we hope to attract more juniors to the Club.

For the 2018 season we had 6 ladies, 7 men’s and 4 master’s sides and this was carried through to the 2019 season. Early trials, and constant communication between coaches has meant that team and player rotation has worked well. We continue to improve thereon to ensure opportunity is provided where appropriate.

Both our Men’s and Ladies’ 1st teams were fortunate enough to once again attend the Belgotex Sport Elite Club Challenge Tournament hosted by Riverside Sports in Durban. Both sides did well, representing the Club admirably and were unlucky not to win. The Men finished third and Ladies finished second.

We are fortunate to be one of the founding elite Clubs and look forward to yet another fantastic tournament in 2019, along with the implementation of a southern qualifier being at hosted at WPCC in early 2020.

The following were selected to represent SA in their age groups. Girls SA U18 & U18 5’s – Kayla de Waal SA U17A – Liza Steyn

Boys SA U18A – Idress Abdullah SA U17 – Luke D’Aguiar

Tarryn Glasby, Rhett Halkett and Ryan Crowe (all outdoor) all made the national sides respectively.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Congratulations to the WPCC representatives in the WP Ladies and Men’s sides for this year’s Inter Provincial Tournaments: WP Ladies: Gretchin Davids, Kelsey Bailey, Sasha Sivertsen, Taryn Glasby WP Pens Ladies: Britany Gouws, Megan Clarke WP Men’s: Callum Buchanan, Rhett Halkett WP Pens: Cameron Ryan, Dave Agar, Nathan Loff WP U21 Ladies: Sasha Sivertsen WP U21 Mens: Nathan Loff

Further congratulations to Tomas van Gysen and Shaun Henshilwood for their participation in the WP U18 IPT as umpires. Tomas umpiring the 3rd vs 4th game and Shaun making the final – a fantastic achievement for both.

We are fortunate enough to yet again retain a dedicated and talented group of coaches this year and the committee would like to thank them all for their commitment and hard work so far. It is thanks to you guys that the teams run successfully every weekend.

The past financial year has seen the Hockey Section once again do relatively well and further reduce the budget deficit. There is always pressure on finances with some advertisers not renewing their contracts and the sections continued drive for new advertisers. The support of the Hockey Section from all our current sponsors is greatly appreciated.

We look forward to several fantastic upcoming tournaments to be hosted at the Sports Centre, namely the Cape Town International Schools Hockey Festival in July, Grand Masters IPT in Oct, Masters IPT in May 2020 and the SA Masters Tournament in September 2020.

The support of the Club by the players after practices and matches is great and continues to grow.

I would like to thank all those involved who assisted in making the 2018 Awards Dinner yet another great success.

Finally, to my Committee, many thanks again for your hard work, support and all your efforts behind the scenes.

Without you and the members of all the various sections giving of their time, this event would not be possible. We had over 2000 entries in the Landmarks Half Marathon and an increased field in the 6km Fun Run. This due no doubt to the efforts of Woolworths and the Sports Science Institute that saw a very successful field of young athletes in the schools challenge. SQUASH REPORT

CHAIRMAN: Paul Atkinson COMMITTEE: Catharina Stone, Kim Commins, Penny Usher, Taryn Azevedo Deon Hugo, Jeremy Chetwin

On behalf of the WPCC Squash Section, I have pleasure in submitting the Chairman’s Report for the 2018 / 2019 Annual report.

The 2018 season focused on ensuring that the squash section continued to build on a tough 2017 season whilst at the same time welcoming a record number of new league playing members to the Club. In total we entered 18 sides and had a similar success rate as the previous season with the vast majority of our teams entered across Men’s, Ladies and Masters ending in the top half of the log. We did not win either men’s or ladies 1st league for the first time in a number of years but we did have 3 sides in men’s 1st league and 2 sides in ladies’ 1st league respectively. Our junior section is also in a very healthy state with WPCC juniors taking part and winning many individual tournaments throughout the year.

INTERNATIONAL HONOURS A special mention must be made of Alex Fuller for winning her 8th professional title and improving her world ranking from 62 at the start of the year to a current ranking of 40. Alex is now based in Ireland and flying the SA and WPCC flag high.

2019 PROVINCIAL JARVIS / KAPLAN HONOURS WP Squash selected 11 men and 6 ladies to represent the province at this years’ Jarvis / Kaplan Cup – 7 of these 18 players are WPCC members.

