Es una planta suculenta del género Yucca, compuesto por unas 40-50 especies, perennes, arbustos y árboles de la familia Agavaceae nativas de Norteamérica y Centroamérica (1) , de hojas ascendentes, en general, agrupadas hacia los extremos de los tallos, más o menos rígidas, planas o convexas, amarillo-verdosas, verdes o glaucas, algunas veces estriadas, márgenes lisos, dentados o fibrosos; ápice agudo. Inflorescencia en panicula, erecta o pendular, de flores campanuladas o globosas, con seis tépalos curvados, libres o ligeramente unidos en su base, de color blanco- cremoso, algunas veces con tintes rosáceos o morados, seis estambres libres, insertados en la base de los segmentos, ovario súpero, trilocular, óvulos numerosos, y placentación axial, polen monocolpado, tectado, prolato o subprolato, algunas veces esferoidal. El fruto puede ser indehiscente, tanto carnoso (baya) como seco y esponjoso, o deshiscente (cápsula) y la semilla plana, lisa o rugosa, brillante u opaca, de color negro cuando madura, con o sin ala marginal (20). Pueden llegar a alcanzar alturas de hasta 8 metros, aunque su altura más común varía de 2 a 4 metros. Las Yuccas se reproducen tanto sexualmente es decir, por semilla, como vegetativamente o sea por brotes o retoños (1) . En la tabla 1 se muestra la clasificación científica del genero Yucca . (2004) El nombre de estas plantas se indica que deriva de “yuca”, el nombre indio para Manihot esculenta Crantz , que fue atribuido a este género por una confusión en los primeros envíos de plantas (3) . Por ello es importante distinguir el genero Yucca de la “mandioca”. La mandioca pertenece a la especie Manihot esculenta , que es una planta 6 Propuesta para el aprovechamiento de residuos industriales de Yucca 2009 perteneciente a la familia de las euforbiáceas y que se cultiva fundamentalmente por sus tubérculos que constituyen una de las principales fuentes de alimentación de América Central (19) . Fuera de su lugar de origen, las Yuccas son utilizadas como plantas de jardinería. Ya que su atractivo aspecto y rusticidad (como se muestra en la Figura 1) al ser nativas de regiones áridas y aptas para la conservación del agua, hace que las Yuccas se cultiven ampliamente como ornamentales; aunque los tallos y frutos de muchas especies sean comestibles, es raro su uso en ese sentido (3) . Se encuentra en el sur de Canadá, la distribución sigue un movimiento hacia el sur del continente por lo cual se le halla en el suroeste de los Estados Unidos, pasando por

    Habitat selection of the desert night lizard (Xantusia vigilis) on Mojave yucca (Yucca schidigera) in the Mojave Desert, California Kirsten Boylan1, Robert Degen2, Carly Sanchez3, Krista Schmidt4, Chantal Sengsourinho5 University of California, San Diego1, University of California, Merced2, University of California, Santa Cruz3, University of California, Davis4 , University of California, San Diego5 ABSTRACT The Mojave Desert is a massive natural ecosystem that acts as a biodiversity hotspot for hundreds of different species. However, there has been little research into many of the organisms that comprise these ecosystems, one being the desert night lizard (Xantusia vigilis). Our study examined the relationship between the common X. vigilis and the Mojave yucca (Yucca schidigera). We investigated whether X. vigilis exhibits habitat preference for fallen Y. schidigera log microhabitats and what factors make certain log microhabitats more suitable for X. vigilis inhabitation. We found that X. vigilis preferred Y. schidigera logs that were larger in circumference and showed no preference for dead or live clonal stands of Y. schidigera. When invertebrates were present, X. vigilis was approximately 50% more likely to also be present. These results suggest that X. vigilis have preferences for different types of Y. schidigera logs and logs where invertebrates are present. These findings are important as they help in understanding one of the Mojave Desert’s most abundant reptile species and the ecosystems of the Mojave Desert as a whole.     Lake Havasu City Recommended Landscaping Plant List Lake Havasu City Recommended Landscaping Plant List Disclaimer Lake Havasu City has revised the recommended landscaping plant list. This new list consists of plants that can be adapted to desert environments in the Southwestern United States. This list only contains water conscious species classified as having very low, low, and low-medium water use requirements. Species that are classified as having medium or higher water use requirements were not permitted on this list. Such water use classification is determined by the type of plant, its average size, and its water requirements compared to other plants. For example, a large tree may be classified as having low water use requirements if it requires a low amount of water compared to most other large trees. This list is not intended to restrict what plants residents choose to plant in their yards, and this list may include plant species that may not survive or prosper in certain desert microclimates such as those with lower elevations or higher temperatures. In addition, this list is not intended to be a list of the only plants allowed in the region, nor is it intended to be an exhaustive list of all desert-appropriate plants capable of surviving in the region.
