MEMBERS’ HELP NEEDED IN LOBBYING CONGRESS TO AUTHORIZE MINTING OF SPECIAL MAYFLOWER COMMEMORATIVE COIN IN OBSERVANCE OF 400TH ANNIVERARY OF LANDING OF THE MAYFLOWER IN CAPE COD BAY IN 1620

FSMD Deputy Governor Jim Preston sent this email reminder:

he Society of Mayflower Descendants is rapidly approaching our 400th Anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims in 1620 in Plymouth. To commemorate this milestone in American and Mayflower history a special half dollar coin has been pro- T posed to be minted by the U.S. Treasury for the year 2020. A similar coin was authorized by Congress in 1920 honoring those brave souls who made the perilous journey so long ago.

U.S. Senator John Hoeven (R-ND) and U.S. Representative Bill Foster (D-IL) have introduced bills in Congress to au- thorize the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of the 400th Anniversary of the arrival of the Pilgrims. This coin would honor the Pil- grims from whom we are descendants and help in our mission to educate the public about this important part of American history.

As a member of the Florida Society of Mayflower Descendants, would you take just a moment to email Florida Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio to ask them to co-sponsor Senate Bill S.1715 in the Senate and email your U.S. Representa- tive in the House to request they co- sponsor House Bill HR.2980 in the House to authorize the Congress to have these coins minted?

Here is my email message to Senator Nelson as a sample:

Message:

Dear Senator Nelson, I am writing as a member of the Florida Society of Mayflower Descendants to request your support as a cosponsor for Senate Bill S.1715, "A bill to require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Pilgrims." This bill was initially sponsored by Senator John Hoeven and introduced on 7/8/2015. Such coins will honor the 400th anniversary of the landing of the Mayflower Pilgrims on our shores. The General Society of May- flower Descendants has over 28,000 proud members across America whose lineage descends from those brave Pilgrims who ventured across the ocean in search of freedom. This important bill will help us with our mission to educate the public about this important part of our American history. In 1620, a small group of barely 100 souls arrived in New England after a perilous jour- ney to establish a settlement in the New World. They arrived in Plymouth where they began a "civil body politic" through the which set a precedent for self-governance that remains to this day. In 1920 the Congress authorized the mint to produce a similar coin in commemoration of the 300th Anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims. This legislation has bipartisan support. Senator Hoeven (R-ND), represents one party and the House sponsor of the corresponding bill, Representa- tive Bill Foster, (D-IL), represents the other with HR.2980. You may contact staff member Tyler Hardy in Senator Hoeven's office to find out the details of this bill. Won't you please join Senator Hoeven as a co-sponsor of the bill. Thank you for your consider- ation.

Sincerely James W. Preston Brandon, Florida

EDWARD DOTY COLONY

hanksgiving is a favorite time of year to gather with family and friends. The Colony celebrates this event each year. On Saturday, November 14th we assembled at Azalea Trace Retirement Community to honor our ancestors, T enjoy a delicious early Thanksgiving meal and hear a program that every genealogist needs to know.

Our guest speaker, Katherine Sims (photo at left), is a graduate student at the University of West Florida, studying historical archaeology. She works at the Florida Public Archaeology Network to educate the community about archaeology and history through public events. Katherine recently completed exten- sive research on burials in Pensacola's historic AME Zion, Magnolia, and St. Michael's cemeteries. She spoke on “Tombstone Tales: Cemeteries, Symbols, and Stories.”

If your colony has not offered a program of this type it is highly recommended before you go visiting those old graveyards or cemeteries. Yes there is a difference between the two, and you’ll also know the story the head stones are revealing.

MYLES STANDISH COLONY

he Myles Standish Colony of Naples, FL, met on Thursday 5 Nov 2015 for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner at the Club at Longshore Lakes in Naples with T 52 members and guests in attendance. The Standish Colony was chartered 13 May 1975 as the 10th colony under FSMD, so its members celebrated their 40th anni- versary with a lovely cake.

The featured speaker was Myles Standish Colony member Fran Lopus, who served as colony governor from 1999-2002, as state governor from 2005-2008, as AG from

2008-2011 and as DGG from 2011-2014. Her topic was the history of the Myles Standish Colony as well as asking the ques- tion "Are you a Saint or are you a Stranger?"

