His is the first known collection of Native American photographs. The photos will be reproduced from the original glass plates by the National History Museum in Los Angeles, where they are preserved at the Seaver Center. " ~ Will was born August 28, 1836, in Turner, Maine, .ana rai ~ed · on a farm. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, he enlisted in the~ 13th, Massac'h Jsetts Infantry~ After being wounded at Antietam, he served out th'e wa ~ in the I nvalid Coq~:s. About 1865, he set up a photography studio in Chambers~urg, Rennsylvarii<;~. , In J-867, jlfter a fire destroyed his business, he moved '- west.and ~worked a~ . a. cl~rk . in the ~utler's store at Fort Dodge, Kansas. A year later he moved on to Camp Supply·and thE:m to Fort Sill in Indian Territory, where he took ~he photos. · ·. ~ ~ Later in his life, Will lived in Phi ladelphia .·and Vermont before settling in Boston in 1882.
