Patterns of species richness are described for 50 cacti and (e) pereskioid cacti. Chapter 1: Introduction In Ecological and Biological Diversity of National Forests in Region 3 Bruce Vander Lee, Ruth Smith, and Joanna Bate The Nature Conservancy EXECUTIVE SUMMARY We summarized existing regional-scale biological and ecological assessment information from Arizona and New Mexico for use in the development of Forest Plans for the eleven National Forests in USDA Forest Service Region 3 (Region 3). Under the current Planning Rule, Forest Plans are to be strategic documents focusing on ecological, economic, and social sustainability. In addition, Region 3 has identified restoration of the functionality of fire-adapted systems as a central priority to address forest health issues. Assessments were selected for inclusion in this report based on (1) relevance to Forest Planning needs with emphasis on the need to address ecosystem diversity and ecological sustainability, (2) suitability to address restoration of Region 3’s major vegetation systems, and (3) suitability to address ecological conditions at regional scales. We identified five assessments that addressed the distribution and current condition of ecological and biological diversity within Region 3. We summarized each of these assessments to highlight important ecological resources that exist on National Forests in Arizona and New Mexico: • Extent and distribution of potential natural vegetation types in Arizona and New Mexico • Distribution and condition of low-elevation grasslands in Arizona • Distribution of stream reaches with native fish occurrences in Arizona • Species richness and conservation status attributes for all species on National Forests in Arizona and New Mexico • Identification of priority areas for biodiversity conservation from Ecoregional Assessments from Arizona and New Mexico Analyses of available assessments were completed across all management jurisdictions for Arizona and New Mexico, providing a regional context to illustrate the biological and ecological importance of National Forests in Region 3. -

Symplocos wikstroemiifolia Hayata is one of the few morphologically androdioecious spe- cies in Symplocaceae. Although this species has been proposed as cryptically dioecious, little is known about its patterns of sexual expression in the field. We studied the breeding system and reproductive biology of S. wikstroemiifolia in Taiwan. Field investigations showed that anthers of most morphologically hermaphroditic flowers did not produce pollen grains; thus, this flower type should be considered female. Nearly all flowering individuals produced only male or female flowers. The sex ratios were slightly male-biased, but did not sig- nificantly deviate from 1:1, congruent with the proposed cryptic dioecy status. However, two individuals pro- duced flowers that may have been functionally hermaphroditic, suggesting a variation of sexual expression in S. wikstroemiifolia. There were about 12 stamens per male flower but only five staminodes per female flower. No locules and ovules existed in the male flowers, while two locules within the ovary of the female flowers con- tained four ovules each (two large, two small). Male individuals produced cymes and thyrses, whereas female individuals only produced cymes. Some of these morphological characteristics differed from those previously described. Anthesis of most male and female flowers began before dawn and lasted for one to two days. Nev- ertheless, anther dehiscence, which only occurred under dry conditions, was not restricted to a specific time period during the day. -

IPM, a scientifically based approach for pest management, incorporates cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical Aphid options as part of an overall pest management program. The primary focus of an IPM program is to utilize a non-toxic or least toxic approach in addressing pest control concerns. During this workshop, Ants, a very common home and garden pest in San Diego County, will be used to demonstrate the proper implementation of an IPM approach. This floristic project takes a geological approach inspired by Dalea reverchonii (Comanche Peak prairie clover), which is primarily endemic to glades of the Walnut Formation. The Cretaceous Walnut Formation (Comanchean) lies on the drier western edge of the Fort Worth Prairie in North Central Texas. Its shallow limestone soils, formed from alternating layers of hard limestone and clayey marl, support a variety of habitats. Glades of barren limestone typically appear on ridgetops, grassland savannas form on eroding hillslopes, and seeps support diverse hyperseasonal vegetation. Vouchers were collected from January 2010 to June 2012 resulting in 469 infraspecific taxa, 453 species in 286 genera and 79 families. The richest five plant families are Asteraceae (74 taxa), Poa- ceae (73), Fabaceae (34), Euphorbiaceae (18), and Cyperaceae (17). There are 61 introduced species. Results indicate floristic affinities to limestone cedar glades of the Southeastern United States, the Edwards Plateau of Central Texas, and calcareous Apacherian Savannas of Southwestern North America.
