PRESIDENT’S REPORT

This is now my second year as President and, after finding my feet in the first year, I saw it important this year to make the Club an enjoyable and financially stable club environment that enabled all members to enjoy baseball both on the field and off the field. It is worthy of noting that the Waverley Board is usually comprised of nine members, however this year very few nominations were received for positions on the Board and so these members took on and fulfilled all roles on the Board and I commend them for their efforts as the year has been extremely challenging due to this. Lack of nominations for Board positions has meant that work that was previously done by many was done by few and in no way can this continue. The Club is in danger of not having anyone available to fulfill the very important role that the Board of any club has.

Waverley Baseball Club has a great junior program. That depth was highlighted this year as many of the juniors that have come through the Club’s junior program stepped up and kept our Division 1 club alive. It is a pleasure to see the depth of talent coming through the junior ranks each and every year, and to see these players every week develop and go on to represent baseball at many different levels.

Congratulations must go to our Women’s Division 2 program, who won their Premiership this year, and a huge round of thanks to Sue Montalto, Michael Busch, Steve Culbert and Sue Kennedy, the Club Board members, who worked incredibly hard throughout the season to guide and develop the Club.

We have been fortunate to have had some valuable volunteers and sponsors around the Club who work diligently each week assisting in many areas as needed which has kept the club functioning. We have also built a very positive relationship with the Monash City Council, who approved and supported us financially in our application to redo our backnet on Diamond 1. I would also like to take time to acknowledge all players and spectators throughout the Club for the positive attitudes that are reflected in their enjoyment of the game each week and for promoting our great game of baseball at all skill levels.

In going forward into the next year it is very clear that all club members need to work together to ensure that Waverley remains the successful club that it is, but this cannot and will not be achieved without more support from members to all facets of the Club, not just playing each week. Leaving the job of running the administration of this Club to a small number of committed members is not sustainable in the long run.

PHIL DALE PRESIDENT

ADMINISTRATION REPORT

It has certainly been a steep learning curve going from a parent helper, who has scored, organised a club Christmas party, helped in the canteen & barbecue duty, even previously coaching to Secretary of the Waverley Baseball Club. I was amazed at all the work and organisation that goes into a club from behind the scenes. The amount of paperwork that has to be completed for the Council and Baseball Victoria, meetings you have to attend, people you have to answer or get answers from, and that’s even before you start doing internal lists and spreadsheets, registration forms, notices, meetings etc for the Club.

I knew before I started I had big shoes to fill, knowing I was following our legendary secretary Robyn Karlsen, who had filled this position for the twelve years prior & who knows the Club and baseball like the back of her hand. I honestly don’t think I would have gotten through the year if it wasn’t for Robyn’s guidance and help throughout the year; and for this Robyn I can’t thank you enough. I would also like to thank Chris Peacock for not only staying on as Treasure for the first part of the season, but also for his valuable advice and help.

This year with only five board members it has been a struggle keeping up with the huge work load for all of us involved, many of us have had to wear many hats, multi-tasking would be an understatement. But it had to be done to make sure the Club still functioned as usual so all the players got to play the game they love. So well done to the entire board.

Volunteers for boards & committees are becoming harder and harder to get as families are busier and people seem to be lot more time poor these days. We are definitely not alone here, however we urgently need to look at alternative ways of building up the Board & Junior Committee so people can share the load and not get burnt out by being overloaded. Each division from Under 8s all the way through to Division 1 Firsts, including the Women’s teams and Masters Teams should have a representative or even a few that can alternate responsibilities and be part of the Board. This way there is a spokesperson for each level, everyone gets heard and can be part of the decision making and therefore fully understand the reasoning behind decisions made. With more hands on deck we can follow through with some of the great new ideas that we have been discussing to benefit the club, like internal clinics, Club trips overseas, preseason clinics and more Come & Try Days. Many hands make light work and to get a few more committed people to roll up their sleeves and see a project through would be fantastic. We need new faces as well as keeping our knowledgeable and regular die hard Waverley members so the mix is well balanced.

As you are aware we had a very successful year for the Waverley Baseball Club, the Women’s, Masters and Junior teams had a fabulous year all round. We also had quite a number of individual players that were rewarded on their skill and dedication to the game, making various Representative teams, State Teams and even drafted overseas. Congratulations to all of you. You should be mighty proud of yourselves as the Waverley baseball Club is extremely proud of each and every one of you. Please see team reports for specific details.

A huge thanks goes out to all the Coaches, Assistant Coaches and Coordinators throughout the Club, whether you were a first timer or you have been coaching for the past 15 plus years. Without you volunteering your time, your dedication and passion for the game we would not be able to run such a successful competition for all of our players. You are a big part of why Waverley Baseball Club continues to grow stronger as a club, so thank you all very much for your time and efforts throughout the season.

A big thank you to the parents and families whom do not only watch and support their children each week, who in turn help setting out diamonds and packing them up again, barbecue & canteen duties, team managers, fundraisers, scorers, supporters, taxi drivers and so on. Kids enjoy being supported and even more so when it comes from home.

The only fundraising was the Cadbury Drive, which this year we decided on Natural Confectionary lollies, Snakes etc. They weren’t as well received as previous years with the chocolates, feedback was cost per item made it harder to sell them. The ‘opt out’ option was well received by most people; so a huge thank you for all who contributed and either sold their snakes or paid the opt out fee.

The Monash City Council plays a big part in our operation and this year they have been great. Getting onto all the maintenance issues we have from time to time and getting them sorted out for us. The Club would like to thank Angelique & her Recreation Team for all their support and efforts. The new shade sail in front of Diamond 2 was one of Angelique’s projects and it looks great as well as been a great place to get out of the direct sun, so thank you very much and we look forward to continuing to work together in future years.

Our new Diamond 1 back net was completed April of this year, and is another project the Council and Waverley Baseball Club worked together on to improve our facilities. Thanks again for your joint assistance and input into the project. We are delighted with the end results and the positive feedback has been overwhelming from members of the Club and visiting clubs alike.

