Museum of Contemporary Art Joins the Great Heritage Sites of the Loire Valley
Press release Montsoreau, December 29, 2020 The Château de Montsoreau - Museum of Contemporary Art joins the Great Heritage Sites of the Loire Valley. Five years after its opening to the public, the Château de Montsoreau- Museum of contemporary art has become the 23rd site to join the network of the UNESCO Great Heritage Sites of the Loire Valley, alongside the châteaux of Chenonceau, Chambord, Cheverny and Blois, Chaumont-sur-Loire, Villandry, Langeais, Chinon, Sully-sur-Loire, Brissac, Brézé, Valençay, Loches, Saumur, Angers, Amboise, Azay-le-Rideau, Dukes of Brittany, Rivau, Clos Lucé, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud and the Cadre Noir of Saumur. Founded in 2016 by the collector Philippe Méaille, the Château de Montsoreau - Museum of Contemporary Art is located in one of the jewels of French architecture: the only Château of the Loire Valley built in the Loire riverbed, made famous by many artists including J.M.W Turner and Alexandre Dumas. The Château de Montsoreau - Museum of Contemporary Art relies on a permanent collection which includes the world’s largest collection of artworks by the artists of Art & Language. "Since its opening, the Château de Montsoreau - Museum of Contemporary Art has taken on the radical nature of its positioning within the Châteaux of the Loire Valley, the polemical and corrosive nature of contemporary art making it a laboratory of modernity from the outset,” declares Marie-Caroline Chaudruc, Vice-President. Attendance at the Museum of Contemporary Art has increased steadily and in 2019 reached 52,000 visitors. Driven by a desire for international development and networking, the Château de Montsoreau - Museum of Contemporary Art shares the approach of excellence that has characterized the network of the Great Heritage Sites of the Loire Valley since 2008. -

Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact. -

CHAMPS-ELYSEES ROLL OR STROLL From the Arc de Triomphe to the Tuileries Gardens Don’t leave Paris without experiencing the avenue des Champs-Elysées (shahnz ay-lee-zay). This is Paris at its most Parisian: monumental side- walks, stylish shops, grand cafés, and glimmering showrooms. This tour covers about three miles. If that seems like too much for you, break it down into several different outings (taxis roll down the Champs-Elysées frequently and Métro stops are located every 3 blocks). Take your time and enjoy. It’s a great roll or stroll day or night. The tour begins at the top of the Champs-Elysées, across a huge traffic circle from the famous Arc de Triomphe. Note that getting to the arch itself, and access within the arch, are extremely challenging for travelers with limited mobility. I suggest simply viewing the arch from across the street (described below). If you are able, and you wish to visit the arch, here’s the informa- tion: The arch is connected to the top of the Champs-Elysées via an underground walkway (twenty-five 6” steps down and thirty 6” steps back up). To reach this passageway, take the Métro to the not-acces- sible Charles de Gaulle Etoile station and follow sortie #1, Champs- Elysées/Arc de Triomphe signs. You can take an elevator only partway up the inside of the arch, to a museum with some city views. To reach the best views at the very top, you must climb the last 46 stairs. A quick tour of Paris 1 A QUICK TOUR OF PARIS 12 – 17 April 2016 Text by John Biggs © 2016 Images by John Biggs and Catherine Tang © 2016 A quick tour of Paris 2 A QUICK TOUR OF PARIS 22 hours and four plane changes see us arrive at Charles De Gaulle Airport whacked out. We have booked on a river cruise down the Rhone but have taken a five day tour of Paris before joining the cruise. We are met by a girl from the Dominican Republic who came to Paris a year ago with no French and massive ambitions. Four jobs later she is fluent in French, has an excellent job in tourism and is seeking more worlds to conquer. She takes us to a large car with a taciturn driver who is to take us to our hotel but something funny is going on: we have been going for much longer than expected, we pass through the grimmest industrial parts of Paris in silence. At one major intersection, police cars and motor cycles, light flashing, sirens wailing, weave in and around us. We look uneasily at each other: this is the month of the bombings. But wailing police sirens is a sound that is as Parisian as the Eiffel Tower, we are to discover. After an hour and some we finally arrive at Hotel Duminy-Vendome in the centre of Paris and our driver turns out to have excellent English, which he now uses freely. I had been studying French on line with Duolingo to 52% fluency (try it if you want to learn a language, it’s fantastic) but that doesn’t seem much use here. -

Email to request login credentials. Major Rembrandt Portrait Painting on Loan to the Wadsworth from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Hartford, Conn. (January 21, 2020)—Rembrandt’s Titus in a Monk’s Habit (1660) is coming to Hartford, Connecticut. On loan from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the painting will be on view at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art from February 1 through April 30, 2020. Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669), recognized as one of the most important artists of his time and considered by many to be one of the greatest painters in European history, painted his teenage son in the guise of a monk at a crucial moment in his late career when he was revamping his business as a painter and recovering from bankruptcy. It has been fifty-three years since this painting has been on view in the United States making this a rare opportunity for visitors to experience a late portrait by the Dutch master among the collection of Baroque art at the Wadsworth renowned for its standout paintings by Rembrandt’s southern European contemporaries, Zurbarán, Oratio Gentileschi, and Caravaggio. While this painting has been infrequently seen in America, it exemplifies the dramatic use of light and dark to express human emotion for which Rembrandt’s late works are especially prized. “Titus in a Monk’s Habit is an important painting. It opens questions about the artist’s career, his use of traditional subjects, and the bold technique that has won him enduring fame,” says Oliver Tostmann, Susan Morse Hilles Curator of European Art at the Wadsworth. -
