I rise today to recognize the Gilas Pilipinas national basketball team, which last night bagged the silver medal in the 27th FIBA Asia Championships, earning it a coveted slot to finally participatate among the world’s best in the upcoming FIBA World Championship in Madrid, Spain next year. Mr. Speaker, today is a glorious day for Philippine sports. Through the unpararelled team effort, strong determination and unwavering commitment of the Gilas Pilipinas, the Philippines was able to register the strongest finish yet in 27 years in the FIBA Asia Championships. Basketball- loving Filipinos all over the world have long believed that we can sustain, and even surpass this impressive showing not only because of our national team’s proven basketball skills and acumen but because finally, we now have the organization, teamwork and resolve to unite under one flag and country, toward the attainment of a common and shared goal. Today is a day of jubilation, Mr. Speaker, my dear colleagues, as we celebrate not just a victory on the basketball court, but of the triumph of the undying Filipino competitive spirit and unrelenting will to succeed. Several factors, events, and people came together and saw fruition in the years and months leading up and culminating in our national team’s inspiring performance from August 1 to 11, 2013.     Modern Day Singapore May 15, 2016 23:08 +08 Merlion Cup 2016 MERLION CUP RETURNS AFTER A 20-YEAR BREAK The Basketball Association of Singapore (BAS) is pleased to announce that it will be organising the Merlion Cup from 21-25 September 2016, reviving this International Basketball Marquee Tournament since it was last held in 1996. The whole Tournament will involve six professional clubs and will be played in a round-robin format. Venue is at our Sports Hub – OCBC Arena. There will be five Overseas Professional Clubs invited to participate and they are from China, Australia, Taiwan and Malaysia. The fifth club has yet to confirm its participation. Singapore will be represented by the Singapore Slingers team which finished a creditable 2nd place in the recently concluded ASEAN Basketball League. Majority of the Slingers players will come from the National Team. Local stalwarts like Wong Wei Long, Wu Qingde and Delvin Koh are likely to feature in the Slingers team participating in this year’s Merlion Cup. MERLION CUP In the 1980s and 1990s, the Merlion Cup was an International Marquee Basketball event in the Singapore’s sporting calendar. Held at the then Gay World Stadium, the Merlion Cup attracted capacity crowds on a daily basis. Singapore basketball fans had fond memories of this Tournament which allowed them to see Asian giants like China, Korea, Japan, Philippines fighting out with non-Asian countries like Australia, Yugoslavia, USSR. The tournament was stopped after the 9th edition of the competition in 1996 due to sponsorship problems. In a lead up to the Merlion Cup, there would be a FIBA 3x3 tournament island- wide commencing in August which is Co-organised with Sports Singapore.

An exploratory and descriptive study, it aims not only to define the elements of openness of UPOU, but also to unravel the causes and solutions to the issues and concerns that limit its options to becoming a truly open university. It is based on four parameters of openness, which are widely universal in the literature, e.g., open admissions, open curricula, distance education at scale, and the co-creation, sharing and use of open educational resources (OER). It draws from the perception survey among peers, which the author conducted in UPOU in July and August 2012. It also relies on relevant secondary materials on the subject. What if you could revisit and download the questions you took during the UPCAT (University of the Philippines College Admission Test)? I received information that this will soon be a possibility. It’s not yet official though. For some people, including yours truly, this is the same set of questions that made and unmade dreams. Not all UPCAT takers make it. Only a small fraction pass the test.