Men’s A Team – Mighael Lombard Men’s B Team – Paul Cresswell, Dean Nortier and Gavin Kaplan Ladies A Team – Katie Mayhew, Shannon Harvey and Jordyn Campbell

LEAGUE SQUASH WPCC continues to be the Club within WP Squash with the largest numbers of teams competing across all leagues. The life of a league coordinator with so many teams is not an easy one and I would like to thank the league co-ordinators, namely Jeremy Chetwin, Kim Commins, Taryn Azevedo and Penny Usher for all the work they have put in over the course of the year. A special thank you to all the team captains too for the massive weekly effort. Whilst the 2018 season was not as successful as previous years overall, we still have more league sides entered than any other club in the province and have welcomed numerous new league playing members to the Club.

The 2019 season is well under way and all our sides are once again performing well.

CLUB CHAMPS The Club Champs in 2018 was extremely successful with 138 players competing over the various tournaments. The Doubles Club Champs which has replaced Summer League was a great success with 104 players involved in the tournament. I would like to thank Christian Hansen and 3PM for

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 the sponsorship received for which we are extremely grateful. The Men’s champion for 2018 is Paul Atkinson, and the Ladies champion is Alex Fuller.

COACHING and SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Our resident professional coaches, Ian Harvey and Dean Nortier have continued to make an active effort to expand the reach and exposure of their organised group and individual coaching sessions and this can be seen by the high demand for courts – a testament to their undoubted ability. The committee continues to be mindful of allowing too many tournaments and too much coaching at the expense of the playing members who are the life blood of our Club.

On the social development front Siyoli Waters has been running coaching development clinics for underprivileged children from Langa and Gugulethu on Saturday mornings for the past 4 years now. This involves organising transport to and from WPCC for 20 odd kids, coaching them and providing a meal. Well done Siyoli for your incredible commitment and dedication. Hopefully one of your protégés can emulate your achievements in the years to come.

Kim Commins and Wendy Harvey continue to run Go Play for the beginners, a programme that has now been running for nearly 20 years!

TOURNAMENTS WPCC remains the premier squash facility in the Western Cape where the majority of all major squash tournaments are played. Each year we host the WP Closed for both senior and youth squash, numerous youth tournaments, IPT squad sessions and touring groups. This past year we also hosted The Jesters Masters Doubles and Jesters Open Doubles Leagues, The South African National Defense Championship and in August 2019 we will host the first two rounds of The South African Open before the latter rounds move on to an all glass court at the V&A Waterfront.

SPONSORSHIP and Finance Financially the Squash section is in a healthy state and an important contributor to the overall financial health of WPCC as a whole. As such I would like to thank the main Club for their continued support in maintaining the WPCC courts as the premier courts in the Province, if not the country. I would also just like to thank Catharina Stone for all the effort she puts in as the Treasurer.

Our sincere thanks once again to our major tin sponsor, PAM GOLDING PROPERTIES. I would also like to thank Christian Hansen and 3PM for their continued sponsorship. Please support our sponsors – they are vital to the well-being of the Club.

GENERAL The on-line booking system has been a great success in making bookings so much easier for our members. There are still a few additional benefits we would like to add to the system in the near future so keep looking out for them.

We undoubtedly have an incredible Club and although the squash members and in turn all the members make it such, this is also as a result of all the WPCC staff who work tirelessly to maintain our facilities and manage the day-to-day running of the courts. In particular, I’d like to thank all the duty managers at the front-desk who often deal with problems that we don’t know about, it is much appreciated. With league squash played every weekday night and all the tournaments taking place at

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 WPCC, I would like to also thank our regular bar staff, Kobie, Jeremy and Thurston, who host not only ourselves but so too our travelling opponents – always with a smile.

Whilst the squash section is going through a small rebuilding phase as they say in the classics, we are in good shape at the moment with a vibrant membership and plenty of league sides catering for both top and lower level players as well as the youth and Masters. With some exciting plans in the pipeline I am confident we will continue to grow and add significant value to the main Club, our general membership and all those visitors to our courts.

While we do strive to be in the top half of all leagues and winning a fair share of them, what is more pleasing is to see the spirit and camaraderie amongst our squash members and the incredible club spirit across all strengths and ages. Thank you to all squash members for making our Club a happy place to be!

To my committee, the Executive Committee and management, thank you for all the hard work over the last year, I have enjoyed working with you all.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 TENNIS REPORT

CHAIRLADY: Nelene Gold COMMITTEE: Bridget Visee, Brenda Mohr, Richard Kilcullen, Cathy Cooke, Patrick Wharton-Hood, Lana Manson (co-opted).