Last but certainly not least I’d like to sincerely thank Mike Busch and Steve Culbert for all their assistance and friendship throughout the year. These guys are unbelievable and nothing was ever too much trouble. They rolled their sleeves up week after week always making sure everything and everyone was on the right track and ready to go. Both of you were my rocks throughout the entire year, and it was very rewarding knowing we all had each other’s backs and would step up and help one another out at any time. If I was picking a team for anything you guys would both be my first pick. Thank you so much.

SUE MONTALTO SECRETARY

JUNIORS DIRECTOR’S REPORT

This year has been a very good one for the junior program at Waverley Baseball Club. Including domestic leagues, summer representative leagues and winter league Waverley Baseball Club field 37 junior teams this year. Our representative players and teams excelled while our domestic leagues attracted new-to-baseball participants at every level from tee ball to Under 15s.

Second only to Tradition, parent volunteers are Waverley’s most valuable asset. The typical summer weekend requires approximately 70 coaches, 35 team managers, at least a dozen umpires, 15 grounds crew, six canteen volunteers and four barbecue chefs. Our domestic program alone includes four leagues comprised of thirty teams. Without this army of engaged supporters there would be very little baseball played at Napier Park.

As mentioned above our representative teams excelled this past season. They compiled a combined record of 73-13-2. Three teams finished the regular season undefeated and another three finished with only one loss. Other highlights include:

• Seven of the eight teams scored over 100 runs • Waverley representative teams outscored their competition 1118 to 426 • Seven of the eight teams made it to their division finals • Seven of seven finals teams made it to their division grand final • The Under 12 Panthers, Under 12 Wildcats, Under 14 Wildcats and Under 18 Wildcats won premierships

Our representative players achieved on an individual level as well. Fifteen players were selected to regional Little League teams resulting in Waverley players placed on four of the five metro teams. Waverley players were on both metro teams to compete in the National Championships including the Yarra Rangers who came home with the bronze.

Twenty-five Waverley juniors were selected to Victorian State squads. Put another way one in five state players from Under 14s to Under 18s is from Waverley. And five players from Waverley’s junior program have been invited to participate in this year’s MLB Australian Baseball Academy.

Focused on the importance of junior parents, there was renewed emphasis on the social aspects of Waverley juniors. This was accomplished in part through borrowing Friday night festivities of the past. Each Friday night a featured game is played on the main diamond with presentations and meals immediately following. Melissa O’Connor headed up this project and thanks to her creative menus and the hard work of her team 60 to 80 meals were served each week.

Our Christmas Party chairwoman Isabelle Martin is also to be recognised for her incredible efforts with this year’s event. Based on meals served at least 200 adults were in attendance. The kids enjoyed the bungee run, dunk tank, slip-n-slide and visit from Santa. Meanwhile the parents’ whiffle ball tournament was a huge success.

Through the initiative of Bede Karlsen followed by the work of David Thomas and Andrew Weller, our “Waverley Little League Academy” continued throughout the season this year. This program provides a weekly practice session for all Under 12s but aimed primarily at those only participating in the domestic league. We have seen marked improvement in skills of those participating and the sessions continue to attract around 20 players each week.

In addition to our programs Waverley Baseball Club played host to other junior events: the state league grand finals for all age groups; the Under 14 boys state selections and training; Under 15 girls state selections and training; Yarra Rangers Little League selections and training; and the 2013 IAB Friendship Series.

It was an action-packed and work filled year only made possible through the incredible efforts of a dedicated Juniors Committee: • Stephanie Evans, Assistant Director • Brad Orwin, Representative Program Coordinator • Rob Smart, Under 15/Friday Night League Coordinator • Bede Karlsen, Under 12 League Coordinator • David Thomas, Under 10/Rookie Ball League Coordinator • Cassandra Bassett, Under 8/Tee Ball League Coordinator • Melissa O’Connor, Friday Night Social Chair • Isabelle Martin, Christmas Party Chair A heartfelt thanks to each of them.

We do have challenges ahead of us. Chief among them is recruitment of players into our Under 8s and Under 10s. Changes in the demographic of our area, how schools charge for advertising and how Baseball Victoria approached development all contribute to our need to modify our approach. We are presently seeking club members and parents with ideas and energy to help Waverley Baseball Club rejuvenate its promotion and recruitment activities.

Another primary challenge is the continual need for volunteers to operate a juniors program as large as ours. Coaches, coordinators, umpires and everything in between is needed. Please get involved.

STEVE CULBERT JUNIORS DIRECTOR

TREASURER’S REPORT 31 st March 2013

This is my first report as Treasurer of the Waverley Baseball Club and I am pleased to present to the members an audited report for the 2012/2013 year. This report has been prepared by Eugene Ferraro from More Than Tax Pty Ltd who was appointed by the Board by minute to prepare the reports for the 2012/2013 year.

On a positive note as can obviously be seen the Club was able to secure funding for the back net. Waverley Baseball Club was required to submit half of the funding for this net, with Monash City Council submitting the other half. Knowing that this capital expenditure was required this year, the Board was extremely conservative in all areas of spending and wherever possible endeavoured to keep costs as low as possible.

The Winter club, after recording a deficit the previous year, also achieved a great result recording a profit this financial year. With due diligence in reducing expenditure it pleasingly posted a profit of $5,289. This reflects cost savings implemented by the Winter members pulling together implementing fundraising and voluntarily doing tasks previously paid for, which is a credit to them.

With spiralling expenses and the pressure on clubs to keep costs at a minimum there is no doubt that members do need to recognise the need to participate in running the Club. It cannot all be paid for and volunteer time to fulfil roles within the Club is desperately needed. Nothing was clearer this year when the Board in response to spiralling costs of running a Sunday morning canteen had to rely on volunteer parents, and in the absence of that offer, closed the canteen. Response to organising a fundraiser and general fundraising efforts has been lacklustre over the past few years, which has seen a valuable source of revenue to the Club evaporate, and this has put pressure on the Clubs income sources. More needs to be done in this area and any parties interested in organising functions would be welcomed.

