Mileage Reimbursement Rate: Effective July 1, 2015, the Diocese has adopted the already approved IRS standard mileage reimburse rate of $0.575: New Standard Business Mileage Rates July 2015. Upon presentation of documentation that indicates the day, the main points of travel, the distance, and the nature of the business travel, parishes and diocesan offices are permitted to reimburse at the rate of $0.575/mile. The travel must be related to one’s assigned duties for the parish or the diocese, have documentation, and cannot include commuter miles (that is, miles driven between your residence and primary office/place of work).

Advisories: Please contact the Chancery (either the Chancellor or the Moderator of the Curia) if you are contacted by or have information about the following individuals or organizations about whom the Office of the General Secretary of the USCCB has issued the following advisories:  NEW from the USCCB Office of the General Counsel: If you/your parish are approached by a person by the name of Michael Cypret (as known as “Fr. Michael,” “Patriarch Archbishop Michael,” or “Michael Ethans”), please contact the Chancery.  Please beware of any and all mailings that you may receive (both through electronic and postal service) that promise your parish, school, cemetery, or other organization a bequest, inheritance, grant, or other sum of money in exchange for a "good faith/gesture or commission." Such offers are "too good to be true"; please do not respond in any fashion.

Changing Address? If a priest or parish has a change of address for any location with mail delivery (whether residence, office, parish center, church, school, etc.), please send the old and the new addresses to [email protected]. By using this centralized system, Chancery will be able to , update and notify all of its departments/offices of address changes simultaneously. Thank you for your cooperation with this process that is intended to serve you better.

Directives for Visiting Priests (clarification) - Distinction between the need for a vs. a Letter of Suitability: Please remember that pastors should always exercise caution in admitting priests to ministry in the parish, especially when they are unknown to them or their parishioners. Even if known personally by the priests of the parish, a visiting priest must have his canonical superior (bishop or religious superior) send a letter of suitability to Bishop Deeley. If the letter is sent directly to the parish, then a copy must be provided to the bishop. If the bishop receives the letter, a COPY of the original will be emailed to the parish, and the original will be kept in the parish file at Chancery. The only time a celebret suffices is if the cleric is visiting the area (i.e., relatives) and will be in attendance as a concelebrant (neither as the principal celebrant nor as the homilist). The celebret must be dated within the year. If there are any concerns relative to the status of a visiting priest, please consult Sr. Rita-Mae Bissonnette, Chancellor. Conversely, if a priest or of the Diocese of Portland is going to exercise ministry outside our diocese, then a Letter of Suitability should be requested from the Bishop’s Office, ideally two to three weeks before the event. It is understood that advance notice may not be possible if you are going to celebrate a funeral, but all other requests should be planned.

Engaging Parents: Forming Family Faith Workshop in Portland on November 12

It will offer ways to support them in deepening their own faith at home and in the parish, and through service and outreach together. Journey Retreat, “Steeped in Mercy, Offered in Love,” in Auburn on Nov. 20-22

Journey, an annual retreat for youth who seek to grow in and deepen their relationships with one another and with Christ, is scheduled for November 20-22 at Saint Dominic Academy in Auburn. This year’s theme is “Steeped in Mercy, Offered in Love.” Based on the “Youth 2000” retreat, Journey is centered on Christ, particularly as we encounter him so intimately in the Scriptures, the Eucharist, and confession. After being steeped in these experiences of his mercy, Journey presenters also invite young people to respond to Jesus by faithfully serving God and neighbor in union with Our Lady and all the saints. Bishop Robert P. Deeley will celebrate Mass on Saturday and spend time with the gathering. The cost is $90 per student or parish chaperone. If a family is not able to afford the full cost, youth ministers should contact the diocese at [email protected] so that organizers can send a scholarship request form. It is very important that financial concerns not keep any youth from participating. For more information or to register, visit [email protected].

Office of Finance

Farewell to LOGOS Church Management Update The Office of Finance is pleased to announce that Parish Data Systems (PDS) has been selected as the replacement for the LOGOS-II Church Management application. The contracts have been signed, and we will be moving forward with the training and implementation phase. PDS has been vetted by some of our current LOGOS-II users who have found it to be more user friendly and robust. The PDS application also has a basic safe environment module that stores an individual’s background check history. The diocese will work with PDS to expand this functionality. Once that work is completed, users will only have to enter data into a single system which will make their lives easier. We are going to implement the application over a six-month period, reviewing the results as we proceed. Users will be trained first. Michael Moore ([email protected]), the diocesan director of information technology, will oversee the implementation. Via online training, you can now familiarize yourself with the PDS application. A list of these webinars/videos will be emailed to current LOGOS-II users. WebEx access will be utilized to train those working in some areas, while face-to-face training will be planned for others. As with Intacct, it might be nice to establish a “User’s Forum” that would share tips, recommendations, and best practices. Please let us know if you would be interested in forming such a forum. It is our desire to give you tools and support to make your jobs easier and more rewarding. We cannot do this without your help. The project team is looking forward to working with you as we move forward. There will be additional communications at each critical segment of the project. As usual, if you have any questions or issues, please don’t hesitate to call me. Thank you, Tom Deignan Project Team Work: (207) 321-7852 Cell: (207) 730-9292
