Abstract This practice-led PhD offers two contributions to the emerging discipline of sensory ethnography: a new theoretical framework for understanding the relationships between sensory experience, the sentient body and cultural phenomena and a series of new sensory research methods. It comprises the thesis presented here, a number of practical projects and a ‘dossier’ of associated outputs, including conference papers, workshops and symposiums, public engagement activities and successful funding applications. For the purposes of assessment and dissemination, all of these components have been collated into a single online presence: www.multisensoryethnography.com. The primary piece of practice associated with this PhD is a multisensory and participatory virtual archive of Temple Works, a Grade I listed building in South Leeds (Jackson, 2016a). This project, hereafter Experience Temple Works, is a proof of concept implementation of all of the methodological innovations advocated in this thesis and also embodies the theoretical contributions detailed in the writing. Experience Temple Works was created as part of a 30-month ethnography with the community of artists and makers resident within the building, hereafter Temple.Works.Leeds. The theoretical arguments presented in this thesis and the associated practice were developed in parallel and it is therefore recommended that they are ‘read’ in concert, allowing the relationships between them to be revealed. In order to facilitate this, the footnotes in this thesis regularly include links to pertinent ‘locations’ within the practice. The structure of this document intentionally blurs the conventional distinctions between the review of literature, methods and findings. These aspects of the research are inextricably linked and cannot effectively be addressed in isolation. The thesis offers an analysis of the potentialities and problems which sensory ethnography introduces, arguing that it offers new and innovative ways of understanding the lives of others but will only be established as an enduring and meaningful development within anthropology if a number of significant challenges can be overcome. Synthesising theoretical perspectives from numerous different disciplines, the thesis argues that multisensory research methods are central to understanding the complex and interdependent relationships between the senses and culture, bringing into question ethnographic studies which attempt to separate out individual sensory modalities from the multisensory matrix of perception. A new theoretical framework for sensory ethnography is introduced which attempts to unify key concepts from a range of cognate disciplines and is based upon a helical model of evolving and reciprocal correlations between sensory experience, the sentient body and cultural phenomena. Methodological contributions are made through the evaluation of a series of new technological modes of representation (developed by the author) which 4 not only have the potential to significantly impact upon the production, dissemination and reception of ethnographic studies, but which might also become a platform through which ethnographic knowledge is co-created with the research participants. Finally, the practical projects which implement and embody all of the methodological and theoretical contributions in this thesis are situated, with specific reference to the impact they have attained. The salient argument of this thesis is that sensory ethnography is an exciting but profoundly challenging new discipline. It has the potential to significantly impact upon any research project which implements fieldwork methods in the study of cultural phenomena but its future is dependent upon the rethinking of long-established practices related to the production and dissemination of ethnographic knowledge. Research Questions How might multisensory, participatory and ‘virtual’ technologies impact upon the 1 execution, dissemination and reception of ethnographic studies? Given the fundamental limitations of representing sensory experience in language 2 and writing, how might technological modes of representation create new ways of communicating the fieldwork experiences upon which ethnographic knowledge is founded? Do multisensory and embodied technologies have the capacity to engage 3 non-academic audiences in the processes of ethnographic research and to represent the resulting findings in ways which are meaningful to those audiences? To what extent might a more cohesive and integrative theoretical framework inform 4 the analysis of the relationships between sensory experience, the sentient body and cultural phenomena?     Arts Floor (1st floor) The Art Library was originally the lending library, with aisles and a central nave. It had terracotta columns and arches and a vaulted ceiling, covered up when the City Museum was in the building but since revealed. The book-cases were of American walnut. The side room was a small museum, only 22 square feet, containing among other exhibits a celebrated stuffed crocodile bought for 3 guineas and guaranteed not to shrink when washed! The Leeds City Police Headquarters were located in these rooms 1934-1965. Can you spot the sign for the Criminal Investigation Department, which was originally housed on the 1st floor? The room is 36ft high with terracotta alcoves. The oak ceiling is divided by wrought iron principals into panels, and there are mirrored panels at each end at gallery level.     Holbeck, South Bank SPD Summary of Formal Consultation and Responses SUMMARY OF CONSULTATIONS Prior to the formal consultation commencing in March, informal consultation was undertaken with key stakeholders. These were primarily stakeholders with landholdings, or interests in landholdings that are not yet developed or subject to a recent planning application. The draft was issued to Burberry, Commercial Estates Group (CEG), representatives of the owners of Midland Mills, the Holbeck Neighbourhood Forum, Network Rail, and the Highways Authority. Representations from these key stakeholders were considered and where appropriate incorporated into the draft SPD before going out to formal consultation. Formal Consultation took place over six weeks during March to April 2016 . The promotion of the exercise was undertaken via statutory notice in the newspaper, press release, the Council’s website, Social Media, Talking Point, direct e-mail invitation to Ward Members and the MP for Leeds Central, direct e-mail/letter invitation to over 300 individuals or groups who have an interest in HUV or responded to consultations on the Core Strategy; and over 550 direct letter invitations to residents living in the Holbeck, South Bank SPD boundary. On request, officers met with interested parties to discuss the draft SPD and to clarify any matters relating to the document. This included CEG and representatives from the Holbeck Neighbourhood Forum Board. Both parties subsequently submitted a formal representation. The formal consultation exercise included four drop-in sessions at the Round Foundry Media Centre, located in the heart of Holbeck Urban Village. The drop-in’s were spread over the six week consultation period on varying days and times to encourage attendance from different stakeholder groups: o Wednesday 23rd March 2016 – 9 am to 1 pm; o Monday 4th April 2016 – 12 pm to 4 pm; o Thursday 21st April – 9 am to 1 pm; o Tuesday 26th April – 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm.

    #AdventureBegins case study Adventure Begins was a collaboration project led by Inclusion North, partnered with West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Leeds City Council, the Yorkshire and Humber Talking Travel group and the LeedsBID digital initiative, Leeds Boost. In this document we will explore the success achieved by combining efforts on this worthwhile project. IN ASSOCIATION WITH #AdventureBegins The Journey Makers Adventure Begins event took place in Leeds on 3rd July and focused on addressing the barriers to travel for people with learning disabilities and/or autism. This one day event saw a host of activities taking place, beginning with an adventure story in Leeds Kirkgate Market, followed by a session on ‘how to plan your journey’. Split into groups, the teams then embarked on their own adventure - a treasure hunt across the City, that led them to Leeds Central Library where they explored useful travel apps, experienced virtual reality and shared their experiences. The objective of this project was about helping to promote choice and independence for people with hidden or physical learning disabilities and/or autism, and sparking the sense of adventure, building confidence and the new opportunities they can explore with the aid of tools such as their mobile phone, apps, and planning ahead.
