To the President of the European Commission Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen, Rue de la Loi / Wetstraat 200 1049 Brussels To the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Mr. Vladis Dombrovskis Rue de la Loi / Wetstraat 200 1049 Brussels Brussels, 22 October 2020, Subject: the EU must impose an import ban on Chinese companies using forced labour Dear President von der Leyen, Dear Vice-President Dombrovskis, For years, the Chinese regime has been detaining millions of human beings in camps, just because they were born Uyghurs. For years, Europe and the world have been witnessing a crime against humanity without opposing any resistance to it. In recent months, several studies have reported the use of Uyghur forced labour for the benefit of major European companies. Indeed, many Chinese factories, directly supplying EU brands exploit the Uyghurs and benefit from their forced labour. Facing this abjection, Europe must act to protect the lives and fundamental rights of Uyghurs. The EU should use its trade and market power to safeguards the founding principles enrichened in our Treaties and guiding our external policies. As the US did lately through an imports ban passed almost unanimously in the US House of Representatives, Europe urgently needs to establish a blacklist of Chinese companies implicated in Uyghur forced labour. We look forward to your response. Yours sincerely, 1. Raphaël Glucksmann, S&D 2. Dietmar Köster, S&D 3. Francisco Guerreiro, Greens 4. Sylvie Guillaume, S&D 5. Aurore Lalucq, S&D 6. The European Elections of May 2019 Electoral systems and outcomes STUDY EPRS | European Parliamentary Research Service Kai Friederike Oelbermann and Friedrich Pukelsheim PE 652.037 – July 2020 EN The European Elections of May 2019 Electoral systems and outcomes This EPRS study provides an overview of the electoral systems and outcomes in the May 2019 elections to the European Parliament. It analyses the procedural details of how parties and candidates register their participation, how votes are cast, how valid votes are converted into seats, and how seats are assigned to candidates. For each Member State the paper describes the ballot structure and vote pattern used, the apportionment of seats among the Member State’s domestic parties, and the assignment of the seats of a party to its candidates. It highlights aspects that are common to all Member States and captures peculiarities that are specific to some domestic provisions. • Subject: Urgent Evacuation of Afghan Staff Working for EU Missions and Programmes
Subject: urgent evacuation of Afghan staff working for EU missions and programmes Brussels, 25 August 2021 Dear President Von der Leyen, Dear HR/VP Borrell, We write you to express our highest possible concern about the progress of the evacuation efforts of Afghan former staff of EU missions and programmes currently still present in Afghanistan. Given the rapid deterioration and unpredictability of the situation in the country, it is of utmost importance that the EU coordinates a rapid and inclusive evacuation of all persons who cooperated with the EU as they are under a direct life-threatening situation after the Taliban takeover. Especially given the potential deadline set by the Taliban for international troops to leave the country by Aug. 31, great uncertainty exists about the situation subsequent this date. Access to Kabul International Airport as well as the overall security situation in the country are likely to even further deteriorate, making evacuation efforts considerably harder, if not impossible. Therefore, the EU should use everything within its merit to evacuate as many persons as possible before this date. However, worrying signals are reaching us about the pace of the EU’s evacuation efforts of Afghan former mission staff. A concrete example is the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL), where many of the former local staff is still present in the country and under Taliban threat. We were informed that a list of 131 persons (former EUPOL staff and their family members) was submitted by the former head of mission already in July, but CSDP administration allegedly is still working on the bureaucratic requirements for the departure of these persons.

  • To: Charles Michel, President of the European Council Ursula Von Der Leyen, President of the European Commission
To: Charles Michel, President of the European Council Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission Brussels, 30 March 2021 Dear President Von der Leyen, Dear President Michel, Ahead of your meeting with the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that should take place on 6 April, we would like to raise our major concerns about the permanent dismantlement of human rights and democratic norms in Turkey. You are well aware of the internal crackdown on human rights defenders and all opinion dissidents, on the executive interferences in the judiciary as well as on the permanent restrictions on freedoms of expression, media and assembly. The recent withdrawal from the Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence is one more illustration of the continuing decline of fundamental freedoms in Turkey. But beyond this, Turkey does not hesitate to carry out actions within the EU going so far as to threaten the death of European citizens. The Belgian citizen Bahar Kimyongür constantly receive threats while he has been mentioned in a “wanted list” issued by the Turkish Ministry of Interior since February 2018, and granting a reward of 2 million Turkish Liras for any information leading to his capture. Sevim Dagdelen, deputy leader of the Left parliamentary group in Germany, is another well- known case. Although she does not figure in the “wanted list”, she often receives threats and lives under police protection for years. In Austria, last January, a Turkish agent was deported. He claimed himself that he had been charged with killing three political figures opposed to the current Turkish President, one of them is Berivan Aslan.
