THE POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION ON THE COASTAL ZONE OF GHANA An Ecosystem Services Approach George Amoasah MSc Thesis in Environmental Sciences February 2010 Supervised by: Dr. Lars Hein Environmental Systems Analysis THE POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION ON THE COASTAL ZONE OF GHANA An Ecosystem Services Approach George Amoasah MSc Thesis in Environmental Sciences February 2010 No part of this thesis may be reproduced without contacting the Environmental Systems Analysis Group. Supervisor: Examiners: Dr. Lars Hein (ESA) 1.Dr. Lars Hein Wageningen University 2.Prof. Rik Leemans Environmental Systems Analysis Group PO Box 47 6700 AA Wageningen PREFACE This study examines and analyzes the potential impacts of Ghana‟s oil and gas exploration and production on its coastal ecosystems and coastal communities. It brings to bear both the environmental impacts and other related socio-economic consequences on the coastal dwellers. Also, it analyzes the nation‟s legislation ability to cope with the impacts from the oil and gas exploration. My interest in environmental issues started from my teenage when I became curious about the consequences of mining pollution in my native town, Obuasi. Over the years, this town had made Ghana the second highest gold producing country in Africa and till date the country is second only to South Africa on the continent. In the late 1970s, environmental issues were not on Ghana‟s priority agenda. As such, many environmental issues were taken for granted and this situation resulted in many negative environmental consequences on the local communities. In Obuasi, at first the company‟s long chimneys released daily huge quantities of aerosols into the atmosphere.

  • Catalogue of Type Specimens 4. Linnaean Specimens
Uppsala University Museum of Evolution Zoology section Catalogue of type specimens. 4. Linnaean specimens 1 UPPSALA UNIVERSITY, MUSEUM OF EVOLUTION, ZOOLOGY SECTION (UUZM) Catalogue of type specimens. 4. Linnaean specimens The UUZM catalogue of type specimens is issued in four parts: 1. C.P.Thunberg (1743-1828), Insecta 2. General zoology 3. Entomology 4. Linnaean specimens (this part) Unlike the other parts of the type catalogue this list of the Linnaean specimens is heterogenous in not being confined to a physical unit of material and in not displaying altogether specimens qualifying as types. Two kinds of links connect the specimens in the list: one is a documented curatorial tradition referring listed material to collections handled and described by Carl von Linné, the other is associated with the published references by Linné to literary or material sources for which specimens are available in the Uppsala University Zoological Museum. The establishment of material being 'Linnaean' or not (for the ultimate purpose of a typification) involves a study of the history of the collections and a scrutiny of individual specimens. An important obstacle to an unequivocal interpretation is, in many cases, the fact that Linné did not label any of the specimens included in the present 'Linnaean collection' in Uppsala (at least there are no surviving labels or inscriptions with his handwriting or referable to his own marking of specimens; a single exception will be pointed out below in the historical survey). A critical examination must thus be based on the writings of Linné, a consideration of the relation between between these writings and the material at hand, and finally a technical and archival scrutiny of the curatorial arrangements that have been made since Linné's time.

  • Exotic Molluscs in the Mediterranean Basin: Current Status and Perspectives
Oceanography and Marine Biology: an Annual Review 2003, 41, 237–277 © R.N. Gibson and R.J.A. Atkinson, Editors Taylor & Francis EXOTIC MOLLUSCS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN: CURRENT STATUS AND PERSPECTIVES SERGE GOFAS1 & ARGYRO ZENETOS2 1Departamento de Biologia animal, Facultad de Ciencias – E-29071 Málaga, Spain e-mail: [email protected] 2National Centre for Marine Research, P.O. Box 712, Mavro Lithari, GR-19013 Anavissos, Greece e-mail: [email protected] Abstract An updated synthesis is presented for the records of introduced Mollusca in the Mediterranean basin. The rationale for taking molluscan records as significant is discussed. The Mediterranean Sea, with some 1800 native species of Mollusca, currently houses 139 exotic species, of which 85 form established populations, 52 are aliens recorded once or twice, and two are questionable. Ten species (the gastropods Cerithium scabridum, Rhinoclavis kochi, Strom- bus persicus and Bursatella leachi and the bivalves Pinctada radiata and Brachidontes pharao- nis in the eastern Mediterranean, the gastropod Rapana venosa and the bivalves Anadara inaequivalvis, Musculista senhousia, and Xenostrobus securis in the northern Adriatic and the western Mediterranean lagoons) are locally invasive. The bulk of the introduced species (118 species, of which 70 are established, 46 aliens, and two questionable) are species of Indo–Pacific origin found mainly in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean. Among these species, some which live in the Suez Canal are most likely to have spread by their own means through this waterway (these are the “lessepsian immigrants” in the most restricted sense). For other species, the intervention of transport by ship hulls or ballast water can be suspected.