The Summer club recorded a small profit of $4,919 for the season after the injection of $8,228 from the Reds fundraising account. This did again reflect conservative spending throughout the season, with the knowledge that there would be capital expenditure in ground upgrades. As stated last year our fees are in the upper end compared to other clubs, but members do need to recognise that Club fees are vital to ensure the operation of the Club continues, and it is not satisfactory to play every week and not ensure that your fees are paid. It is an expectation that player fees are paid on time and it is not the responsibility of the Board or Coaching staff to continually have to chase recalcitrant payers throughout the year. It is each and every member’s responsibility to ensure that they pay all fees due in a timely manner. It is their responsibility to their Club.

Our bar and canteen as in previous years continue to provide the only cash flow into the Club and after putting $8,288 into Waverley Baseball Club Inc, a profit of $9,642 was accumulated. Fortunately we were able to keep costs low and it also reflects the efforts of the Junior section of the Club who were running very successful days, particularly on a Friday. Closing the canteen in the Junior rooms and running it all from the Senior club rooms has also assisted in keeping stock levels lower with only one canteen needing to be maintained with stock each week. What was implemented successfully this year was weekly reporting to the Board of the takings each week from the Bar and Canteen so that a close eye could be kept on things to ensure that this area was continuing to operate profitably.

Finally I would like to thank Chris Peacock for his assistance at the start of the season, as I was unable to fully commit to the Treasurer position due to family reasons. I did not nominate as Treasurer for the 2013 season as I knew that my time commitments to fully fill this position would always be limited, but in the absence of anyone else within the club stepping forward to assist, I was happy to undertake the role as best I could. In going forward I wish to advise that Eugene Ferraro from More Than Tax Pty Ltd is happy to prepare the reports for the 2014 season, and I wish everyone at Waverley continued success.

WAVERLEY WINTER BASEBALL 2012

SENIORS

In the 2012 Season we had three senior teams: B, B Reserve and E-L grades. Chipper Maurer was our head coach again with assistance from Ian Geduld and Donavon Hendricks. Michael Geduld managed the B Reserve team and Grant Poke the EL team.

Our B Grade team finished third at the end of the season but had a shock loss to Ringwood 4-3 in the first Semi Final. The B Reserve side battled away all season with a very young side, finishing ninth for the season. It must be said the experience gained by these boys will put us in a great position for next season. EL grade had a fantastic result winning the Grand Final 10 – 5 over GMBC. The team dominated the season losing only one game and also took out the EL grade MVP with Chris Powell.

Congratulations and thank you to all the coaches and scorers on another successful and enjoyable season, without you we don't play! Thanks to all members who contributed to our best social season to date. We had some fantastic nights, the highlight being the Op Shop dress up for Presentation Night. It was a major focus of the board to improve our position financially and ensure ongoing success.

Our award winners were: The Blackcats Winter Champion and winner of the Geoff Paice Perpetual Trophy was Daniel Page B Grade Best Finals Player – Donavon Hendricks B Reserve Best Team Man – Matthew Orwin & Stuart Scranton E Grade Best Team Man – Ryann Baxter E Grade Best Finals Player – Ryann Baxter Club Most Improved – Manning Davison Best Clubman – Stephanie Evans

Finally a special thanks to all those who helped out on a regular basis with special mention to Tony Page, Dean Johnson-Boe, Craig Reval, Geoff Paice, Sue Aslett, Stephanie Evans and Steve Wright. A huge thank you to Denise Page, Marie Reval and their helpers for our Thursday night and home game dinners.

BRAD ORWIN WINTER COORDINATOR

JUNIORS

The junior season started off with Waverley fielding three junior teams; two Under 13s and one Under 15. The coaches were Paul Tobin-Underwood for the Under 13 Minors, Neil Burke for the Under 13 Majors and Michael Busch for the Under 15s. We were not successful in finding enough Under 17 players to field a team so three players were placed on permit to other clubs and three joined the senior program. We had a very successful season with all three of our junior teams reaching finals.

The Under 15s were knocked out in the semi-finals by Ringwood, the eventual winner of the Under 15 league. The Waverley Under 13 Minors won the Grand Final by beating Heathmont and the Waverley Under 13 Majors won their Grand Final against Forest Hill, in a very exciting game, with only 1 run deciding the game.

Under 13 Minors Premiers 2012

I would like to thank all coaches, team managers, scorers, parents who umpired and set up grounds each week. Without all your time and dedication our season wouldn’t have been as successful.

SENIOR REPORTS

DIVISION 1 FIRSTS

With what could be explained as the definite end to a dominant era at the Club, the 2012/2013 Season for the Division 1 Firsts was going to be an intriguing one for all at the Club.

With such a young group of guys who have cut their teeth over the last few years in our Division 2 teams, no one could really know how we were going to go up against the more experienced teams in Division 1 week in week out. Needless to say, this is not a foreign situation to previous Waverley teams, but still a real important time for the Club.

With this in mind, some very simple goals were made for the team to keep developing while ensuring that was balanced with competing and maintaining our place within the Division 1 competition. The message was simple to the players ‘Win the winnables and compete hard with the teams above us’.

What resulted was something quite different after the 33 games. We were able to beat teams above us with some outstanding performances against teams who have been somewhat powerhouses over recent times. On the other hand when it came to winning the winnables we had some lapses that kept the guys well grounded and reminded us that there is a great need to be consistent to be at the top of Division 1.

Saying all that, the team finished the regular season with a sixth place on the ladder (13 wins, 15 losses and 3 draws). Some great results seeing us well and truly out of the relegation zone but an indicative sign that there is plenty to be done in the years to come.

The Club’s MVP was shared by the two sides of our team. Wade McConnon was rewarded for some excellent and consistent years at Waverley showing the leadership with this group while Jon Kennedy as part of the young brigade showed some great poise and consistency through the year to deserve the shared award.

Led by Daniel Page (Club’s Most Improved) on the mound, there were many examples of players showing great improvement through the year. Ben Aslett was superb in the infield, Andrew Hayes is showing signs of being a true leader behind the plate and Tyler Dale who struggled with an arm injury in the year had some terrific outings for the Club on the back end of the season.

Our leadership from older players such as JJ O’Connor, Mitch Hayes and Matty Wilson complimented our younger guys but also assisted in the development of Tommy Maxfield, Ryan Dale and in the later part of the year Matt Homfray to fit into the team.

