STEM STEM Club has been having a successful semester so far. We’ve continued meeting every Thursday. At our second meeting we went into the chemistry labs to perform an experiment where we filled some flasks with isopropyl alcohol vapor and lit it with a match (using tongs) which made for a nice “whoosh” sound and a pretty blue puff of flame in the bottle as the alcohol vapor burned, which was entertaining. At the third meeting we played with “Squishy Circuits” kits and made working circuits out of play dough. The Club members had some fun making LEDs light up and hooking up the motors and sound makers that came in the kits, the advisors seemed to be having fun too. And last but not least for our fourth meeting on the 8th, we had a party and experimented with liquid nitrogen. We had pizza and had a couple of bowls at the front with liquid nitrogen and the members were free to freeze and break a variety of things. Among the things frozen were flowers, giant marshmallows, a ping pong ball, balloons, a piece of paper, and a banana. Our Physics professor also joined us with a superconductor, which you would have to ask him for a more complete description of how it works, but as I understand it, when cooled the superconductor allows the magnetic field of a magnet to penetrate the superconductor without restraint and creates an effect where because the superconductor is expelling a magnetic field and also has the magnetic field of the magnet going through it, and this allows the magnet to float above the surface and levitate. Everyone was quite entertained, we also made ‘Dippin dots’ style ice cream by dripping ice cream into the bowl of liquid nitrogen and then scooping the frozen ‘dots’ out with a spoon, and we froze a few mini marshmallows this way as well. STEM Club has a few ideas for fundraisers coming up, including a poker tournament. On the 24th we plan to make a trip to the NYSMATYC (New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges) conference where we’ll get to hear some lectures and have fun with math. We also plan to go November 7th to the Rochester Museum and Science center to watch their electric theater where they play music on tesla coils. We just had sign-up sheets at the last meeting and already several members are signed up.
