He is believed to have been married and that his eldest child was named Walter. John Skehan (aa) was baptised on 3rd May 1787. But it must be noted that there is a John Skehan who died 18th May, 1804, aged 77, and is buried at St. Johnstown with other members of the family: but he however would be too old to be same person as above John, and is perhaps the father of Walter (a). When I had attained 16 years I was apprenticed to the grocery and spirit business in Hughie Shelley's of Thurles. Later on I went to work for Michael Bown in the same business in that town. I was with the last mentioned employer until the end of 1916 when I had to go home for a period to recuperate from sickness.. I returned to business In Thurles early in 1917, and then went to work for Michael (or 'Mixey') O'Connell, as he was popularly called. O'Connell was a prominent Sinn Feiner and Irish Volunteer and his house in later days became the headquarters of the Mid-Tipperary Brigade.

    Criteria for National Awards: Ponies must have a current showing card for 2017which must be returned to the IPS Office as soon as the pony has finished competing and before September 23rd. Showing cards must be completed clearly and correctly. Novice Awards are for ponies with the highest number of points accrued in novice classes only. Open awards are for ponies with the highest number of points accrued in open classes only. There is no combination of points in any category. The ‘Points Winner of the Year’ goes to the pony with the highest number of points gained in any one category. The ‘Champion Pony of the Year’ goes to the pony with the most points recorded for champion @ 10pts and Reserve Champion @ 5pts. These points are only recorded for this award and are not listed below. There are no points for Supreme Championships and points are only recorded in the section for which the pony is declared. The ‘Arran Bobby’ is awarded for the registered Connemara Pony that gains the highest number of points in Open or Novice Working Hunter classes. Points gained in Connemara or Mountain & Moorland WHP classes are not included. Where a pony competes in two shows on the same day only one set of points will be recorded for National Awards, but both will be counted towards open/novice status. Classes such as the Tom Robinson Gold Cup, The Champion of Champions, etc. held at the IPS Championship Show do not carry points, nor do derby classes. Where a qualifier for a certain event requires a class to be held separately from one that is already scheduled in the same category, no IPS points are awarded.