Our season is divided into two sections, namely the Singles/Doubles League from September to November, and the Mixed Doubles League from January to March. In the former two teams won their leagues- the Ladies Singles 2nd team and the Vets Men’s Doubles (over 50’s) team. Congratulations to both these teams! The 2nd Ladies Singles Team consists mainly of our juniors so we are proud of their achievement. Our success in the Mixed Season was unfortunately meagre, with all 3 teams being relegated, and the Men’s Vets finishing in 3rd place. I think our biggest headwind is the lack of commitment by the players to the seven or eight weeks of a season. There are just too many options out there these days and folk are busy with family life, business or personal events. However, we will soldier on and hope to turn things around in the next year.

BVTS under the guidance of Bridget Visee continues to provide coaching to the more mature, teens and tots at WPCC. It is pleasing to see players of all ages enjoying some good coaching and improving their skills on court. I would encourage those of you with family members or friends who are keen to try the sport or just need to brush up to get in touch with Bridget, as she has kept up with the ever changing trends and coaching methods now used in the development of the game.

The Morning League Ladies continue to enjoy their Tuesday and Thursday mornings on court, and while they have faced many challenges of their own, such as ladies retiring due to injury, to play Bowls or moving away from Cape Town to greener pastures, the enthusiasm and energy from these ladies is to be commended. Thanks, too, to those who have undertaken to water our flower boxes with unfailing regularity!

Our courts are in good condition- courts 5 and 6 were resurfaced in January, with court 7 being high pressure cleaned and the lines repainted. Thanks to the Club for their support in keeping our facilities in good nick. The area in front of the Clubhouse where the grass died during the drought last year has been transformed with the old Astro providing a permanent green surface, while the Section bought pots and filled them with flowers to add some colour, character and cheer to the space.

The security of the Tennis Section has been vastly improved with the removal of the hedges and fencing off of the area where the vagrants had set up home. This space has now been cleared completely and a new hedge will be grown along the fencing. The ground has been partially grassed, with the rest to follow suit. We envisage adding some outdoor furniture to the space which will become a lovely area for braai’s and socialising after matches. The new Security Company, SOG, has also played its part in ensuring the homeless do not settle in the space behind the kitchen at night which had become a matter of grave concern especially to those who play or coach later in the evenings.

Important positions held by Senior Members: Bridget Visee – Coaches Representative on the Board of TSA (Tennis South Africa) Asnath Sebati – TSA Touring Coach and Junior Selector.

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Some of our juniors have excelled this year: Rebecca Widan – Growthpoint Super 8: Singles and Mixed finalist Growthpoint Super 8: Singles and Doubles winner Growthpoint Junior Masters: 3rd place, October 2018 CT Mini U14 Singles winner, February 2019 CT Mini U16 Singles winner, May 2019 CTT Schools U13 Team and selected to SA Schools Team. Jack Crafford – CTT Schools U15 Team Peet Karsten – Eden Mini U14 Winner CTT Schools U15 Team

To my Committee members, many thanks for your support in keeping the Tennis Section functioning well. Each member provides their insight and brings to the table a different vision. Richard Kilcullen, the Men’s Captain, stepped down after the end of the Mixed Season and I would like to thank him for a job extremely well done. It is not easy to select teams and stay in touch with all the players, confirming availability early in the week and then having to deal with crises by Friday! This is what the Committee deals with weekly and by the end of the season it is understandable that there is a huge sigh of relief! Bridget Visee has decided to take a well earned break from Committee matters and I thank her for her loyalty and time over many years. Lana Manson was co-opted during the year as she was doing duty as the Ladies Captain and I felt she should formally sit on the Committee. She has done a great job and I look forward to the next full season with her input. Di Gough is an incredibly able Secretary, and also runs the Morning League along with Brenda Mohr- both long standing and loyal members of the Club. Cathy Cooke who is affectionately known as the “Tea Lady” continues to support our players on Saturdays and makes sure we are all fed and watered! Patrick Wharton-Hood has also afforded us his help and expertise but will be leaving the Committee as his time and energy is at this point being focused on his job. I thank him for his contribution and know that he will be back in the future if at all possible.

I conclusion, I wish all our Tennis Section members success on the courts in the year to come.

Remember – Play with respect, win with grace!