Our next colony meeting is scheduled for Thursday 7 Jan 2016 and will be held at the Club at Longshore Lakes in Naples. The speakers will be Catherine and Julia, the daughters of Ruthie Schlabach, the State Junior Chair. They will speak on their an- cestor William White, as well as their amish side. We are encouraging all of our mem- bers to bring their "juniors" to this meeting.

We would also wish to invite anyone from Three FSMD Governors: from left to right, current Governor Ken Carter, past FSMD the Florida Colonies to our spring meeting on Governor Fran Lopus (2002-2005), and past FSMD Governor Ren Cushing (2011-2014). Saturday 30 April 2016, where we will have Ren is currently serving as GSMD’s Captain General. the honor in hosting Lea Sinclair Filson, Gov- ernor General of the General Society of May- flower Descendants. ELDER WILLIAM BREWSTER COLONY

he Elder William Brewster Colony met on Friday 6 Nov 2015 at the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Coconut Grove with 19 mem- T bers and guests present. The featured speaker was FSMD Gov- ernor Kenneth Carter who presented a very interesting and complete story of his passenger Isaac Allerton. At the conclusion of his talk, colony governor Clara Waterman Powell presented him with a certifi- cate of appreciation (see photo at right).

It was an honor for this southern most colony to have Ken and his lovely wife Kathleen visit our colony. They were most gracious as they greeted each colony member during the social prior to the meeting, sharing interesting stories with each colonist..

The next colony meeting is scheduled for Friday 12 Feb 2016 at the oceanside Coral Reef Yacht Club in Coconut Grove hosted by colony captain Jon Stemples. For reservations and information please contact colony governor Clara Waterman Powell ar MayflowerPow- [email protected].

Members and guests of the Elder William Brewster Colony who attended the 6 Nov 2015 lunch meeting GOVERNOR WILLIAM BRADFORD COLONY he Governor William Bradford Colony met for its Thanksgiving luncheon on Saturday 7 Nov 2015 at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Our meal included turkey and all the trimmings. Our special guests and speakers were Reynolds (Ren) and T Muriel Cushing. Ren is FSMD’s immediate past Governor and current AG. He’s also serving as Captain General of GSMD. Muriel is FSMD’s current DGG and Historian. At our meeting Muriel surprised new member Catherine Rayburn by an- nouncing that she and her aunt Beatrice Cayzer had been approved by Plymouth. Catherine Rayburn and Beatrice Cayzer, de- scendants of John Howland, had been approved at Plymouth on October 30 and were elected to FSMD on November 6, the day before our meeting. Muriel Cushing told about the Bridges Project to help DAR and SAR members to link their Revolutionary War patriots’ lineages back to Mayflower passengers, helping them to become members of the Mayflower Soci- ety.

Vice Governor Helen Bennett introduced our guest speak- er Ren Cushing, who spoke on “If You Were a Colonist: What It Was Like in the Period Between 1700 and 1776.” During the early 18th century colonists clustered along the Eastern Seaboard and looked east toward Eng- land as more sophisticated and intellectual. The British thought the colonists were “country bumpkins” and inferi- or. On the positive side, the colonists were risk takers and sought to better their condition. The 1700’s were a

Colony governor Laura Sharpe Brock and Muriel Cushing period of expansion in the 13 colonies. The population grew from 200,000 to 2 million. Colonists could own land, allowing the males to be able to vote and participate in the local government. Frontier life led to a sense of community. For many years England neglected the colonies, until King George III came to the throne in 1760. He imposed taxation and more control of the colonies. The colonists, who had developed a greater sense of self-esteem and self- determination, sought to be freed from the new restrictions and taxa- tion without representation imposed by England, leading to the American Revolution.

HENRY SAMSON COLONY

embers and guests of the Henry Samson Colony met for lunch on Wednesday 18 Nov 2015 at M the Marina at Edison Ford in Ft. Myers. One of the highlights of this meeting was a raffle to raise funds for the purchase of a colony flag. The main prize of the raffle was a very nice Mayflower afghan throw donated by colony vice governor Clyde Blanchard that contains a picture of the Mayflower vessel and also displays the names of each of the passengers that signed the Mayflower Compact. [Editor’s Note: At the colony’s 19 Jan 2013 meet- ing hosting GSMD’s then-Governor Gen- eral Bruce MacGun- nigle, your editor won the raffle for an identical afghan, which is one of my most prized possessions.]