With some great performances and development this year the Club is in good stead for years to come to be successful at all levels. Although the Division 1 Firsts are the flagship of the Club on the field, it should not be forgotten the efforts of all of the teams, coaches, volunteers, supporters and administrators within the Club. The whole club should be united in maintaining the strong position we find ourselves in.

A big appreciation to all the senior coaches, supporters and volunteers who give their time to the Club week in week out allowing the people to play and represent the Waverley Wildcats.

PHIL DALE, DAVID CLARKSON & KERRY GASSNER CLUB COACHES

DIVISION 1 SECONDS

With a number of key players leaving the seniors it was a whole new look for the Reserves team this year with a number of juniors getting their opportunity. There were a number of players who took up this challenge and also found themselves getting an opportunity in the firsts throughout the year which was fantastic for the future of the club.

As a result the results this year were mixed with us finishing with 8 wins, 8 losses and 3 draws leaving us in equal seventh position. It was unfortunate that we lost four of these games by one run, which with more experience will definitely turn around. Special mention must go to Tyler Dale (working his way back from rehab), Matt Orwin and Matt Aslett who shouldered the pitching duties and did a fantastic job for us.

Congratulations also go to our award winners in Tom Maxfield (MVP) whose hitting and defense in all positions was outstanding leading to him winning his deserved spot back in the ones, and Adam Nicks (the Fos) who brought great leadership, experience and enthusiasm to the team.

Thank you to Brad Orwin who was co-coach until he had knee surgery; David Clarkson, Phil Dale and Kerry Gassner for their support and guidance throughout the year and on game day; Robyn Karlsen for scoring; and all the players for such an enjoyable year.

TONY PAGE DIVISION 1 RESERVES COACH

DIVISION 1 THIRDS

The overall result for the season was disappointing due to missing out on the finals by half a game. We had 11 wins 8 loses 1 draw. Two of the lost games hurt, which was against Preston and Sunshine both teams in the bottom three.

Our problem was our pitching depth, which is a common problem with most teams. Manning Davison was our main starter and for a 17 year old did an admirable job, sometimes pitching a full game due to not having backup. Six of our players were under 17 years old and we played them in key positions in the field and they held their own in the batting line up also. In the pitching area we needed a Matt Aslett or Matt Orwin who would have complimented Manning. Josh Lean and Sam Hunter were outstanding for us this year with the bat and in the field. Josh hitting 320 and Sam 347. The team was a blend of old and young and we all got on well on and off the field.

Geoff Paice was great with our young infield he played first base all season and controlled the team from there. I took over Team Manager duties and Paice looked after the on field coaching. It worked well.

It is a big commitment for the parents of the junior players with two games on the one day, our group of parents did a great job.

The main focus of the season for our team was the young players gaining experience at the senior level. The finals would have been a bonus. The aim for Waverley is to keep these young players at the Club to pursue their senior career and I think we helped with that this season.

DEAN JOHNSON-BOE DIVISION 1 THIRDS COACH

DIVISION 1 FOURTHS

I would like to thank the Committee of the Waverley Baseball Club for another opportunity to coach again in season 2012/2013

The 2012/2013 Division 1 Fourths had a mix of players from the Division 2 Thirds and Division 1 Fourths from the previous season, giving us a broad range of experiences and skill base. We also successfully recruited a number of new players to WBC who were playing baseball for the first time.

We finished with a 9 Win, 9 Loss and 1 Draw record and missed out on finals by one game. Our major challenge was consistency and the inability to close out a game. We often remained competitive for the first hour and a half and gave it away in the final innings.

Chris Powell won the MVP award for his outstanding season with the bat and very solid fielding throughout the year - as well as the odd stint on the mound.

Joshua Puyk won the coaches award in his first senior year, with a batting average in the 600’s and solid performance at first base.

I would like to thank Kerry Gassner and the selection committee for successfully fielding teams which is often a challenge that goes unnoticed. Thank you to Grant and Jenny Poke for supporting me with some of the management responsibilities for our team and ensuring we had the right people in the right place with the right tools. Cheers.

A big thank you to my wife Kathy for scoring most of our games this season.

Finally I would like to thank the players in the Division 1 Fourths for making WBC a truly great place to be and putting the fun back into baseball. I had a great time.

TIM PUYK DIVISION 1 FOURTHS COACH

DIVISION 4

Season 2012/2013 saw the Redwiners go around for the third season. On a high from the success from the previous season that saw us secure seven wins and a draw we looked forward to finally picking up some silverware but alas it was not to be due to a variety of reasons.

This season saw 21 players go around for the Redwiners with many highlights. In particular we saw Project GK finally happen, with Bede and Grant Karlsen playing together and Daniel being bat boy for the game. Heath Wright playing seniors and having the unsettling situation of his dad Steve being the main umpire. Thankfully he was not ejected by Steve. Bruce Webb made his comeback from a serious leg injury and the rest of us battled along with the normal niggles. And making the finals for the second year running.

Again we are eternally grateful two special people, our scorer and umpire that have stuck with us from the outset Erin and Steve. We saw just how valuable Steve is as an umpire when a few things occurred with the scorer fortunately Steve’s experience managed the situations like the professional that he is and Erin finished off the season. We also wish to thank the board for their support and more specifically Sue Montalto who was terrific as secretary of the club.

Once again we made the finals and Groundhog Day again, we lost against a loaded up side. Nevertheless we had a great season with eight wins and one draw and got through the season with no major illnesses or injuries. As mentioned in previous reports we are just a bunch of baseball dads going out and having fun or letting off steam every Sunday afternoon. To our family and friends we are eternally grateful for being allowed to play, the support we receive and making lifelong friends in the process. Hopefully we will all be around to have another crack at the silverware next season.

ROBERT SMART DIVISION 5 COACH

WAVERLEY MASTERS DIVISION 1

The old guys were at it again this year but it was unfortunate we were only able to muster one Masters Team this year. A lot of the regulars were back again for a bit more punishment but it was fantastic to pick up three new recruits to help strengthen the team after some injuries forced regulars in Brad Orwin and Claudio Rodriguez to the sidelines.

