Aunque se ha escrito mucho sobre la crisis «del sistema», esta tiene como correlato una inédita dificultad para imaginar otros mundos posibles. El filósofo Fredric Jameson lo resumió con una frase contundente: hoy «es más fácil imaginar el fin del mundo que el fin del capi- talismo». Las reconfiguraciones políticas de los últimos años ameritan un examen y una reflexión sobre el pensamiento crítico y las experiencias de cambio actuales, en un registro que preste atención a las experiencias políticas y gubernamentales así como a la producción teórica, dos esferas cada vez más distanciadas. El mapeo de Razmig Keucheyan permite visualizar algunos elementos para abordar el estado actual de las denominadas «teorías críticas», entre cuyos rasgos más o menos novedosos están la «norteamericanización», la profesionalización de sus impulsores, el giro hacia la abstracción y el fin de la hegemonía marxista. Todo ello tiene como sustrato los esfuerzos por revertir la «Derrota», para lo cual se ensayaron nuevos sin- cretismos ideológicos, se apeló a la teología o se buscó dar más envergadura a las «batallas secundarias» de la izquierda clásica, como las luchas feministas, ecologistas o en defensa de la diversidad sexual. Estas articulaciones de acción y de sentidos, como recuerda Laura Fernández Cordero, no fueron ni son sencillas (ni en la teoría ni en la práctica). Por otro lado, la creciente desconexión entre los productores de teoría crítica y los espacios de acción política propiamente dichos plantea nuevos problemas y dibuja límites. Los casos analizados confirman las dificultades. Khatchik Der Ghougassian muestra los obstáculos que, tras la Guerra Fría, enfrenta la socialdemocracia en Europa, pero también la profunda debilidad de la izquierda democrática en el espacio de la ex- Unión Soviética y las luces y sombras del «giro a la izquierda» latinoamericano, hoy desafiado por nuevas derechas y centroderechas que han comenzado a levantar las bandera del cambio, hasta ahora casi monopolio de las fuerzas progresistas. The sum exceeds Greece’s total debt of €240 billion to the EU. “According to our calculations, the debt linked to German reparations is €278.7 billion euros, including €10.3 billion for the so-called forced loan. All the other amounts are related to allowances for individuals or infrastructure,” said the country’s deputy finance minister, Dimitris Mardas. The figure was calculated by a parliamentary committee and the Greek supreme court. The numbers have previously varied between €269 billion and €332 billion. Mardas added that at the 1946 Paris Conference the amount of reparations was set at $341.2 billion. In response, Gabriel Sigmar, Germany’s economy minister and vice chancellor, described Greece’s demand as “stupid.” He said he suspected the demand was just the country’s attempt to squeeze some money from Eurozone countries to resolve its own debt crisis problems. “And this leeway has absolutely nothing to do with World War II or reparation payments,” he said.

    Institutions in Crisis CRISIS OF PURPOSE IN THE IVY LEAGUE The Harvard Presidency of Lawrence Summers and the Context of American Higher Education Rebecca Dunning and Anne Sarah Meyers In 2001, Lawrence Summers became the 27th president of Harvard Univer- sity. Five tumultuous years later, he would resign. The popular narrative of Summers’ troubled tenure suggests that a series of verbal indiscretions created a loss of confidence in his leadership, first among faculty, then students, alumni, and finally Harvard’s trustee bodies. From his contentious meeting with the faculty of the African and African American Studies Department shortly af- ter he took office in the summer of 2001, to his widely publicized remarks on the possibility of innate gender differences in mathematical and scientific aptitude, Summers’ reign was marked by a serious of verbal gaffes regularly reported in The Harvard Crimson, The Boston Globe, and The New York Times. The resignation of Lawrence Summers and the sense of crisis at Harvard may have been less about individual personality traits, however, and more about the context in which Summers served. Contestation in the areas of university governance, accountability, and institutional purpose conditioned the context within which Summers’ presidency occurred, influencing his appointment as Harvard’s 27th president, his tumultuous tenure, and his eventual departure. Introduction Many of us remain unaware that among the members of the American Philological Association (Society for Classical Studies since 2014) during the latter half of the nine- teenth century were people of African and African American descent, for little or noth- ing had been written about them before the American Philological Association published my pamphlet, The First Three African American Members of the American Philological Association in 2001. We have, however, understood for some time that Americans from the late eighteenth century through the nineteenth century were engaged in heated argu- ments about the appropriate type of education needed by Americans in general, and particularly over the needs of the newly-freed slaves after the Civil War. Yanis Varoufakis clearly claims to have played a major role in working out the strategy adopted by a handful of Syriza leaders âEuros" Alexis Tsipras, Yanis Dragasakis, and Nikkos Pappas, essentially âEuros" before their victory in the January 2015 election. Varoufakis does not plead guilty. He is convinced that had Tsipras actually taken the orientation he proposed and which Tsipras had agreed to late in 2014, the result would not have been defeat for the Greek people. Contrary to the conviction Varoufakis expresses, an attentive reading of his book leads to the conclusion that he contributed to that defeat Varoufakis explains how he gradually convinced Tsipras, Pappas, and Dragasakis not to follow the orientation adopted by Syriza in 2012, then in 2014.