The meeting was called to order by colony governor Ellen Full (see photo at right) and the invocation was given by colony elder Bill Cox (see photo at left). The pledge of allegiance to the US flag was led by director Larry Peck, the Pilgrim’s Pledge was led by colony secretary Mary Keiser and the Mayflower Com- pact was read by colony captain Albert Myers.

Member Laura Fair Randall introduced the guest speaker, Woodward S. (Woody) Hanson, 5th generation Ft. Myers resi-

Laura Fair Randall dent and historian, keeper of The Hanson Family Archive at the Seminole Lodge Gallery in Ft. Myers. His topic was “A Slice of History: Fort Myers Pio- neers and the Seminole-Miccosukee Indians.” Woody Hanson

The Mayflower afghan raffle was won by Robert McGuire, husband of colony treasurer Anne McGuire who proudly dis- plays it in the photo at left.

In attendance at the meeting were dual members (Tilley & Samson Colonies) Muriel Cushing, FSMD Historian and DGG, and her husband Reynolds P. (Ren) Cushing, FSMD’s AG and GSMD’s Captain General. Muriel gave a report on the efforts of GSMD to convince its members to lobby Congress to au- thorize a coin commemorating the 400th anniversary in 2020 of the landing of the Pilgrims in 1620 in New England. REPORT FROM 78TH ANNIVERSARY ANNUAL MEETING IN THE VILLAGES

inety-one (91) members and guests of the Florida Society gathered in the ballroom of The Waterfront Hotel in The Villages on Friday evening 20 N Nov 2015 for the annual Mayflower Banquet opening the 78th anniver- sary annual meeting. FSMD Governor Ken Carter, a charter member and the first governor in 2003 of the host James Chilton Colony (as well as its colony treasurer ever since), called the meeting to order at the end of a relaxed social hour during which old acquaintances were renewed and new friendships were made.

FSMD Captain Helen O. Bennett led a contingent of the host colony officers in the trooping of the colors, and then led all in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag and the Sa- lute to the Mayflower Society flag.

Each place setting (see photo below left) featured a lovely handmade placemat with the names of the signers of The Mayflower Compact made by Chilton Colony vice governor Shirley Smith and a professionally-looking program produced FSMD Governor Kenneth E. Carter by Chilton Colony member Richard S. FSMD Captain Helen O. Bennett Wheeler. Also includ-

ed was an innovative (and edible) table favor in the form of a Pilgrim hat made by putting a mini Reese’s peanut butter cup upside down on a chocolate covered cookie. Chilton Colony governor Marcia Dalkalitsis (see photo above) wel- comed all in attendance on behalf of her colony’s members and Governor Ken Carter offered a gracious response.

Dinner featured succulent turkey breast slices, green beans, carrots and mashed potatos with gravy, and a slice of the traditional Mayflower cake for dessert. Following dinner, Governor Carter introduced the GSMD and FSMD officers present and then called FSMD Treasurer (and John Howland Colony gover- nor) Hank Dressel to the podium to present him with the new lapel pin which GSMD has commissioned for those who have received Governor General Com- mendation awards.

Governor Carter then asked GSMD Assistant Gover- nor General Dr. George P. Garmany Jr. to help pre- sent a Governor General’s certificate of commenda- tion and lapel pin which had been awarded at the GSMD GBoA meeting on 12 Sep 2015 in Ledyard, CT, to Chilton Colony member Richard S. Wheeler “[f]or service to the Florida Society of Mayflower Descendants Revising its By-Laws and Standing Rules and serving as Editor of its newsletter ‘The Pilgrim’.” FSMD Historian Muriel Curtis Cushing then conduct-

FSMD Governor Kenneth E. Carter, FSMD Counsellor (and Pilgrim editor) Richard S. Wheeler, and GSMD Assistant Governor General Dr. George P. Garmany Jr. ed the Ancestors’ Roll Call, during which the members present rose when the name of their Mayflower passenger was read.

