Most Canadians know Victoria Day as the unofficial start of , but what of the woman it's named for? Learn some royal trivia with these fascinating facts about Queen Victoria.

• Queen Victoria’s first name wasn’t actually Victoria. Christened Alexandrina (but called Drina as a child), she chose to use Victoria, her middle name, at age 18 when she ascended to the throne.

• Queen Victoria wasn’t supposed to be queen; can you imagine Prince Harry as king - even before the scandal of his stepping down from royal duties? Back in 1837, the unthinkable became reality for Victoria. At birth, Victoria was fifth in line to the throne, but the deaths of various princes and a lack of male heirs resulted in the young woman capturing the crown. • Queen Victoria is the reason wedding dresses are white; the young queen was a wedding trendsetter. In 1840, it wasn’t the norm to see a bride wearing white as the colour was thought to be too conservative, but Victoria didn’t care. She chose simplicity over opulence, and her lacy silk and satin gown gave a much-needed boost to the struggling lace trade. Several years later, a women’s publication stated that white was the “most fitting hue” for brides, and a tradition was born. We will be taking a break from the weekly Tuck Shop Cart. Instead of delivering chocolate and chips once a week, we would like to encourage all residents to get those arms and legs moving at our new Patio Chair Fitness classes starting on Tuesday May 19th on the patio outside of the Activity Room. Weather permitting, starting Tuesday, May 19th, if you are interested in participating, please phone Reception to sign up for a 2:00PM or 3:00PM class. There will be lots of room for social distancing and there will only be 6 participants per class. Floors 1 & 2 will have classes on Tuesday and floors 3 & 4 on Thursdays. Come and give it a try!

Emma’s Footcare is back and will be here on Sunday, May 31st from 7:30AM and on the last Sunday of every month. Make your appointment at Reception and take good care of your feet that need a much-deserved treat!

REMINDERS • Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, with soap and water or, if you don’t have access to soap and water, use an alcohol-based sanitizer and thoroughly rub your fingers and hands and let it dry before you touch anything. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth, unless you have just washed your hands. Cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue when you sneeze or cough, or cough into your elbow – avoid coughing or sneezing into your hands. • Physically distance yourself from another person by at least 2 metres (6 ft.) • Stay home and self-isolate from others if you feel unwell.

Breakfast will be delivered to your suite between 8:00AM and 9:00AM Lunch will be delivered to your suite between 11:30AM and 1:00PM Dinner will be delivered to your suite between 4:30PM and 6:00PM

Please remember to leave your dinner order form in your mailbox by 1:15PM each day. Thank you! After you have eaten your dinner, please rinse the container and put it outside your suite for pick-up before 8:00PM.

If you have something important to do or buy and your family is unable to help, please do not hesitate to call Reception and we will see if we can assist. Please note: If you would like assistance with washing your hair or taking a shower, we will be happy to arrange help. . If you have mobility issues, we are fortunate to have a wheelchair available. We would be happy to take you from your suite to one of the patios for a breath of fresh air and sunshine. Please let Reception know if you would like to arrange this.

Half of us are going to come out of this quarantine as amazing cooks. The other half may come out with a drinking problem …
