Gono MBA, Keller Graduate School of Management, 1999 BSc, Pepperdine University, 1995 Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Management Walden University November 2020 Abstract The sustainability of smallholder farms in Southern Africa is largely dependent on farmers’ decision-making abilities regarding land management practices; however, smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe have knowledge gaps on sustainable land management practices. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to gain a deeper understanding of specific knowledge gaps among smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe to tailor sustainable land management training to their needs. To address the research problem and purpose of the study, qualitative data were collected from multiple sources of evidence, including semistructured interviews with 7 smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe, archival data, and reflective journaling notes. This study was framed, first, by Ashely and Carney’s sustainable livelihoods framework and, second, by Leach, Mearns, and Scoones’s environmental entitlements framework. Fifteen themes were gleaned from five conceptual coding categories grounded in the conceptual framework: (a) relationship with trainers, (b) materials provided by trainers for sustainable land management, (c) land management strategies needed by farmers, (d) sustainable land management activities favored by farmers, and (e) unfavorable conditions for smallholder farmers. There is a need for agricultural transformation in Zimbabwe to drive change in knowledge systems, technology development and delivery, institutions, and policies. This research study may contribute to positive social change by providing training and innovative methods of sustainable land management practices to smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe aimed at improved rural food security and livelihoods, viable crop-livestock systems, and market participation. The conceptual aim is to connect the agrarian question with contemporary democratic theory, by inquiring into the global sources of ‘civil society’ and relating it to the phenomenon of semi-proletarianisation. There are three basic arguments. First, civil society cannot be understood in isolation from imperialism. The onset of the Cold War produced an ultra-imperial order under US leadership, with a ‘global development’ project crafted to its needs and a mode of rule preoccupied with the definition and enforcement of ‘civil society’. Second, capital accumulation in the postwar period has continued to operate in accordance with the laws of motion of the centre-periphery relationship; the main alteration has consisted in the closer integration of central-state economies with each other, along with a small number of industrial satellites.

It still remains a National Policy Agenda and a problem in most developing countries like Zimbabwe. Due to climate change, the impacts of droughts are expected to deepen where the capacity to adapt is low. Though it remains a challenge in communities, local people have devised different coping mechanisms based on the resources that are locally available but the effectiveness of these are questionable. Therefore, using both qualitative and quantitative methods this work aims at identifying the drought mitigation strategies used in ward 12 of Chegutu district. People are using drought mitigation strategies which include food aid, food for work, and sale of livestock, remittances and irrigation schemes where provision of food aid and food for work while the least effective were remittances and irrigation. The study also revealed that 72% of the community was not familiar with the effectiveness of all the drought mitigation strategies used. The strategies are held back by challenges in the ward which induce poor service delivery by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and government departments in mitigating droughts, poverty, corruption, lack of resources and unclear selection criteria of beneficiaries as well as lack of markets thereby leading to inefficiency of the drought mitigation strategies.
