In February 2017, the Charlottesville City Council had voted to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee from a public park, and Unite the Right members demonstrated against that decision on August 12. Counter- demonstrators marched through Charlottesville in opposition to the beliefs of Unite the Right. One participant was accused of driving a car into a crowd and killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer. The country was horrified. A national discussion on the use of Confederate symbols and monuments was already in progress after Dylann Roof murdered nine black church members at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 17, 2015. Photos of Roof posing with the Confederate flag were spread across the internet. Discussion of these events, including the origins of Confederate objects and images and their appropriation by groups today, was a backdrop for President Dudley’s appointment of the commission on Aug. -

Papers of the 2017 Gettysburg National Military Park Seminar The Shadow of Napoleon upon Lee at Gettysburg Charles Teague Every general commanding an army hopes to win the next battle. Some will dream that they might accomplish a decisive victory, and in this Robert E. Lee was no different. By the late spring of 1863 he already had notable successes in battlefield trials. But now, over two years into a devastating war, he was looking to destroy the military force that would again oppose him, thereby assuring an end to the war to the benefit of the Confederate States of America. In the late spring of 1863 he embarked upon an audacious plan that necessitated a huge vulnerability: uncovering the capital city of Richmond. His speculation, which proved prescient, was that the Union army that lay between the two capitals would be directed to pursue and block him as he advanced north Robert E. Lee, 1865 (LOC) of the Potomac River. He would thereby draw it out of entrenched defensive positions held along the Rappahannock River and into the open, stretched out by marching. He expected that force to risk a battle against his Army of Northern Virginia, one that could bring a Federal defeat such that the cities of Philadelphia, Baltimore, or Washington might succumb, morale in the North to continue the war would plummet, and the South could achieve its true independence. One of Lee’s major generals would later explain that Lee told him in the march to battle of his goal to destroy the Union army. -

Chapter Thirty-one “The Signs Look Better”: Victory at the Polls and in the Field (July-November 1863) Lincoln’s popularity soared after the victories at Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Port Hudson. His old friend from Illinois, Jesse W. Fell, reflected the changed public mood. In August, Fell told Lyman Trumbull that during the early stages of the war, “I did not like some things that were done, and many things that were not done, by the present Administration.” Along with most “earnest, loyal men, I too was a grumbler, because, as we thought, the Gov't. moved too slow.” But looking back, Fell acknowledged that “we are not now disposed to be sensorious [sic] to the ‘powers that be,’ even among ourselves.” To the contrary, “it is now pretty generally conceded, that, all things considered, Mr. Lincoln's Administration has done well.” Such “is the general sentiment out of Copperhead Circles.” Lincoln had been tried, and it was clear “that he is both honest and patriotic; that if he don't go forward as fast as some of us like, he never goes backwards.”1 To a friend in Europe, George D. Mattoon, Illinois Illinois State Historical Society History Symposium The Civil War Part III: Copperheads, Contraband and the Rebirth of Freedom Eastern Illinois University 27 March 2014 Preface For the purposes of this forum, the featured contextual development was undertaken for the express reason of introducing the subject matter to a wider audience through a broad presentation of Confederate States of America (CSA) insurrection, subversion and sabotage activities that took place under the expansive standard “Northwest Conspiracy” during 1864 and 1865. This examination is by no means comprehensive and the context is worthy of extensive 21st century research, assessment and presentation. The movement of Captain Thomas Henry Hines, CSA, military commander of the Confederate Mission to Canada, through the contextual timeline presents the best opportunity to introduce personalities, places and activities of consequence. Since Hines led tactical operations and interacted with the public-at-large during this period, the narrative of his activity assists in revealing Civil War-era contextual significance on the national, regional, State of Illinois and local levels. Detailing the activities of Hines and his Canadian Squadron operatives in the northwest is vital to the acknowledgment of significance at all levels. He (it was always he) was the kindly family doctor who had known you ever since you were "so high"—and knew the rest of your family, too. SHe was a friendly, caring presence during times of sickness or trouble, and on joyous occasions, as well. This wonderful doctor knew when it was important to examine a little girl's doll during an office visit. Not only that, he made house calls. He was a beloved and respected figure in the community. Is today's family doctor anything like him? Or has he completely vanished—blown away by threats of malpractice suits, high-tech medicine, overcrowded waiting rooms, and the higher status accorded specialists? To find the answers, Gettysburg chronicles a day in the life of Dwight Michael '78 M.D., who shares his views about being a family doctor, as well as his concerns about health-care reform. In other news, several Gettysburg College officials recently testified at a Congressional hearing on the exchange of land between the National Park Service and the College. The hearing received considerable media attention, but failed to clarify some of the issues, as the College had hoped. We present here a short but precise summary of the dispute.
