The Fannaichs

“The Fannaichs form an exceptional fine cluster of high mountains contained in a well defined triangle which fans out southwards from Braemore Junction on the Ullapool / road towards Strath Bran and the railway line. The from to Ullapool via Garve and Junction passes the north east side of the Fannaichs over the Dirrie More betweeen Loch Glascarnoch and Loch Droma. The branches west towards Dundonnell and Gairloch at Braemore Junction. The 5 KM stretch of road between there and Loch a’Bhraoin gives a direct approach to the mountains on their north west side. The main ridge of the Fannaich mountains rises above the north shore of Loch Fannaich on the east side of the track which leads across The Nest to Loch a’Bhraoin. It consists of ten tops over 914m, seven of which form the spine of the continuous chain ( with short ridges) stretching north west from the east end of Loch Fannich for 13 miles to the A832 road“.

“Coigach forms a very compact mountain area in the extreme north-west tip of Ross-Shire along a boundary with Assynt in Sutherland. The area is basically a peninsula, jutting out to the north-west onto the blunt sandstone point , lined with cliffs , which stretches from Reiff to Rhuba Coigech. Two thirds of the peninsula is flat moorland. The mountains lie inland along its south -eastern base. From Rhubha Coigeach the coastline falls back into Ardmair Bay and the mouth of Strath Kinnaird. The easiest approach to Coigach is by road from Ullapool to Ledmore Junction ( A835) which continues north to Lochinver and Kylesku. It passes along the south-east edge of the area and the base of the three principal mountains. At Rumrunner , 7 KM to the north of Ardmair Bay , a secondary road , single track with passing places , branches north- west to Achiltibuie, and this provides access to the Coigach . It follows a twisting scenic line along the loch- sides between the highly eroded sandstone crags which arise along it’s route“.

Loch Maree to

“ The area between and the Little Loch Broom contains a complex group of mountains which lie mainly within Letterewe, Fisher field , Strathnasheallag , and Dundonnell deer forests. The north-west coastline stretches from the head of Loch Ewe and Gruinard Bay to the Scoraig peninsula at the mouth of Loch Broom. To the south-east lie the mountains of Fannaich. Within these boundaries is an uninhabited maze of mountain and loch which exhibit some of the finest wilderness scenery in the . ( 1062m) towers above the head of Little Loch Broom to the south of Dundonnell. It is the dominating feature in the landscape from all directions, a magnificent eample of Torridonian architecture which is justly considered to be one of the half dozen most splendid mountain ridges in Scotland. A good motor road ( A832) passes along three sides of the area , ( south , west and east ) , but as the majority of the mountains lie in considerable distance inland, onward progress depends mainly on the network of stalker’s paths which cross from all sides “.
