These patterns can also be one of the indicators for prediction of the phylogenetic affinity of the nudibranch. Specimens of the nudibranch (Phyllidia varicosa) were collected from Koh Phi Phi and neighbouring islands in Krabi. The spicule network in the mantle of the central notum looked like a net, whilst at the edge of the mantle it appeared as a radial line crossing the body. The spicules in the nudibranch foot were interlaced and were perpendicular to the body length. A study of the spicule contents by indirect examination indicated that the CaCO3 content in the central notum, mantle edge, and foot was 460 ± 20, 462 ± 20, and 469 ± 20 mg/g dry weight, respectively. The spicule content in the various body regions did not differ significantly (p = 0.7). The relationship between total weight of the spicule network (TW) and whole body dry weight (WB) was estimated as TW = 0.446WB (R2 = 0.9994). -

Review known spawning areas for pelagic and invertebrate species, with the aim of evaluating these sites as candidate spawning refugia. 2. Evaluate each of the project’s habitat demonstration sites as potential juvenile/pre-recruit refugia for significant demersal species. Rationale for the Two-Track Approach to the Identification of Fisheries Refugia The two main life history events for fished species are reproduction and recruitment. It was noted by the RSTC that both of these events involve movement between areas, and some species, often pelagic fishes, migrate to particular spawning areas. It was also noted that many species also utilise specific coastal habitats such as coral reefs, seagrass, and mangroves as nursery areas. In terms of the effects of fishing, most populations of fished species are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of high levels of fishing effort in areas and at times where there are high abundances of (a) stock in spawning condition, (b) juveniles and pre-recruits, or (c) pre-recruits migrating to fishing grounds. -

Survey protocol at all sites consisted of an initial reconnaissance survey on which all algae, invertebrates and fishes that could be identified on site were listed and or photographed and collections of algae and invertebrates were collected for later laboratory identification. -

2 SPC Traditional Marine Resource Management and Knowledge Information Bulletin #39 – April 2018 Catching names: Folk taxonomy of marine fauna on Takuu Atoll, Papua New Guinea Anke Moesinger1 Abstract Folk taxonomies are a critical component for understanding resource use patterns and cultural, social and economic preferences on geographically remote Pacific atolls. To understand how people perceive and make use of their environment, 200 local names for marine vertebrates and invertebrates were collected and the hierarchical classification system was documented on Takuu Atoll in Papua New Guinea. The local nomenclature of the marine fauna of Takuu is based largely on shared fundamental morphological charac- teristics. Furthermore, all fish (Te ika) in the ocean are placed into one of five distinct groups in the hierar- chical classification system. These include three functional groups that are categorised by ecological niche, whereas another group encompasses all fish that possess a certain behavioural trait. The fifth group is unique in that it is solely made up of fish that were previously targeted during local Sii fishing expeditions. This article presents an analysis of Takuu residents’ descriptions and classifications of local fish and marine invertebrates.