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 OAKS REPORT

CHAIRMAN: Bruce Risien COMMITTEE: Graham Todd, Alistair Simpson, Steve Palframan

Once again it is your committee’s pleasure to submit our 42nd Oaks Annual Report for the period July 2018 to end June 2019. Matthew Pearce closed last year, and our August meeting moved from rugby to soccer. We were delighted to host John Comitis, Chairman of Cape Town City Football Club, in conversation with top soccer journalist Mark Gleeson. John, a very well known businessman, gave us a detailed background into the workings of his team, and the more complex issues around the PSL. He also outlined his vision to upgrade and rebuild Hartleyvale soccer stadium. John very graciously accepted Honorary Membership of the club. Vince Van der Bijl spoke to us in September and has been contracted to try and keep Zimbabwe cricket alive, amongst many other projects. He also touched on his passion which is The Masi project near Fish Hoek, and the Oaks would like to congratulate Vince on all his achievements there. Vince is always very entertaining and kept us amused with some older cricket stories. Following Vince we had one of our most unusual speakers with Monique Kalkman as our guest early November. Monique, a Dutch lady, crippled by polio at the age of 14, was introduced to us as part of the Global Challenge Golf Tournament, which was held in Hermanus. Having taken up wheel chair table tennis, she graduated to wheel chair tennis and finally took up competitive golf, on the advice of her doctors, in a specially adapted electric wheelchair. Monique has won Olympic Gold, US Open tennis and many other tournaments, and is an inductee into The Tennis Hall of Fame. Her inspirational talk with Dan Retief, left us admiring her remarkable triumphs over adversity. What a privilege to meet her and such a warm and wonderful person. Late November we were able to have our Annual Breweries Bash and must thank Lauren Iliffe of AB Inbev for her support and arranging our annual function. We really do value this Oaks tradition and we will be trying to negotiate for a function at the end of 2019. We had a great evening and must thank Trevor Quirk for saying a few words about the Oaks. We held the AGM as usual and it was no longer than the marathon 2018 meeting, which took 38 seconds. Your Committee would like to thank you all for your support and trust in us. The detailed Financial report was accepted and we have money in the bank! After the Christmas and New Year break, we had another great cricket personality, Mickey Arthur as our speaker at the end of January. Mickey is currently the Pakistan Cricket Coach, at the Cricket World Cup. A really good crowd attended and Mickey, in conversation with Robin Jackman gave us a rare and fascinating look into the workings of Pakistan cricket. He is passionate about his job and has really enjoyed his time with the team. He also shared his experience of being with the Australians and the Proteas over the last few years. Mickey thoroughly enjoyed the evening and caught up with many old friends on the night. He thanked us very much for the WPCC Honorary Membership, which he values very highly. How shocked we all were, with the very tragic and untimely loss of Tracey Hugo our Membership Secretary, who answered “The Sunset Call “on January 27th. Tracey was an integral cog in The Oaks wheel, and gave us great support. Others who answered the Sunset Call, were Gerard Welcomets, a Club duty manager and energetic Oaks sound man who passed away early December. Woody Kaiser, Bertie Dreyer and Danie Loubser were also great Club stalwarts who will be missed. Les Apollis, a Club

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 duty manager, lost his wife late last year. Our Oaks condolences were sent to all the families. Sadly as this report was being written, we heard that David “Fairy” Fairfax also answered The Sunset Call on Thursday 4th July. His regular seat at Oaks meetings, and in the Main Bar will be forever empty. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.

Dr Sherylle Calder, former Springbok hockey legend and Sports Scientist specialising in visual Skills Performance, spoke to us in April. Sherylle has a remarkable CV, and spoke about how she helped people like Ernie Els, who ultimately went on to win The Open at Muirfield in 2002. Sherylle despite offering her skilled services to SA Rugby, which were turned down, was then snapped up on a contract by Eddie Jones the current England Rugby Coach for 2019 Rugby World Cup. It is astonishing that such a talented scientist is ignored by South African Sports Bodies and their administrators. Sherylle was also made an Honorary Member, and was delighted with the award.

Brad Bing with Trevor Quirk spoke during May, and gave us a very good insight into his business passion Sporting Chance, which he founded some 28 years ago. He has a very well-known brand and has broadened the sporting horizons of many kids across the country. Brad enthusiastically accepted Honorary Membership of the club.

The Oaks over the years has been proud to sponsor The Oaks Bat, which is presented annually to a Cricket Section player, “for a good performance in the lower leagues”. Congratulations to Alan Goliath the 2018 / 2019 winner for a magnificent 140 not out in 44 balls vs Helderburg CC. He came in to bat with the score at 160/6 after 38 overs and 320/8 when the 50 overs were completed.

