A professor of history, he is regularly cited as one of the world's most influen­ tial scholars in the study of the history of religion in America. Hatch had been vice presi­ dent for graduate studies and research at Notre Dame since 1989, having previously served as acting and associate dean of the University's College of Arts and Letters. He joined the Notre Dame faeulty in 1975.