Governor Ken Carter then introduced our guest speaker, the second highest ranking officer of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants — Assistant Governor General George P. Garmany Jr., MD, of Boulder, Colorado. Before being elected Assistant Governor General at the 40th Triennial Congress in September 2014, Dr. Garmany served four terms (2002-2014) as Surgeon General. He also served as Chair of the Reproductive Technology Committee and as Chair of the Cole’s Hill Anthropological Pro- ject (CHAP), in which role he works closely with experts from the Smithsonian. He has twice been a member of the Constitution and Bylaws Committee. He joined the Colorado Society in 1994 and has served as Captain, Surgeon, Treasurer, Governor, AG, DGG and as Chair of Juniors Membership. He is retired from the practice of neurology in Boulder. A 12th generation descendant from Richard Warren, George and his wife, Beverly, both share a deep love for American History, Beverly belongs to her local chapter of the DAR and George was recently inducted into the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Connecticut.

The Florida Pilgrim - Winter 2015 page 10

Dr. Garmany’s presentation at the Mayflower Banquet was “New England Captivities: Terrorism at the Turn of the 18th Century,” focusing on the warring Indian tribes’ practice during the period 1675 to 1763 of attacking white settle- ments in the area between Cape Cod Bay to the east and the Connectiicut River Valley to the west and carrying off mainly women and children as captives. After 50 years (1620-1675) of rela- tive calm and peaceful relations between the newly arrived white settlers and the Native Americans, the next 100 years was a period of almost constant tension and war between the two groups, including:

King Phillip’s War 1675-1676 First Intercolonial (or King William’s) War 1688 -1697 Second Intercolonial (Queen Anne’s) War 1702- 1713 Three Years War 1722-1725 Third Intercolonial (King George’s) War 1744- 1748 Fourth Intercolonial (or Seven Years a/k/a The Last French & Indian) War 1755/6– 1763

Dr. George P. Garmany, Jr.

[Editor’s Note: One of the most famous examples of the terrorism of which Dr. Garmany spoke was the 1704 French and Indian raid on the Connecticut River Valley settlement of Deerfield, MA. Go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Raid_on_Deerfield for a complete account of this incident, including the fate of the 112 settlers who were taken captive and marched to Canada, only 60 of whom were later redeemed and returned to New England.]

Chilton Colony member Steven Carter, who lives in CT and is a descendant of Isaac Allerton, Richard Warren and Stephen Hopkins and is the son of FSMD Governor Ken Carter, gave a brief talk (illustrated with slides) about The Pilgrim John How- land Society and the Shal- lop Elizabeth Tilley which it Steven Carter maintains in the waters of Plymouth Harbour. He also reported on his at- tendance in his father’s place at the weekend meeting in Octo- ber in Plymouth of the charter donors to The Governor Gen- eral’s 1620 Club. [Editor’s Note: At the All-Congress Banquet during the 2014 General Congress, incoming Governor Gen- eral Lea Sinclair Filson donated $1,620 to GSMD and an- nounced the creation of the Governor General's 1620 Club. The Florida Society is one of the founding donors who joined Lea in donating $1,620 to GSMD. At the first meeting of the incoming Executive Committee, the officers voted for these funds to go toward the important work of our GSMD Silver Books series, for verifying, and digitization. These endeavors are an investment in our future and help to make sure the sto- ry of the Mayflower passengers will not be forgotten. ] Shallop Elizabeth Tilley

FSMD Captain Helen Bennett read The Mayflower Compact and Chilton Colony governor Marcia Dalkalitsis presided at the drawing of the winning door prize raffle tickets. Lovely and substantial gift baskets were won by Trifon Dalkalitsis, Marcia’s husband, Gail Dressel, FSMD Treasurer Hank Dressel’s wife, and Cooke Colony member Louise Rumnock, former Flor- ida Pilgrim editor (2003- 2009).

The banquet concluded with FSMD Elder Suszanne Adams offering the benediction.

The following morning, Satur- day 21 Nov 2015, your gov- erning body, the FSMD Board of Assistants (“BoA”), met at 8am to conduct its regular Fall business.