Thank you and congratulations to John Makeham (Mako) for stepping up and taking on the catching duties and also winning the Grand Master award, Troy O'Connor who brought some younger legs, some range (which is rare in Masters) and hitting strength to the lineup, and the Rookie of the Masters Steve Culbert whose efforts and improvement throughout the year was vital.

Our record was again good enough to get us to finals and get over the top of our friendly rivals at Blackburn to see us play off in our first Division 1 Masters Grand Final against Geelong. They were the benchmark all year and although we beat them leading into the finals we did fall a little short losing 6-5 in a great tussle. We had our chances late in the game but couldn't quite pull it off.

Thank you to Matt Sheldon-Collins for his support, Craig Reval for all his managerial skills (ie Bar and fees), Marie Reval for scoring and dinners once again and Denise Page for arranging the best dinners on the Masters circuit.

See you all next year guys.

TONY PAGE TEAM MANAGER

WOMEN’S DIVISION 1

The Waverley Women's teams are continuing to be a successful program at Waverley, achieving great results and strengthening with each season. Congratulations to our victorious Division 3 team who won the Grand Final.

This season saw a new fixture for the women’s program, with Divisions 1 and 2 combining for the first part of the season and then the top four teams after the home and away games, breaking away and playing off in the Division 1 finals.

What an achievement to make the top four teams in the State by most of our old gals. I am truly proud of how far our women’s program has progressed and gaining recognition from other clubs too. Once again our team had eight definite players on Saturdays with our fill ins (Coxy, Skip, Deb, Shelli , Mez) helping to provide us a team each week.

Two highlights come to mind for the season: 1) Our firsts making the Division 1 finals; and 2) Casey Sheldon Collins, our youngest Wildcat, made her first State team this year and topping off a good tournament, she was announced in the Australian Squad. We are all truly proud of Casey’s achievements. Her skills have developed even further this season with her cementing her position as a catcher/utility and consistent hitter. She is one to watch in the future.

This season saw some new and valuable recruits join us at Napier Park. Two past State players in Sophie Binks and Shelli Marklew proved to be a force in the outfield and on the bat.

Once again, Terina took on the bulk of the pitching with Skip unable to pitch due to shoulder surgery last year. Teej was solid as usual and one of the main reasons we made it to the finals.

Congratulations also goes to MVP, Sophie Binks for her dominance in the outfield and consistent hitting efforts; Encouragement Award, Katrina Balzat for her work ethics and consistency; and Best Finals Player, Vanessa Lee for her great batting and fielding on first base.

The team would like to thank Debbie Sheldon-Collins for not only scoring but once again helping us out when we were short of players.

Thank you to Anna Clothier and Jacqui Gibbons for organising the Women’s Movie Night. It was a great social night for the club.

Thanks to Kane Longstaff for helping us on game days and making the managing role a little easier for me and to Skip for attending most games in the season even though she couldn’t play. It was great to have her support each Saturday. To everyone else that supported us this season we thank you all. The women play an important role at the Club and should be congratulated for what they offer the Waverley Baseball Club.

PAULA PAPANICOLAOU WOMEN’S DIVISION 1 COACH

WOMEN’S DIVISION 3

I couldn’t have asked for a better group for my first coaching gig. Fun was the main priority, but these girls were in it to win it. We went through the entire year with only two losses and prevailed in a close one on Grand Final day, 6-5.

I would especially like to thank Tony and crew for keeping the field beautiful for us; to Phil for the opportunity; and to Sue for all her hard work and her patience dealing with a first time coach. And also to Paula for her bottomless energy, and Geoff for helping us out during the finals.

Until you've coached, you don't have a true perspective of how important pitching is. Marianne Zwarteveen was the MVP considering she was the difference between us and them a lot of weeks, continued to improve, and pitched out the win in our Grand Final.

Due to her unending enthusiasm and her ability to, playing there for the first time, not only hold down the hot corner, but make it her own, my Coaches Award went to Anna Clothier.

Our Grand Final was a team performance, with Jacqui Gibbons the main hero, going 4-4, and stealing several bases. However, the Best Finals Award went to Brynn Lewin for her performance in the Semi Final. Without Marianne due to work commitments, Brynn threw the whole 7 digs for us, in 30+ heat and came up with clutch hits as well. Without her we may not have even made the Grand Final. A herculean effort having barely pitched throughout the year.

Thank you again for having me. I had a great time.

BILLY ROGERS WOMEN’S DIVISION 3 COACH

JUNIOR REPORTS

UNDER 18

It was another successful year for the Under 18 Wildcats winning our way through to a thrilling Grand Final. After finishing the year with 9 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw, with a few injuries and losing Ryan Dale to the US, we were on shaky ground leading into the finals but the guys really stepped it up in the finals.

There were some fantastic efforts throughout the year - Jack McGraw’s great pitching efforts, Tom Maxfield’s hitting strength, Manning Davidson’s hitting and bunting efforts at crucial times, Jordan Ley's return from injury and his outstanding finals campaign; but as a whole every team member stepped up and did their job when required.

I do want to make special mention of some individual efforts. Andy Hayes for his leadership and gutsy performances at times catching in the 18s and then the Firsts. I think one day he caught 20 innings - congratulations on your Coaches Award. Ben Aslett who was our go to guy to close out games, which saw his pitching improve out of sight along with his great hitting displays - congratulations on your Junior Club Champion award. Lastly I do want to mention Daniel Page's pitching effort in the finals for us. A 7 inning effort in game 1 of the finals to beat Doncaster and then his superb 9 innings, shutout performance earning him the GF MVP winner against the strong Doncaster boys. Although it wasn't a no-hitter it was a 27 out performance which helped to give us a 1-0 win in a thrilling 10 innings grand final win. Congratulations to all the boys on their efforts and I wish them all the best in their baseball careers.

Finally I do want to thanks Paul Carthy for umpiring, Darrin Page for his assistance along with David Clarkson who helped out during the finals and my wife Denise for scoring.

TONY PAGE UNDER 18 COACH

UNDER 16

This season we fielded two representative teams across two divisions of the Baseball Victoria competition.

Wildcats – Chris Hodkinson (Smoke)

The Under 16 Wildcats were runners up in the Grand Final to Cheltenham 5 to 4. We played with wonderful team spirit on the day as we fought back to nearly steal the game in the final innings.

