Jenkins Affl alo Still Not An All-Star BY CLINTON ************************************************************************************************** REYES, TIMES SPORTS WRITER Orlando Magic - Amway Center, Orlando ORLANDO – In the per- fect world, Orlando would be 38-11 and leading the NBA into the All-Star break, and in do- ing so, undoubtedly secure an All-Star roster selection for SG Aaron Affl alo. Playing like one, Affl alo is having quite the year and his play has brought many to believe in his worthiness of a fi rst All-Star appearance. But, the NBA we have all come to un- derstand is not one to commend a great player, on a bad team. Give it up for @nhnets Despite having a career year and ranking among the top shooting guards in practically every sta- #GiveItUpForGood tistical category, Affl alo’s hopes of making his fi rst NBA All-Star team were dashed on Thursday when he was left off the team. Clearly, Orlando’s 12-35 record factored into the decision to pick the likes of DerMar DeRo- zan and Joe Johnson ahead of Orlando’s standout guard. The rosters (see Magic notes below) were clearly chosen based on partial statistical evi- dence but more heavily weight- ed on winning percentage and fan appeal. Affl alo has shown signs over the past few years of becoming a better player, raising his scoring average in 7 straight seasons. He currently ranks 15th in the NBA in scor- ing (20 ppg.) and third among shooting guards behind James Harden and DeRozan. Just a day after the selec- tions were announced, Affl alo proceeded with business as usu- al, and offered up a friendly re- minder to the league why he was worthy of discussion. Hosting the Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando and Affl alo came out with a ven- geance scoring a season high 67 points in the fi rst half, led by non other, Affl alo with 17. He would go on to fi nish the game and lead all scorers with 21 in just three quarters of play. Orlando dominated play, out rebounding the Bucks 30-18 and also led in fast break points 12- 3. Defensively Orlando was also outstanding, causing the Bucks 13 turnovers, which led to 17 points for the home team. Affl alo addressed the media postgame and commented on his All-Star thoughts as well as the game: “Sometimes the NBA season is so long, when your losing games you kind of get in this autopilot type of mode, but ive got an extreme fi re burning overall, not even about tonight, “ he said. “I just think my focus is going to be heightened, with every little thing I do”. With regards to the All-Star Snub: “ There are certain feelings you get at certain points in your life, whether it’s a motivating factor or something that you looked forward to that didn’t happen; But for me, its created a new lev- el of passion and a new level of hunger.” Affl alo came into this game averaging career highs in points, rebounds and assists. MAGIC NOTES – Chris Bosh, Roy Hibbert, Joakim Noah, John Wall, Paul Mill- sap, Johnson and DeRozan were picked as East reserves behind starters LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Paul George, Carmelo Anthony and Kyrie Ir- ving. Per team policy, terms were not announced. “Jason provides us with additional size and a good interior defensive presence,” Sund said. “He has extensive experience, having started in two NBA Finals with the Nets, and is another player with strong character and leadership qualities.” An eight-year veteran, Collins spent last season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he appeared in 31 games (22 starts), and averaged 1.8 ppg and 2.3 rpg. He spent his first six-and-a-half seasons with the New Jersey Nets, where he appeared in 510 contests (starting 404 of them) before he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies on February 4, 2008 in exchange for Stromile Swift. He then came to the Timberwolves as part of an eight-player deal on June 26, 2008 that also involved Kevin Love and O.J. Mayo. Collins has played in 572 career regular season games, including 429 starting assignments, averaging 4.2 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 1.0 apg in 23.4 mpg (.410 FG%, .648 FT%). Collins also has significant postseason experience, playing in 75 playoff games (3.7 ppg, 4.4 rpg), including two trips to the NBA Finals with the Nets in 2002 and 2003. The native of Southern California played four seasons at Stanford University alongside twin brother Jarron (now of the Utah Jazz).

Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors earned his first All-Star selection, joining teammate and starter Stephen Curry to give the Western Conference-leading Warriors two All-Stars for the first time since Chris Mullin and Tim Hardaway in 1993. The 64 th NBA All-Star Game will tip off Sunday, Feb. 15, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The game will be seen by fans in 215 countries and territories and will be heard in 47 languages. TNT will televise the All-Star Game for the 13th consecutive year, marking Turner Sports' 30 th year of NBA All- Star coverage. The Hawks’ trio is joined in the East by Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat, the Chicago Bulls’ Jimmy Butler and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kyrie Irving . This is the 11 th consecutive All-Star selection for Wade and the 10 th straight nod for Bosh, who becomes only the third player in NBA history to earn five trips to the All-Star Game with two different teams (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kevin Garnett). This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.