During the last year The Oaks made donations to The Animal Welfare Society, Stellenbosch on behalf of Sherylle Calder and supported the Global Challenge on behalf of Monique Kalkman, plus support to The SA Legion for Poppy Day (R4000). It was a great pleasure for the Oaks to be able to sponsor the new overhead projector, installed by Hart Media, for the Big Screen in the upstairs pub. Perfect timing for the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Our thanks go to Graham Todd, Alistair Simpson and Steve Palframan our hard working committee men, Bradley Seconds for the logistics, and Megan Dobson who always gives us excellent social media back up. Nashura and her bar staff, must be thanked and we acknowledge significant contributions made by Tracey and Gerard. Welcome to two new members of the full time staff, Tanja Hazel our new Membership Secretary, and Kaylene Hendricks, Events/Ops assistant. Lastly, but definitely not least, our thanks to the kitchen staff of the Bowls section for their platters catering, much appreciated. We must thank Robin Jackman, Dan Retief, Trevor Quirk and Mark Gleeson for their Q&A contributions to our meetings. They do such a professional job, and their contributions are much appreciated and add great value to all our meetings.

The Oaks is a section open to all adult WPCC members, and an opportunity to listen to excellent speakers, and to support the Club. The Oaks works to provide support for all sections of the Club, and we value the contributions made by our members.

We would like to encourage members, young and old to join and should anyone have a contact for a suitable speaker, please contact any member of the committee.

We look forward to the rest of 2019, our 43rd Year, and will endeavour to continue to uphold the Oaks traditions.

YOURS UNDER THE OAKS BRUCE, GRAHAM, ALISTAIR AND STEVE

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 WPCC Advert_Jan 2019.pdf 1 09/01/2019 01:22:59 PM FITNESS CENTRE

MANAGER: Richardt Tait

The fitness centre is a small intimate fitness facility, providing members, personal trainer’s clients and students of eta College Cape Town a personal and friendly fitness experience. The facility is located on the Club grounds next to the astro-turf hockey pitch, opposite the main clubhouse.

The fitness centre has a three-pronged approach: 1. Provide members of WPCC an opportunity to practice a healthy and fit lifestyle at an extremely reasonable cost. Members get a chance to train with exclusivity and in a friendly environment, something that is mostly lacking in the big clubs. 2. Provide students of eta College an opportunity to shadow trainers and get experience in their trade. The gym facilitates learning and plays an integral part to help students understand facility maintenance and a client centric approach. Since eta College offers qualifications in Fitness, Coaching and Sports management, one can understand why this is such a powerful collaboration. We currently have two of our students, Simbah and Monwa employed as casual staff members. They are able to assist any member with exercise prescription, if they feel the need. 3. Provide trainers an opportunity to run their businesses from the gym. Members do not have to search far to find world-class trainers.

The following classes are currently running in the Studio: • Strong by ZumbaTM (Rizqah – licensed Strong by ZumbaTM instructor • Little Yogis by Maalikah • Adult Dance by Viki • Karate Classes by Michael • Functional Fitness by Hayley • Knockout boxing by Sanchia: • HITT Class by Ric: • HITT Boxing by Ric, Riz and Richard:

We currently have eight trainers that offer their services to members and other clients at an extra cost. The price per trainer differs according to their years of experience and their field of expertise. These trainers are highly qualified and specialise in the following: • Training children through to youth • Sports conditioning training • Older adults • Training for weight loss

The operating hours of the gym are as follows: Monday – Thursday: 06:00 – 20:00 Friday: 06:00 – 19:00 Saturday and Public holidays: 07:00 – 13:00 Sundays, Good Friday, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day: Gym Closed

WPCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019 I know we will create a positive training environment for everyone using the gym and I would like to thank WPCC for the continued support and collaboration in running the gym.

I am available any time of the day on email at: [email protected] or on WhatsApp at: 083 320 7764.

I would like to thank everyone that contributed in making the gym a positive environment to train. Thank you to Simbah and Monwa for being here early morning and late evening, every day.

Thank you to the members for your continuous dedication and being part of the friendly atmosphere and thank you to Errol and the team for their help on the maintenance front. Thank you to Bradley and the Club for your continuous support of the gym and for allowing us to contribute and be a part of this great facility.

PLEASE REMEMBER WPCC IN YOUR WILL

The Club asks members to consider favourably a bequest to WPCC in their wills. Our Club provides many hours of leisure time, sports activity and cricket-watching at Newlands.

A way to assist in its longevity and prosperity is to remember the Club in the drawing of your will. A special board is mounted at the entrance to the Sports Centre to recognise members who have made bequests since 2003.
