Whether it be through concert appearances or recordings, television or films, commercials or education, Bill Cosby has the ability to touch people’s lives. His humor often centers on the basic cornerstones of our existence, seeking to provide an insight into our roles as parents, children, family members, and men and women. The Case of Donald J. Trump†
THE AGE OF THE WINNING EXECUTIVE: THE CASE OF DONALD J. TRUMP† Saikrishna Bangalore Prakash∗ INTRODUCTION The election of Donald J. Trump, although foretold by Matt Groening’s The Simpsons,1 was a surprise to many.2 But the shock, disbelief, and horror were especially acute for the intelligentsia. They were told, guaranteed really, that there was no way for Trump to win. Yet he prevailed, pulling off what poker aficionados might call a back- door draw in the Electoral College. Since his victory, the reverberations, commotions, and uproars have never ended. Some of these were Trump’s own doing and some were hyped-up controversies. We have endured so many bombshells and pur- ported bombshells that most of us are numb. As one crisis or scandal sputters to a pathetic end, the next has already commenced. There has been too much fear, rage, fire, and fury, rendering it impossible for many to make sense of it all. Some Americans sensibly tuned out, missing the breathless nightly reports of how the latest scandal would doom Trump or why his tormentors would soon get their comeuppance. Nonetheless, our reality TV President is ratings gold for our political talk shows. In his Foreword, Professor Michael Klarman, one of America’s fore- most legal historians, speaks of a degrading democracy.3 Many difficulties plague our nation: racial and class divisions, a spiraling debt, runaway entitlements, forever wars, and, of course, the coronavirus. Like many others, I do not regard our democracy as especially debased.4 Or put an- other way, we have long had less than a thoroughgoing democracy, in part ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– † Responding to Michael J. -

Controversial “Conversations” Analyzing a Museum Director’S Strategic Alternatives When a Famous Donor Becomes Tainted
Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership 2019, Vol. 9, No. 1, pp. 85–106 https://doi.org/10.18666/JNEL-2019-V9-I1-8390 Teaching Case Study Controversial “Conversations” Analyzing a Museum Director’s Strategic Alternatives When a Famous Donor Becomes Tainted Jennifer Rinella Katie Fischer Clune Tracy Blasdel Rockhurst University Abstract This teaching case places students in the role of Dr. Johnnetta Cole, director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art, as she determines how to respond to a situation in which Bill Cosby—well-known entertainer, spouse of a museum advisory board member, donor, and lender of a significant number of important pieces of art on display at the Museum—has been charged with sexual misconduct. Representing the Museum, the director must weigh the cost of appearing to support her friends the Cosbys against the value of displaying one of the world’s largest private collections of African American art. This case extends stakeholder theory by utilizing Dunn’s (2010) three-factor model for applying stakeholder theory to a tainted donor situation. Keywords: arts administration; philanthropy; stakeholder theory; crisis communication; nonprofit leadership; tainted donor; ethical decision making Jennifer Rinella is an assistant professor of management and director of the nonprofit leadership program, Helzberg School of Management, Rockhurst University. Katie Fischer Clune is an associate professor of communication, College of Business, Influence, and Information Analysis, Rockhurst University. She is also director of the university’s Honors Program. Tracy Blasdel is an assistant professor of management and marketing, Helzberg School of Management, Rockhurst University. This would be a mis- take for several reasons. To start, wealth inequality is not increasing in Canada. Statistics Canada data show that wealth held by the lowest three income quintiles rose more than that held by the highest two quintiles, raising their share of wealth from 27.1% in 2010 to 29.5% in 2019. The gain in wealth for those with lower incomes reflects increases for both financial and non-financial assets, and began before Canada’s housing market took off in 2015. Canada’s middle class holds more financial assets than the middle class in the United States and, therefore, is less vulnerable to a downturn in the housing market. -

African American Philanthropy
African American Philanthropy Erica L. Ball, Ph.D. candidate in History, GC, CUNY Introduction Despite what many believe, African Americans have maintained a rich tradition of philanthropy. From as early as the eighteenth century to the present day, African-Americans have donated their time and resources to a variety of philanthropic organizations and causes, whether they be community-based mutual aid organizations, churches, or major political movements. According to Emmett Carson, three major strains have dominated the patterns of African American philanthropy: humanitarian aid, designed to ameliorate individual and community hardship; institutional development or self-help regarding the establishment of churches, schools, and commercial enterprises for black communities; and movements for social change "from the abolition of slavery to the elimination of all legal, educational, and economic barriers to racial equality." Surprisingly, few African-Americans define their traditions of giving as "philanthropy." Surveys indicate that many African Americans see their donations of time and money as unremarkable, and believe that "philanthropy" is a term reserved for multimillionaires, many black donors would not describe their behavior as philanthropic and are uncomfortable with the term. Consequently, many development officers and board members argue that educational programs must be at the forefront of black philanthropic efforts for the twenty-first century. Researchers predict several new trends in the charitable giving patterns of the African American population that will result from political, social and demographic transformations that first began in the 1960s. These changes include: * The growth of the black middle and upper classes * The end of legalized segregation and subsequent dispersal of the black population. -
