SEMINOLE — Longtime city council- or Bob Matthews died of gastric cancer March 18. He was 75. Upon his return to Florida, he earned a two- year electronics degree from Pinellas Vo- cational Technical Institute and attended Times Photo by CHRIS HENDERSON classes at St. Petersburg Junior College. He was a mechanic in the Air Force, said his wife, Pat Matthews. “He was very tech minded.” His daughter, Diana Beckham, said, “He was very skilled with machinery. He was mathematical minded. Calculus was nothing for him. He was super smart with that.” Bob met his wife at the former Grace Baptist Church in Pinellas Park. “We dated and married at the same church and put down roots here and never moved,” Pat said. In 1971, they moved to unincorporated Seminole, and purchased a home within city limits in 1978. For 32 years, he worked for Florida Power Corp. as an instrument technician. By the time he retired, his wife had left her career as a dental assistant to enter the fi eld of fl oral design. Forgo blame Re: Disease a natural thing (March 19) Regarding the letter to the editor “Disease a natural thing,” the writer is misinformed on two points. For most of the aging population, their biggest sin is growing old. Many take care of themselves and now routinely work out at gyms free with Medicare Supplement programs. In addition, President Trump is not to blame for the situation we are now in. Immunologist Anthony Fauci, who is on the White House Coronavirus Task Force, recently pointed out that the way the CDC was set up to handle things like seasonal fl u was through state labs. Flu epidemics required minimal testing. The traditional CDC approach, established under previous administrations, is totally insuffi cient for the current pandemic. The approach that is now in place, established by the Trump Task Force, includes working with medical equipment manufacturers and private testing labs. We should be seeing large improvements in testing, increased manufacturing of ventilators, and, we now have a process for handling this kind of challenge in the future. Getting our medical industry on a war-like footing doesn’t happen overnight. As Americans, our effort should be on solving the problem. We should not expend effort trying to fi x blame. Answering criticisms of Bernie Sanders Comment: Socialism is communism. A Communist government has total control over the economic, political and social life of its citizens; in a democratic socialist country, government-control is limited to and responsible for the absolute necessities of all its citizens: health care, education, security, roads, bridges and transportation, among other responsibilities. Comment: Bernie is too old. Germany’s voters chose, in 1949, a 75-year-old, Konrad Adenauer, to be its chancellor for the next 14 years. Comment: Free this, free that. As president, he won’t be able to pay for it all. He will defl ate the military budget with its 800 military bases around the world; tax Wall Street 1 cent for every transaction amounting to $400 billion a year in returns; transfer the cost of health care and prescription drugs from doctors, hospitals, pharmaceuticals, pharmacies, to the federal government similar to other industrial countries in Europe; eliminate tax havens and reform the tax code so that everyone pays his fair share. In this manner, the middle class will share the wealth of the nation and the poor will be taken care of. That’s democratic socialism. Comment: Only a Communist speaks highly of a Communist country. Bernie, like President Obama, paid Cuba only two compliments: its health care for all and education for all. Like Obama, he condemns the Communist control over the social, political and economic lives of its people. What should be told is that the U.S. sanctions against Cuba for 50-plus years did not bring down the Communist government but it did Roll up your sleeves and be a lifesaver bring down the possibility of a healthy economy for the Cuban people.