VOL.35 z NO.1 z z april 2OO5 Page 2 PALLIDULA COVER PAGE A superb pair of live collected Neptunea antiqua (Linnaeus 1758), trawled 30 miles off Penzance in September 2004. The first specimen measures 170.2mm and the second 175.1mm. Now in the collection of John Fisher. PALLIDULA Page 3 SHELLING IN THE ALGARVE by Graham Saunders I first visited the Algarve in 1978, again in 1997 and most recently for a week at the end of May 2004, each time staying in more or less the same place, although it has changed out of recognition. Comparisons are difficult. I did not find one of the unique sites and a couple of formerly abundant species are now hard to find. I suspect that the vast colony of Conus mediterraneus Hwass, 1792, which I once saw on a tidal mud flat behind Faro Airport may still exist if one can actually find it, but no trace of the species was seen during recent searches. There are still enough fresh dead examples of Mesalia brevialis (Lamarck, 1822) to demonstrate its continued survival in the area. I suspect both are pocket populations seeded by eggs carried on the feet of wading birds. The habitat is not typical for Conus mediterraneus Hwass, 1792, but the species is so variable that these are probably the same. I am less certain about the Mesalia as they are smaller and more delicate than the West African population. DNA and life cycle comparison would clarify their status. Debate amongst "experts" is not conclusive. I saw no trace of Littorinidae of any species during the recent visit.

ON THE PAIRED JSTEPHRIDIA OF PEOSOJ3RANCHB. 587 On the Paired Nephridia of Prosobranchs, the Homologies of the only remaining Nephri- dium of most Prosobranchs, and the Re- lations of the Nephridia to the Gonad and Genital Duct. By Dr. R. v. Erlanger. With Plates XXXVI and XXXVII. INTRODUCTORY AND HISTORICAL PART. BY the study of the development of Prosobranchs and fresh-water Pulmonates, especially of Paludina vivipara (8), Bythinia tentaculata (9), and Planorbis corneus (10), I was led to adopt Professor Eay Lankester's (19) view on the homology of the only remaining kidney or nephridium of most Prosobranchs. I found that the kidney of Paludina and Bythinia, which in the adult lies to the left of the anus, was, before the torsion takes place, situated to the right of the anus, and consequently must be homologous to the actual left kidney of Fissnrella, Patella, Haliotis, Trochus, &c. Whilst in so-called leiotropic species1 the actual kidney is the left one, it is just the contrary in dexiotropic species, such as Planorbis, where the actual right kidney is, before the torsion, situated to the left of the rectum. I also found in Paludina a rudiment of the actual right kidney lying before the torsion to the left of the rectum, and observed that its duct was converted into that of the genital gland. Comparing 1 Leiotropic would correspond to the German term "rechtsge- wunden,"as used by ooncliologists ; dexiotropic to " linksgewunden." 588 DR. E. V. EB.LANGER. this fact with the statement that the right kidney of Zygo- branchs and Cyclobranchs serves as a duct for the sexual products, I was led to the conclusion that the actual right kidney disappears or becomes highly modified, while its duct is converted into that of the genital gland.

Of the 105 species obtained stations, the most dominant species was Bittium reticulatum (26%) with 2226 specimens, followed by Mytilus galloprovincialis (11%) with 1022 specimens and Rissoa membranacea (8%) with 713 specimens, respectively. Shannon-Weaver’s Diversity Index (H'), Pielou’s Evenness Index (J’), Soyer’s Frequency Index (F), Bray-Curtis Similarity Index and Pearson's Correlation Analysis were applied to the benthic mollusc fauna. Diversity index values (between 1.71 and 4.43) and evenness index values (between 0.38 and 0.82) were determined in the area. According to Bray Curtis similarity analysis there were 3 distinct species assemblages in the area. The number of individuals, diversity index value, gastropoda and bivalvia species were also positively correlated with temperature.
