The result is an asymmet- ric, bladelike design that provides flexible floor plates as well as a striking, 14-meter-high (46 ft) entrance plaza, an elegant reception area, natural stone floors and walls, and extensive glazing. The four-story podium houses public and retail services, a 550-seat restaurant, and a 100-seat cafeteria; the podium fa- cade is completely transparent, providing extensive natural light while increasing visibility and drawing passersby into the building. At 142 meters (466 ft), Tour CBX is Paris la Défense’s 14th tallest skyscraper. Its lowest office floor is on level five, which is at the same height as the tenth floor of adjacent buildings. The tower is chilled by ceiling-mounted fan-coil air-handling units. A security station provides closed-circuit television moni- toring, and access to all private areas is controlled by electronic badges. The structure was the first in France to feature destination-control elevators linked to the access identification system. These elevators are so efficient that only two banks of five elevators were required, reducing the size of the core and in- creasing the size and improving the efficiency of the floor plates.