Our team’s major strength was that we were a true team, with all boys making a contribution each and every week and played together as friends and with genuine respect for their teammates and opponents.

I would like to thank all my support staff, Matt Donnelly, Andrew Dunn & Sandra Mascoll. I would also like to thank the senior coaching staff David Clarkson & Phil Dale who allowed the Under 16 boys to train with the senior team most weeks. This allows the boys to be mentored by senior players during batting & fielding practice.

This year we consolidated the Thursday night training session with the Panthers and Wildcats training together. I would like to thank David Johnson for his efforts and support.

My goal for 2012/2013 Under 16 boys was to assist them in the transition from ‘junior’ to ‘senior’ baseball. I believe all boys are well on their way.

I would like to congratulate all the boys who represented their state teams and for the effort and additional trainings they endured. We had eight members in the teams.

Winner of the Peter Sparkman Award was Oliver Dunn with a consistent effort all year and the winner of the Coaches Encouragement Award was Jacob Evans who displayed tremendous improvement.

Good luck to all players who move up to Under 18 teams next season and look forward to seeing you all representing our senior teams in the coming years.

Panthers – David Johnson

The Under 16 Panthers had an outstanding season in a very competitive competition, finishing runnners-up to an undefeated Fitzroy unit. The individual development of each team member over the season was showcased in the lead up to the finals, with every player providing outstanding performances under match day pressure.

Thank you to all of the parents for their support and assistance through the season, to Wendy Johnson for her scoring efforts and to Tim Puyk for his match day coaching and assistance with player development. Thanks also to Steve Culbert and the Committee for their tireless work in fostering the positive club environment.

Congratulations to all of the players on a quality season. Best of luck to the boys who move on the Under 18/Senior levels.

CHRIS HODKINSON & DAVID JOHNSON UNDER 16 COACHES

UNDER 15

Season 2012/2013 saw the appointment of Robert Smart as the Coordinator encouraged by Steve Culbert the Juniors Coordinator.

The task was sold as a making up a fixture and then just watching baseball for the rest of the season. This turned out to be not quite true and the following is the season in review.

Phone calls around to find out whether any external teams would be participating resulted in one , one Upwey and two Blackburn sides; unfortunately Heathmont could not muster up a side.

In terms of the domestic sides we allowed for four sides but with a week to go it was apparent that we had enough for six sides which equates to around 60 Waverley players which is fantastic.

We also allowed the lower age under 16s to play which meant that there were a few brothers playing together and also meant that some of the players that were able to get a pitch, catch or play in infield positions that they would not ordinarily get a chance in rep ball. It also meant that the older boys could be leaders and mentors to the younger players. It was evident from the outset that the older lads took on this role which they all should be congratulated for the maturity they displayed.

The fixture was an interesting exercise and one that had some twists and turns that will be negotiated better next year.

Next task was getting coaches. It can be understated the commitment required to coach the domestic sides. It is a balancing act between giving the players a go but making sure they are safe and the side is competitive.

We were fortunate to have six coaches who were a joy to work with and busted a gut for the kids, in no particular order Greg Howlett, Neil Burke, Brad Orwin, Scott Newell, Steve Culbert and Steve Brown. These six coaches were fantastic and deserve all the thanks for making the season happen.

At season end we got down to two teams the Bobcats and the Cheetahs. It was great game to watch and was taken very seriously by both teams with the Bobcats prevailing as the premiers for season 2012/2013.

In terms of the after games on Fridays nights Melissa O’Connor did a fantastic job with the catering and Michael Busch looking after the bar. They were helped by a select bunch of terrific people who worked flat out all year (better not name them in case I miss someone).

The presentations after the game were a hit a special thanks to our sponsors who provided the awards Ripken Wu from Ausball and David Johnson from Champion Sportswear.

Also a huge thanks to the board, especially Steve Culbert and Sue Montalto who took care of the administration throughout the year and trophies for the end of year presentations.

All in all a successful year some fine tuning required for next year and hopefully we can get the players filtering into the senior ranks.

ROBERT SMART UNDER 15 COORDINATOR

UNDER 14

This season we fielded three representative teams across two divisions of the Baseball Victoria competition.

Wildcats – Neil Burke

The Under 14 Waverley program has continued to produce young athletes who work hard and display a real passion for the game. This is clearly evident at each practice session and in the games that all three teams: Wildcats, Panthers and Cougars are involved in.

This year the Wildcats had 9 of the 11 players on our roster selected to represent Victoria at the U14 Nationals in Canberra. In addition, 2 members of the Panthers were also selected to the State team.

Every player should be proud of their performance and ensure they evaluate their progress in the sport over the whole season rather than an isolated game which they might be disappointed by. The entire group are to be congratulated as their performances led to an exceptional year for the club, resulting in an undefeated season and a dominating final series.

Thanks to Assistant Coaches Stuart, Troy; Scorers Melissa and Kelli; Umpires David and Steve and to all parents who assisted in some way throughout the year.

Panthers – Brad Orwin

The Under 14 Panthers had a very successful season finishing runners up, losing to Fitzroy in the Grand Final, the only team to beat us during the year. The boys showed great improvement from the start of the season and were fun to coach. They should be proud of their efforts and I look forward to watching them progress as baseballers.

Congratulations to Tyler and Mitch for winning awards and having outstanding seasons. Thank you to Neil Burke for our combined trainings and to the dads that helped on the nights.

Special thanks to Dean Johnson-Boe (Assistant Coach), Rob Smart (Team Manager), Sue Montalto (Scorer) and Steve Wright (Umpire). A very big thank you to all the parents who helped setting up the ground.

Cougars – Mitch & Jon Kennedy

For the 2012/2013 Summer Season Jon and I coached the Under 14 Cougars. This was our first time coaching a representative team. The team consisted of 10 players each with varying degrees of playing experience. We had players that could have played in higher team and some that had limited or no experience playing baseball. Over the course of the season we coached the boys on some of the basics and spent time with the pitchers giving them some additional coaching to assist them on the mound and the batters. By the end of the season there was no doubt that the boys had improved as this was capped off with them winning the last game of the season.

