ABSTRACT The project considers the disparity between two case studies of “drag:” 1) “RuPauline drag” (RuPaul’s Drag Race, RuPaul, and affiliated properties), and 2) the House of LaBeija as a microcosm of ballroom drag, an international phenomenon comprised predominantly by queer and trans people of color (QTPOC) competing in self-hosted “balls.” These “cases” are assessed as ideal texts, that is, ideal types (heuristic and reductive) which are interpreted as texts (via hermeneutical methodology) in hopes of comparing the cases for the subjectivities they foster and the orientations they promulgate. This work begins with a comparison of the “cases” via the settings in which they occur, contrasting their relationship to and deployment of race, gender, class, and sex(uality), while the latter half examines their practices and professed values, via performance, ritual, kinship, and fantasy, for the orientations they create and sustain. Taken together, the comparison of these “cases” aims to resist the flat, cisgender-heterosexual-normative reading of “drag” as a homogenous practice and insists that the demarcation of certain subjects as “religious” further marginalizes and invalidates people and communities for whom drag holds an ultimate importance. -

Emotion, Femininity and Everyday Experience Straight Female Audience’s Perception of RuPaul’s Drag Race Student name: Yoshino Akizuki Student number: 509330 Supervisor: Balázs Boross Master Arts, Culture and Society Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam Master Thesis June 14, 2019 ABSTRACT An American reality TV program RuPaul’s Drag Race, in which drag queens compete with each other to be “America’s Next Drag Superstar,” has earned tremendous hit since it was first broadcast in 2009. Although Drag Race started as a niche program featuring drag queens and targeted only at the LGBTQ community, it is becoming a world-wide phenomenon in mainstream popular culture. Especially, straight female audiences have become a large percentage of the audience. However, why are straight women, who have not necessarily had a connection with drag culture, enthusiastic about Drag Race? Previous research on Drag Race are mainly textual analysis addressing particular issues such as race and ethnicity, social class, body shape and femininity (Darnell and Tabatabai, 2017; Edgar, 2011; Goldmark, 2015; LeMaster, 2015; Strings & Bui, 2014; Vesey, 2017). However, they lack the perspective of actual audience. And therefore, they do not explain the popularity among straight female audience. Since the audience of Drag Race has become increasingly diverse, different audiences interpret the contents differently. As Alasuutari (1999) explains using Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model, intended message from producers is not always received “correctly” by audiences. Therefore, it is significant to take into account the perspective of the audience. Furthermore, as Bird (2003) suggests audiences critically and actively interpret the message and put them in the context of everyday experience, we should closely examine the process of meaning-making. -

Rodriguez, UC Riverside Assistant Professor Amanda Ciafone i ABSTRACT In this dissertation, I consider the television show RuPaul’s Drag Race and the vast web of digital and broadcast media productions it has spawned, as a means to explore the changing cultural, technological, and economic conditions that have allowed for the emergence of a widespread queer media economy in which it is currently positioned as a central touchstone and engine of production and productivity. I seek to understand the history and evolution of the changing economics and production practices of the reality television genre that led to the emergence of (and have been deployed, tweaked, and recirculated by) the semi-satirical Drag Race; to better understand its position, as a “broadcast” cable television show, in a wider network of “new” and “spreadable” social media enterprises flowing into and out of it; to analyze the artistic, aesthetic, ethical and ascetic technologies of the self practiced by the contestants on the show, alongside a genealogical account of their origins in queer spaces and subcultures; and to explore the show’s position in a wider television landscape, asking how it is related to other programs of the current conjuncture, its technologization and commodification of a queer mode of belonging, and its relationships to virtual and material queer spaces as a globalized cultural technology.
