Sowards rated it really liked it Shelves: fictionmiddle-grade-and-juvenileaudio-bookmystery-suspense-thrillers I listened to this one with my kids and we enjoyed it. Jun 12, Nevaeha Palkar rated it really liked it. I was in the mood for a quick audiobook and this was next on my Hoopla list. I just got a new job with a commute longer than 10 minutes and I can finally listen to audiobooks for longer amounts of time hooray! Mystery of the Midnight Rider opens up with the line, "Peyton Evans named her horse after the time it was born. Mystery of the Midnight Rider was rather fun and brings back the enjoyment I felt while reading the cruise ship case earlier in the series. I've never been a "horse girl" because I don't have those affluent resources and I was too occupied shoving my face in books. I've been on a horse once during a guided trail at youth summer camp. I enjoyed it but everything I know about horses comes from dramatic scenes in historical romances. Mystery of the Midnight Rider featured great insight on horse competitions and it was really immersive. I thought the key scenes of sabotage were really interesting as well like torn saddles and intentionally feeding horses chocolate to fail a drug test. It helped Mystery of the Midnight Rider the reader as well as boost the element of mystery for those who don't know much about horses, such as myself. My previous complaint with this series made an unfortunate return: the use of "dubious". I counted it used 3 separate times. Please use a thesaurus! There are plenty of synonyms for dubious. You could use unsure, suspicious, doubtful I'm sure there were other words repeated but I had this same issue in Curse of the Arctic Star. It's a tiny complaint, but I'm that snobgoblin. Otherwise, it was a great mystery that I eventually pieced together before the reveal. I hope the future books in this series are just as exciting and quick-paced as Mystery of the Midnight Rider. Yee-haw you later! View 2 comments. Oct 05, Ashlee rated it liked it. Saw the ending coming, I sound like a broken record I'll still read any new Nancy Drew material, but they need to make these mysteries a little better. I get they are considered "kids" books but they should keep in mind how many adults read the series when WE were kids and they should pay homage to the original stories in these new spin-offs. Mar 07, Katherine Tingen rated it it was amazing. Dana Mystery of the Midnight Rider trainer gets really mad at Payton for disobedience and disrespecting herself and Dana. Right before Payton's first round in her show, Dana comes and tells her that her prize horse, Midnight, has just failed his drug test and that she may be suspended from the show. Later right after she goes home Payton finds a note threatening to kill her if she doesn't back out In the beginning of the book Mystery of the Midnight Rider you meet Ned and Nancy at their friend Payton's Horse show. Later right after she goes home Payton finds a note threatening to kill her if she doesn't back out of the race but no one will let her. The next day to everyone's surprise Paytons saddle is cut into tons of little peaces. Once everyone has left Payton calls Nancy telling her Mystery of the Midnight Rider she thinks that someone has been stalking her. The next day right before Paytons Mystery of the Midnight Rider Prix Nancy Mystery of the Midnight Rider her "scraping mud of her saddle" when really she was ruining her back up saddle. It doesn't dawn on Nancy though intil Payton is racing and Nancy goes and stops the race and Payton admits that she has been sabotaging her own career. Payton has to go and explain it to the police and the community of River Heights. Payton then decides to quit from competitive horse riding. Then she treats Ned and Nancy to a date in the forest. Payton's horse gets drugged and fails it's drug test. Dana is very worried that Payton her star pupil will get suspended or won't be able to get into the Grand Prix. This makes Dana very mad and Payton gets yelled at. Then Payton throws a small fit and doesn't want to talk to Dana. Also when Neds Mystery of the Midnight Rider hosts a barbecue. When they open the barbecue they find a note addressed to Payton saying that if she doesn't back out of the show someone is going to come and kill her. Everyone then gets super nervous and worried for Payton but insist that she keep the show going. Knowing this is scaring Payton Ned won't leave her side Mystery of the Midnight Rider give her any privacy. I really like the book. Some things I liked about the book were that there was always some mystery and suspence. I Mystery of the Midnight Rider enjoyed the creepy sensation that someone was always watching you. And my favorite thing was that there was sooo much discription and I felt like I was there. I disliked that the story was so short. And then I didn't like that Jessica Paytons Enemie is so rude to everyone she meets. And the last thing that displeased my was that the main big bad guy is siblings with Paytons trainer; I was not happy. Jan 26, eden adi rated it really liked it Shelves: middle-grade. I loved this mystery! Pretty difficult to guess the culprit, and great characters and setting. May 06, Britney Dillon rated it really liked it. I'm still really enjoying this new series. I appreciated that the mystery ended when the book ended. Non-spoiler section : We have a solid mystery here: a compelling story-line, a good list of suspects, interesting characters, a cute subplot, sleuthing and brilliant detective skills. Most of the issues had to do with coherency. There were things that I felt wouldn't happen, which I guess served the themes? Explained more in the spoiler section. Along with the coherency thing, the characters do not sound their age. I thought Payton, the central character, was 16 at least, but her trainer Dana made a comment implying that Payton is 12 years old. Just about everyone out there is wearing beige breeches and tall boots. At the moment it was crowded with horses and riders warming up for their next class. All of them—male and female, teenagers and adults—were dressed almost exactly alike. Is that you? Ned waved. She was about sixteen, with a slender build and delicate features that made her look tiny atop Mystery of the Midnight Rider horse, an enormous bay with a splash of white on its forehead. And I never miss coming out to watch this show. The annual River Heights Horse Show was a prestigious competition, attracting top hunter- jumper riders from all over the country. When she responded, her voice was even quieter. Time for a change of subject. A sad look flitted across her face. I rolled my eyes at him.

