Octoblepharum Pocsii (Calymperaceae), a Recently Described African Moss Species New to Laos and Asia

E-mail: [email protected] The genus Octoblepharum Hedwig (1801: 50), consisting of 18 accepted species, is mainly distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, with four species in Africa, one in Asia, and the majority of the species in the Neotropics; it is seldom found in temperate latitudes (Eddy 1990, Salazar-Allen 1991, Magill & Allen 2013). Octoblepharum albidum Hedwig (1801: 50) is the most commonly encountered species of the genus, occurring in southern China, India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines (Eddy 1990, Tan & Iwatsuki 1993) and larger parts of tropical Africa. The species is characterized by a considerable variation in plant and leaf size as well as a habitat preference for trees. As noted by Magill and Allen (2013) there has been an inclination to name all collections of Octoblepharum with eight peristome teeth O. albidum, but this is clearly an oversimplification. During the course of routine identification of moss specimens collected in Laos, I encountered two large-sized plant specimens of Octoblepharum that had eight peristome teeth and unusually long, fragile leaves. The leaves were considerably longer than normal sized O. albidum leaves: 10–13 vs. -

A note on Pottia intermedia (Turner) Fürnr. (Pottiaceae, Bryop- sida) with special reference to its phylogeny and new localities in SW Japan. Hikobia 16: 67–78. Eight new localities of Pottia intermedia (Turner) Fürnr. are recorded from Honshu and Shikoku (Hiroshima, Kagawa and Ehime Prefs.), SW Japan. Although it is widely distributed in the world, this species is a rare moss in Japan and is previously known from Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu for Japan. Japanese populations of P. intermedia grow on soil in open sites, especially in citrus orchards. Analytical illustrations with SEM images of peristome, spores and leaf papillae and a discussion on the phyloge- netic position of this species are provided based on the materials collected. CALYMPERACEAE William D. Reese† & Ilma G. Stone† Calymperaceae Kindb., Gen. Eur. N. Amer. Bryin. 11 (1897) Type: Calymperes Sw. Dioicous, rarely monoicous. Small to medium-sized or robust mosses in thin to dense tufts or mats, occasionally gregarious or solitary; mostly corticolous. Stems erect, simple or forked, or prostrate and with erect-ascending branches. Rhizoids brown to red-purple, lacking tubers Axillary hairs few to numerous per axil, 2–14 cells long, the lower 1 or 2 cells short and faintly tinged with brown, or only the lower cross walls coloured, or the cells hyaline; upper cells elongate, hyaline. Leaves generally variously contorted when dry, spreading-ascending when moist, elongate, typically consisting of a well-defined expanded-clasping hyaline lower lamina (sheath), and an elongate green upper lamina (limb); exterior cells of lower lamina often elongate, interior cells (comprising the cancellinae) numerous, large, hyaline, devoid of protoplasts at maturity and variously porose; costa percurrent to excurrent, in T.S showing a median row(s) of guide cells with abaxial and adaxial fields of stereid cells; margins of limb mostly thickened, toothed or entire, unbordered or bordered entirely or in part with elongate hyaline cells in 1 or more layers; cells of limb mostly isodiametric, smooth or papillose; intramarginal files of differentiated cells (teniolae) present or lacking in leaves. Gemmae commonly present, seriate-multicellular, adaxial (rarely abaxial) on tips (or more proximal) of mostly unmodified leaves, but highly modified gemmiferous leaves characteristic in some species, especially of Calymperes. Perigonia lateral, gemmiform, consisting of a few highly reduced leaves enclosing the antheridia. -
