(1994) species distribution has not been estimated; while in the interim period focus has been on population numbers and trends (Rösner et al., 1994, Poot et al., 1996) and new statis tical methods have been introduced and results have been provided (Blew et al., 2005a, Blew et al., 2007). The data presented in this report is a part of the Trilateral Monitoring and Assessment Pro gram for the Wadden Sea gathered by the Joint Monitoring of Migratory Birds program. It con sists of (a) at least 23 synchronous, complete, counts each year, and (b) bimonthly counts dur ing spring tide at 60 counting sites and (c) ad ditional three counts for geese and aerial counts for Shelduck and Eider. The trilateral counts were initiated in 1980 and from 1987/1988 a solid counting scheme was established, which makes it possible to produce trends calculated not only from winter or autumn, but on yearround data. To do this, missing data are substituted by cal culated numbers to fill in gaps in the counts. This paper presents results from 1987/1988 2007/2008, thus covering a period of 21 years.     The Cultural Heritage of the Wadden Sea 1. Overview Name: Wadden Sea Delimitation: Between the Zeegat van Texel (i.e. Marsdiep, 52° 59´N, 4° 44´E) in the west, and Blåvands Huk in the north-east. On its seaward side it is bordered by the West, East and North Frisian Islands, the Danish Islands of Fanø, Rømø and Mandø and the North Sea. Its landward border is formed by embankments along the Dutch provinces of North- Holland, Friesland and Groningen, the German state of Lower Saxony and southern Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein. Size: Approx. 12,500 square km. Location-map: Borders from west to east the southern mainland-shore of the North Sea in Western Europe. Origin of name: ‘Wad’, ‘watt’ or ‘vad’ meaning a ford or shallow place. This is presumably derives from the fact that it is possible to cross by foot large areas of this sea during the ebb-tides (comparable to Latin vadum, vado, a fordable sea or lake). Relationship/similarities with other cultural entities: Has a direct relationship with the Frisian Islands and the western Danish islands and the coast of the Netherlands, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and south Denmark. Characteristic elements and ensembles: The Wadden Sea is a tidal-flat area and as such the largest of its kind in Europe. A tidal-flat area is a relatively wide area (for the most part separated from the open sea – North Sea ̶ by a chain of barrier- islands, the Frisian Islands) which is for the greater part covered by seawater at high tides but uncovered at low tides.

    Coastal Dynamics 2017 Paper No. 235 CONNECTING SUBTIDAL AND SUBAERIAL SAND TRANSPORT PATHWAYS IN THE TEXEL INLET SYSTEM 1 Kathelijne Wijnberg1, Ad van der Spek2, Filipe Galiforni Silva , Edwin Elias3, ,2 Mick van der Wegen4 , and Jill Slinger5 Abstract Potential transport pathways between the subtidal and subaerial part of tidal inlet systems are explored by means of a case study of Texel Inlet, The Netherlands. Based on a morphologic analysis of multi-annual, high-resolution bathymetric and topographic data sets we hypothesize that two mechanisms connect the subtidal and subaerial parts of the system. The first mechanism relates to deposition on the tip of the island occurring to a large extent below spring high tide level, providing a fresh sediment source available for aeolian transport during parts of the tidal cycle. The second mechanism relates to sand deposition on the wide sandflat above spring high tide level occurring during storm surge flooding. These deposits are then available for aeolian transport during regular water levels. Due to the dominant wind direction at Texel Island, this leads to extensive dune formation on the downwind end of the sandflat. Introduction Tidal inlets are cross-roads for sediment exchange, not only between the open coast and the connected tidal basin but also between the submerged ebb-delta and emerging sand shoals that, once attached to the shore, may induce vertical build-up of the coast above storm surge levels through dune formation. Identifying and understanding the transport pathways of sediment from the subtidal domain onto the barrier island is highly relevant, as the elevation of a barrier island above storm surge water levels is one of the primary factors in barrier island geomorphologic response to storms (e.g.

The overview can be used to identify areas where the morphological evolution is partly controlled by the presence of erosion-resistant deposits. The report shows that the build-up is heterogeneous and contains several erosion-resistant deposits that could influence both the short- and long-term evolution of these coastal zones and especially tidal channels. The nature of these resistant deposits is very variable, reflecting the diverse geological development of The Netherlands over the last 65 million years. In the southwestern part of The Netherlands they are mostly Tertiary deposits and Holocene peat-clay sequences that are relatively resistant to erosion. Also in South- and North-Holland Holocene peat-clay sequences have been preserved, but in the Rhine-Meuse river-mouth area Late Pleistocene• early Holocene floodplain deposits form additional resistant layers. In northern North-Holland shallow occurrences of clayey Eemian-Weichselian deposits influence coastal evolution. In the northern part of The Netherlands it are mostly Holocene peat-clay sequences, glacial till and over consolidated sand and clay layers that form the resistant deposits. The areas with resistant deposits at relevant depths and position have been outlined in a map. The report also zooms in on a few tidal inlets to quick scan the potential role of the subsurface in their evolution.

    wadkanovaren.nl De natuur op het wad Bijzonderheden over belangrijke natuurgebieden op het wad Het wad is in de eerste plaats een natuurgebied. Maar de Waddenzee is ook een geliefd gebied voor recreatievaart, waar- onder kanoërs. Het wad is een belangrijk gebied voor zeehonden, vele vogelsoorten, vissen en andere zeeorganismen, zoals krabben en schelpdieren. Juist aan die natuur ontleent het wad zijn aantrekkelijkheid voor veel mensen. Het is dus mede in belang van de recreatie dat de natuur op het wad in stand wordt gehouden en zo veel mogelijk verder wordt ontwikkeld. Op tal van plekken op het wad zijn de belangen van natuur en recreatie strijdig met elkaar. Het gaat dan enerzijds om broed- gebieden, werp- en zoogplekken voor zeehonden, foerageergebieden, ruigebieden, opvetgebieden voor de vogeltrek, hoog- watervluchtplaatsen en mosselbanken en anderzijds om mooie plekken om te kunnen droogvallen, te kunnen wadlopen en met de kano op zandplaten en kwelders te kunnen aanlanden. De verschillende organisaties uit zowel de recreatiehoek, de natuurbescherming als de overheid proberen zo goed mogelijk aan alle belangen tegemoet te komen. Uitgangspunt is dat daar waar de kwetsbare natuur in het gedrang zou komen door menselijke activiteiten de natuur voorrang krijgt en dat voor zo'n gebied een beperkte toegankelijkheid geldt, variërend van een totaal betredingsverbod gedurende het hele jaar tot rustige doorvaart of beperkte toegang op één plek tijdens een bepaalde periode. Helaas wordt deze voorrang voor de natuur wel geweld aangedaan en terzijde geschoven zodra er economische belangen in het spel zijn, zoals bijvoorbeeld het geval is rond de Eemshaven en de Eems.