Originally slated to be in the AA league the boys won three out of their five grading matches which secured their spot in the AAA league with the Panthers. Their ‘promotion’ to the AAA league meant that they were punching above their weight at times, however there were only a few games in which they were out of their depth and most games they were able to hold their own with some of the more experienced teams.

Throughout the season we aimed to give everyone a chance to pitch and catch if they wanted. Over the course of the season our main pitching staff consisted of Calum Drummond, Jai Callow, Daniel Wright Cooper Rowntree, and Mitchell Wilkinson. Our two catchers were Blake Thornton and Nathan Godden, with Lachlan Tilyard playing the middle infield with Max Turner and Brayden Stehr playing in both the infield and outfield. It was also great to see the improvement in the team batting as the season wore on.

Best Team Member Award went to Daniel Wright and the Coaches Award went to Max Turner.

Both Jon and I enjoyed coaching the boys over the course of the season and look forward to coaching next season.

NEIL BURKE, BRAD ORWIN & MITCH KENNEDY UNDER 14 COACHES

UNDER 12

This season we ran with six teams again in the Under 12 domestic competition. We had 66 players making up teams of 11 players each. Attendance was pretty good this year so most teams had bench players each week. We played 14 rounds of ‘home and away’ games with no washouts and then a Grand Final with the two top teams battling it out. Congratulations to the Serpents on winning the Grand Final for the second year in a row, a great effort by the team and well done to the players who have been in that team both years.

A big thank you to the Under 12 coaches this year: Rod Smith, Scott Trevethan, Murray Noble, Brett Caulfield, Michael Thorne and Glenn Otter. The players need good coaching first and foremost and you guys have done an admirable job.

The Little League academy was conducted again on Thursday evenings giving the opportunity for players to get some much needed training during the week. Again the focus was on improving the skill level of non- representative players. We had about 15 to 20 players attending each week. Thank you to parents and coaches who helped during the sessions.

This year the Under 12s fielded two representative teams: Wildcats coached by Kane Longstaff and Panthers coached by John Makeham. Following the qualifying rounds the Wildcats played in the Major League Division and the Panthers played in the AAA Division. Congratulations to both teams for winning the Grand Finals in their divisions. Both teams were undefeated in their league games with the Wildcats convincingly winning their Grand Final 12-0 and the Panthers winning in a 17-16 thriller. What a terrific result for the club!

A massive thank you to all the people who helped throughout the season – assistant coaches, team managers, scorers, umpires and all the parents for setting up grounds and helping in the canteen. Your efforts make the season run smoothly and without you the season would not have been such a success.

BEDE KARLSEN UNDER 12 COORDINATOR

This season we fielded two representative teams across two divisions of the Baseball Victoria competition.

Wildcats – Kane Longstaff

The 2012/13 season was a special one for the Waverley Under 12 Program with both the Wildcat and Panther teams winning their respective Grand Finals. This was a terrific and rewarding carry over from the near success the previous season when a young Panther team were beaten in the first semi, and the Wildcats were beaten in the Grand Final. The two teams trained for the majority of the season together so the investment in both programs was high, and the enjoyment of both teams walking away with the pennant was felt across the two coaching staffs. The Wildcats experienced the ‘unbeaten’ season. From the beginning of the season the boys were definitely a class above all of the teams they played, which while great to watch from one perspective, was also difficult to develop and challenge the team on a weekly basis. On most occasions the game was over in the first inning or two, and the higher challenge was then keeping them focussed on getting the most out of each at bat or defensive inning.

We had a well-balanced group with six top aged boys and five bottom aged boys. They teamed well from the start, blended in to a tight knit group quickly, and played their baseball with a ‘loose and relaxed’ feel. Winning games well tends to make that easier. We were very deep in all facets of the game with quality pitching, athletic kids in all defensive positions and strong hitting. Probably the most pleasing aspect of the season is the way that we stepped up and played against the other three ranked teams in the division in Sandringham, Geelong and Cheltenham. Sandringham gave us the most trouble during the course of the season, as was expected with their good junior program. However the boys played quality games of baseball against them, especially with some dominant pitching displays in all three games including the Grand Final.

The Most Valuable Player and winner of the Phil Dale Award was Chris Burke. Chris enjoyed a stellar season which started a little slow for the first couple of games, but once he found his stroke was the most damaging and feared hitter in the league. Defensively could play anywhere but was our everyday catcher and controlled the games well, and was a real leader for our boys on the bench as well. Will be fun to watch in years to come. The Coaches Award went to Fraser Smith. Fraser has all the attributes to become a very good baseball player with his athleticism, strong arm and speed. Developed as a hitter during the season with his quick bat and with a refined stroke will be another player to watch. I would like to wish my top aged boys in Liam Evans, Chris Burke, Fraser Smith, Grant Price, Kaioh Sato and Daniel Anderson the best of luck as they move up to the Under 14 age group. All of these boys were outstanding and dominant during the season, and a pleasure to coach.

I would like to thank the Waverley Baseball Club Committee and Junior Committee, on giving me the opportunity to work with this age group and for their support during the season. Hopefully we can continue to take steps to improve the program so we keep hold of the reins as the dominant junior club in the state. Thank you to Steve Culbert in his role as the Junior Coordinator. His passion for the game is infectious and anytime I doubted what I was doing I only needed to listen to Steve for a minute and I was back on track. Special mention to my Assistant Coach in Rod Smith. Rod had a terrific level of energy for the team and I really enjoyed taking in and discussing the game on a weekly basis. He’ll be missed next year as his son moves up to Under 14s. Thank you to the real workers behind the team in my scorers Steph Evans and Terina Stokes. Arguably the more difficult of jobs at this level with everything going on and the new extended line ups. Thank you to John Makeham and Stephen Hill (Coaches of the Panthers team) for your assistance and guidance during the season. It was terrific for both programs to do so well. Also to Glenn Otter and David Anderson who regularly umpired home games, helped with the kids, set up fields, or whatever needed doing on the day. Godsends! I would like to finish by thanking all the parents who were great supporters of their own child and the team as a whole during the season. The kids need that support and it’s important to them in their journey as young baseballers and young boys.