The meeting was called to order by FSMD Governor Ken Carter and the Roll was called by FSMD Secretary Jessie Brabham. Present were: all 8 state officers, the DGG, the AG, the immediate past governor, two of the three BoA members-at-large L to R: FSMD Governor Ken Carter, FSMD Historian and DGG Muriel Cushing, and Chilton Colony member and the colony governors (or Steven Carter, all in period attire prior to The Mayflower Banquet on Friday 20 Nov 2015. their representatives) from 11 of FSMD’s 16 colonies. Secre- tary Brabham declared the presence of a quorum. Under FSMD’s Constitution & Bylaws, one-third of the members of the State BoA constitute a quorum. There are 30 members of the BoA (i.e., 8 state officers, 3 members-at-large, DGG, AG, immediate past state governor, and 16 colony governors), but six BoA members have dual roles (Hank Dressel, Muriel Cushing, Ren Cush- ing, Ron Dailey, Alvene Watson and Laura Brock) so there are only 24 persons on the BoA. A quorum, therefore, is 8 members present.

L to R: FSMD Secretary Jessie Brabham, Deputy Governor Jim Preston and Governor Ken Carter Pilgrim hat The Florida Pilgrim - Winter 2015 page 12

A motion was made, seconded and unanimously carried to dispense with the reading of the BoA Minutes from 25 Apr 2015, as they had been circu- lated by Secretary Brabham to all BoA members months ago. A motion was then made, seconded and unanimously carried to approve those Minutes as so distributed, with any corrections as filed with the Secretary.

Officers’ and committee chairs’ reports were de- ferred to the annual membership meeting to follow.

Colony reports were limited to a report of each colo- ny’s delinquent members (i.e., members who had not yet paid their 2015 dues), such members to be dropped by the Secretary from the Active Member- ship Roll. It’s necessary for the BoA to take such action each Fall so that those delinquent members do not appear on FSMD’s year-end membership re- port to Plymouth, and so that FSMD is not charged the per capita assessment by GSMD for members from whom no dues have been received. A total of L t R: FSMD Governor Ken Carter, GSMD Assistant Governor General 38 members were reported as being delinquent, with Dr. George P. Garmany Jr., and GSMD Captain General (and immediate past Warren Colony leading the way with 12 followed by FSMD Governor) Reynolds P. Cushing Allerton (9), Howland (6), Doty (4), Chilton (3), Fuller

(2) and Bradford amd Winslow (1 each). Eight colonies (Alden, Brewster, Cooke, Hopkins, Mullins, Samson, Stamdish and Tiiley) reported no drops.

A motion was made, seconded and unanimously carried to approve the site and dates for the 2016 annual meeting: 18-19 Nov 2016 in Fort Myers hosted by the Henry Samson Colony. Samson Colony governor Ellen Full reported that she had made arrangements with two adjacent hotels, a Holiday Inn and a Homewood Suites. Gov- ernor Carter commented that the choice was entirely up to the host colony and that he strongly recommended that one of the two be chosen, preferably the one which has the facilities in which the banquet and business meetings would be held. More details will be published In the Spring issue of The Florida Pilgrim next May.

FSMD Treasurer Hank Dressel presented his financial report for the past year and his proposed budget for the coming year, which with three modifications was unanimously approved. The three modifi- cations are three donations of $1,000 each to be made by FSMD to The Pilgrim John Howland Society for maintenance and upkeep of The Shallop Elizabeth Tilley, to the First Parish Meetinghouse in Plymouth for repairs and renovations, and to the Mayflower II for maintenance and upkeep. Dressel had included in his proposed budget a $1,620 donation by FSMD to The Governor General’s 1620 Club, but not the three additional donations described above. As adjusted, next year’s budget projects that expenses will exceed revenues by $5,000 with that excess reducing the substan- tial amount of undesignated funds which FSMD has on hand. The 78th annual meeting of the members of FSMD was called to order at 9am by Governor Carter and FSMD Elder Suzanne Adams offered the invocation. The Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag and Salute to the Mayflower Flag were led by FSMD Captain Helen Bennett. Secretary Brabham reported that more than 20 members in good standing were present and, therefore, a quorum was present. FSMD Elder Suzanne Adams, assisted by the host colony’s governor Marcia Dalkalitsis, conducted a solemn memorial service for the 27 FSMD members who had passed away since last year’s annual meeting. See page 3 above.