  • America's Changing Mirror: How Popular Music Reflects Public
AMERICA’S CHANGING MIRROR: HOW POPULAR MUSIC REFLECTS PUBLIC OPINION DURING WARTIME by Christina Tomlinson Campbell University Faculty Mentor Jaclyn Stanke Campbell University Entertainment is always a national asset. Invaluable in times of peace, it is indispensable in wartime. All those who are working in the entertainment industry are building and maintaining national morale both on the battlefront and on the home front. 1 Franklin D. Roosevelt, June 12, 1943 Whether or not we admit it, societies change in wartime. It is safe to say that after every war in America’s history, society undergoes large changes or embraces new mores, depending on the extent to which war has affected the nation. Some of the “smaller wars” in our history, like the Mexican-American War or the Spanish-American War, have left little traces of change that scarcely venture beyond some territorial adjustments and honorable mentions in our textbooks. Other wars have had profound effects in their aftermath or began as a result of a 1 Telegram to the National Conference of the Entertainment Industry for War Activities, quoted in John Bush Jones, The Songs that Fought the War: Popular Music and the Home Front, 1939-1945 (Lebanon, NH: University Press of New England, 2006), 31. catastrophic event: World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the current wars in the Middle East. These major conflicts create changes in society that are experienced in the long term, whether expressed in new legislation, changed social customs, or new ways of thinking about government. While some of these large social shifts may be easy to spot, such as the GI Bill or the baby boom phenomenon in the 1940s and 1950s, it is also interesting to consider the changed ways of thinking in modern societies as a result of war and the degree to which information is filtered.

Patriotism, Courtesy of Toby Keith: The Voice of Country Music After September 11 Arin Rose Dickerson Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Communication Dr. Rachel L. Holloway, Chair Dr. Beth M. Waggenspack Dr. Robert E. Denton, Jr. 25 April 2006 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: epideictic, symbolic convergence, dramatism, Toby Keith, September 11, country music Copyright 2006, Arin Rose Dickerson Patriotism, Courtesy of Toby Keith: The Voice of Country Music After September 11. Arin Rose Dickerson ABSTRACT In releasing the songs Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American) and American Soldier in the aftermath of September 11, country artist Toby Keith enacts a tradition that has been established in the world of country music since the Civil War, that of producing wartime songs of patriotism. I conducted an organic analysis of both songs as rhetorical acts produced and consumed within a particular rhetorical context. Because country music is fundamentally a discourse that celebrates the attitudes, values and experiences of its audience, I first analyzed these two songs as instances of epideictic rhetoric. As an epideictic rhetor, Keith reinforces the traditional values of the country music audience, uniting them in celebration of the communal identity that renders them a rhetorical community. That shared identity enables Keith to advance a rhetorical vision of a post-September 11 reality, attributing meaning to the events of September 11 and the ensuing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. I use pentadic analysis to illuminate the vision presented in each song, and I utilize both media coverage and the Billboard charts to determine how well this vision “chained out” amongst the country music audience.

  • Combatting Sea-Level Rise in Southern California: How Local Governments Can Seize Adaptation Opportunities While Minimizing Legal Risk
19 HASTINGS WEST NORTHWEST J. ENVTL. L. & POL’Y 463 (2013) COMBATTING SEA-LEVEL RISE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: HOW LOCAL GOVERNMENTS CAN SEIZE ADAPTATION OPPORTUNITIES WHILE MINIMIZING LEGAL RISK Megan M. Herzog* and Sean B. Hecht** As the primary coastal land use decisionmakers in Southern California, local governments will make choices that will shape the region’s resilience to sea-level rise. To implement adaptation plans effectively, local governments must understand the ways law enhances their adaptive capacity by providing them with the necessary legal authority to take actions to adapt to changing sea-level conditions. Additionally, local governments must appreciate legal risks—that is, potential legal limitations on adaptation tools, as well as potential liability to private parties for harms related to the adverse effects both of adaptation actions and sea-level rise itself. This article identifies how local governments can harness legal doctrines to support aggressive, innovative strategies to achieve successful sea-level rise adaptation outcomes for Southern California while minimizing legal risk. We broadly outline likely sea-level rise impacts in Southern California, and evaluate the risks and opportunities of potential protection, accommodation, and retreat adaptation strategies that local governments could deploy. We focus primarily on four categories of legal issues that may be implicated as Southern California localities plan for the impacts of sea-level rise: 1) the California Coastal Act, 2) the public trust doctrine, 3) the constitutional takings doctrine, and 4) the California Environmental Quality Act. We divide our analysis of these legal doctrines into their potential interactions with both private development and critical municipal infrastructure like roads, power plants, and ports.