Panthers – John Makeham (report by Assistant Coach, Stephen Hill)

The Under 12 Panthers this year had a fantastic year winning almost all of their games and competing in the AAA competition after the redraw. It was great to see the improvement in all of the players throughout the season both their development in knowledge of the game and in their skills. Mako and I were very impressed with the sportsmanship and the way all the boys bonded together as a team. It is also well timed to thank all the parents who assisted in a variety of ways during the year. The tasks whether it be scoring, assisting on the bench or just coming along to support the kids was fantastic.

All the hard work during the year by everyone involved resulted in the Under 12 Panthers competing in and ultimately winning the Grand Final. This was a fantastic result and the win is as much about the kids as it is about everyone who assisted during the year. The grand final typified the never give up and team spirit that the boys developed during the year with a come from behind win in the last inning.

KANE LONGSTAFF & JOHN MAKEHAM UNDER 12 COACHES

ROOKIE BALL

Rookie Ball in season 2012/2013 had 71 players spread across eight teams. Of the 71 players it was good to see 18 girls playing. To put together the game day including setting up and packing up the equipment, barbecue and canteen duty requires a dedicated group of people so thanks to all the coaches, team managers, parents and players. The coaches this year were: Kerry Gassner, Kane Longstaff, Mark Cavanagh, Andrew Weller, Andy Rose, Brendon Pola, Greg Sharrock and David Thomas.

This season saw the introduction of new playing tops, which the players could keep, and they looked fantastic. We also tried a new game day structure of a 5 minute warm-up, 2 x 20 minutes of skills training and then 1 hour for a game. One skill station focused on batting and the other throwing, catching, fielding and base running. This proved to be a huge success.

With so many girls playing we organised a special training day where members of Waverley’s Women’s team helped out with coaching. We had the Under 15 Girls State team training at Waverley and their coach spoke to our girls about how they could continue playing baseball after Rookie Ball. The players were also able to watch the Under 14 Boys State Team train at Waverley. With the standard of play this year I have no doubt that in the future some of the 2012/13 Rookie Ball players could play for Victoria.

We sent two teams to play an Aussie T-Ball exhibition game before an ACES home game at Melbourne Ballpark. Our players got to have their picture taken with ACES players, get some autographs and participate in on field activities between innings during the ACES game. Thanks to Sue Montalto for help organising the day and Andy Rose for coaching.

The Rookie Ball Gala Day was held at Cheltenham this year and we sent two teams to play. Each team played 5 x 50 minute games and a great day was had by all. Thanks to Andrew Weller, Steve Culbert , Kerry Gassner, Ben Smith and Anton Kokke for help on the day.

On the last session Kerry organised some sliding training. To make this fun for the kids, three wet and soapy “Slip and Slides” were used. This was definitely the highlight training session of the year, and a great way to teach the correct sliding technique and have fun at the same time.

Finally, thanks to Steve Culbert, Stephanie Evans, Sue Montalto and Robyn Karlsen for their help and support this season.

DAVID THOMAS ROOKIE BALL COORDINATOR

TEE BALL

This season experienced lower than expected numbers in our tee ball program but we still fielded six small- sided teams. Sessions were well attended throughout the season with players making measurable improvement in ball skills. Many thanks to this season's coaches: Murray Noble, Ellory Hickson, Nigel Toh, Jai Callow and Karl Hoffman.

Also special thanks to Rod Paton for applying his baseball knowledge and passion for the game each week at Napier Park. Rod's efforts did much to ensure the season was a meaningful and fun learning experience for the players.

5. Reports

President Address The President’s Report written by Phil Dale and presented in the 2012 Annual Report was noted in Phil Dale’s absence.

Administration Report The Administration Report written by Robyn Karlsen and presented in the 2012 Annual Report was verbally summarised by Robyn Karlsen. Fundraising continues to be a struggle but the foundations have been put in place and we will hopefully see results in the coming year. A new uniform was introduced across the seniors. There continues to be problems with the Council booking out the rooms to other community groups. No funds are received for the use and there is extra stress on the facility in the areas of cleaning, wear & tear and having to open & close facility during work hours. However we did have a big win with Council this year with our application for facility funding being accepted, which will provide funds to complete a new back net.

Juniors Report The Juniors Report written by Steve Culbert and presented in the 2012 Annual Report was verbally summarised by Steve Culbert. Steve mentioned that all representative teams made finals this year and the juniors program is doing well. The goal for the coming season is to try to increase player numbers. More senior interaction with the junior program is wanted as the junior players respond well to the older players. The Friday night competition has an additional focus on the social aspect of the club with many families staying at the club after games for dinner and drinks.

All other reports were noted.

It was moved by Tom Kennedy, seconded by David Clarkson that the reports be accepted - CARRIED.

6. Finance Report

The Finance Report written by Chris Peacock and presented in the 2012 Annual Report was verbally summarised by Chris Peacock. Chris mentioned that the finances had been audited by Darryl Cook after the last AGM and this year’s still need to be audited. Last season the Winter program had a loss of $2,400 but this year a Winter Committee has been put in place and the finances have been doing well under this system. There was a profit of $806 overall for the Club.

It was moved by Grant Poke and seconded by Sue Kennedy that the meeting accept the financial statements pursuant to Section 30 of the Association Incorporation Act 1981 - CARRIED.

7. Election of Office Bearers

Robyn Karlsen declared eight Board positions vacant, as is the correct procedure by an incorporated body. It was noted that the Waverley Baseball Club Board would also be the Board of the Waverley Reds.

President, one nomination was received this being Phil Dale, there being no other nominations he was duly elected for a period of two years.

Secretary, one nomination was received this being Sue Montalto, there being no other nominations she was duly elected for a period of one year finishing the term of secretary.

Treasurer, no nominations received. The Board will fill this position in due course.

Steve Culbert retained his position for another year as per the WBC Statement of Purposes.

The election of Ordinary Board members, six directors as per constitution, four positions vacant and two nominations received: Sue Kennedy & Michael Busch. They were all duly elected.

Sincere thanks to the outgoing committee members, Kerry Gassner, Robyn Karlsen, Hannah Paice and Chris Peacock, for their time and commitment given to the club over the past number of years.