The Florida Pilgrim - Winter 2015 page 13

DGG Muriel Cushing gave a report on her attendance at the GSMD General Board of Assistants meeting held in mid- September at the Foxwoods Resort in Ledyard, CT. Minutes of that meeting are available on request from Secretary Brabham or your editor and are also published in the December issue of The Mayflower Quarterly.

FSMD’s eight officers gave their reports, as did the chairs of FSMD’s standing committees (i.e., Bylaws, Education, Endowment, Finance, Junior Members, Newsletter, and Scholarship) FSMD Historian Muriel Cushing reported that we have 88 new members since last year’s annual meeting, 14 supplementals and 22 transfers in from other state Mayflower socie- ties. Secretary Brabham reports that FSMD has 1,332 members on its Active Membership Roll as of the date of the 2015 annual meeting; when the 38 drops are reported to Plymouth at the end of November, FSMD will have 1,292 active members in good standing.

Under new business, the proposed amendments to FSMD’s Bylaws & Standing Rules were explained by Bylaws Chair (and FSMD Deputy Gover- nor) Jim Preston. Each was approved by unanimous voice vote of the FSMD members present.

Motions were made, seconded and unanimously approved that FSMD do- nate $1,000 to The Shallop Elizabeth Tilley, $1,620 to The Governor General’s 1620 Club, $1,000 to the renovation of the First Psrish Meet- inghouse in Plymouth, amd $1,000 to the Mayflower II.

A proposal by Standish Colony vice governor Nancy Ratner regarding jun- ior member dues was ruled out of order by Governor Carter upon advice of FSMD Counsellor and Parliamentarian Richard Wheeler. This proposal would necessitate an amendment to FSMD Bylaws (Article VIII Section 1.a) which exempts junior members from the payment of dues. This pro- posal was not submitted to the State BoA at its Spring 2015 meeting for Dr. George P. Garmany Jr. recommendation to the general members nor was it included in the notice to members in The Florida Pilgrim of proposed bylaw and standing rules amendments. Nancy Ratner, who was present, was advised that she could submit her proposal to the Spring 2016 meeting of the State BoA for its consideration and action.

A motion by FSMD Deputy Governor (and former Junior Member Chair) Jim Preston that FSMD adopt a “Junior friends of the Mayflower Society” program similar to that in place in the Arizona Mayflower Society was seconded and vigorously debated. On a show of hands, the motion was defeated.

Governor Carter called on GSMD Assistant Governor General Dr. George P. Garmany Jr. to make a report on the status of the Cole’s Hill Anthropological Project: he’s been working with the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation on the repair of the Sarcophagus monument in the hopes that we can build working relationships with them and the Commonwealth that way. DCR is the agency that administers the land where the Cole’s Hill Sarcophagus is placed, and they will be the group that will work with us when we do retrieve the bones for study. Recently DCR requested that we write up a letter of intent with a project description to the Secretary of the Commonwealth. That is the office that supervises the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the State Archaeologist. This will be our next hurdle, and it remains to be seen how agreeable they will be to our project. Once they respond to that letter, we will know much more about whether we are likely to get permission to proceed with the anthropology project.

FSMD Captain Helen Bennett read The Mayflower Compact and FSMD Deputy Governor read the courtesy resolution to be in- corporated into the minutes of the meeting, thanking Chilton Colony for its efforts as host. Governor Carter announced the dates (18-19 Nov 2016) and location (Fort Myers) for next year’s annual meeting. FSMD Elder Suzanne Adams offered the benediction and the meeting was adjourned. FSMD Deputy Governor Jim Preston presents Chilton Colony gover- nor Marcia Dalkalitsis with the courtesy resolution thanking her colony for its excellent work in hosting the 2015 annual meeting The Florida Pilgrim - Winter 2015 page 14

The officers and Board of Assistants of the Florida Society extend a heartfelt wish that all members and their families enjoy a blessed Christmas season. Please remember to give thanks for our Pilgrim ancestors and the sacrifices they made and obstacles they overcame for our benefit.
