Tungabhadra River is an important tributary of Krishna. It has a drainage area of 71,417 sq km out of which 57,671 sq. km area lies in the state of Karnataka. The study was conducted to measure its various physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters including levels of algal K eywo rd s community. Pollution in water bodies may indicate the environment of algal nutrients in water. They may also function as indicators of pollution. The present Phytoplankton, investigation is an attempt to know the pollution load through algal indicators in multiplicity, Tungabhadra river of Karnataka near Harihar town. The study has been conducted Tungabhadra from May 2008 to April 2009. The tolerant genera and species of four groups of river. algae namely, Chlorophyceae, Bacilleriophyceae, Cyanaophyceae and Euglenophyceae indicate that total algal population is 17,715 in station No. S3, which has the influence of industrial pollution by Harihar Polyfibre and Grasim industry situated on the bank of the river which are discharging its treated effluent to this river. -

Chapter 2 Physical features 2.1 Geographical Disposition The Pennar (Somasila) – Palar - Cauvery (Grand Anicut) link canal off takes from the existing Somasila reservoir located across the Pennar River near Somasila village in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh state. The link canal is proposed to pass through the Kaluvaya, Rapur, Dakkili, Venkatagiri mandals of Nellore district; Srikalahasti, Thottambedu, Pitchattur and Nagari mandals of Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh state, Tiruttani taluk of Tiruvallur district; Arakonam taluk of Vellore district; Cheyyar and Vandavasi taluks of Tiruvannamalai district; Kancheepuram, Uthiramerur taluks of Kancheepuram district; Tindivanam, Gingee, Villupuram, Tirukoilur taluks of Villupuram district; Ulundurpettai, Vridhachalam, Tittagudi taluks of Cuddalore district; Udaiyarpalayam, Ariyalur taluk of Perambalur district; and Lalgudi taluk of Tiruchchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu state.The link canal alignment passes through Pennar basin, Streams between Pennar and Palar basins, Palar basin and streams between Palar and Cauvery basins. The link canal takes off from the right flank of Somasila dam with a full supply level of 95.420 m. and runs parallel on right side of the Kandaleru flood flow canal, upto RD 10 km. The canal generally runs in south direction till it out-falls into Grand Anicut across Cauvery River at RD 529.190 km. The major rivers that would be crossed by the canal are Swarnamukhi, Arani Ar, Nagari, Palar, Cheyyar, Ponnaiyar, and Vellar. The districts that would be benefited by the link canal through enroute irrigation are Nellore, Chittoor of Andhra Pradesh state and Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadu state and Pondicherry (U.T). -

Tungabhadra Dam

Key Point About: Tungabhadra dam also known as Pampa Sagar is a multipurpose dam built across Tungabhadra River in Hosapete, Ballari district of Karnataka. It was built by Dr. Thirumalai Iyengar in 1953. Tungabhadra reservoir has a storage capacity of 101 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic feet) with catchment area spreading to 28000 square kms. It is about 49.5 meters in height. Importance: It is the life-line of 6 chronically drought prone districts of Bellary, Koppal and Raichur in Karnataka (popularly known as the rice bowl of Karnataka) and Anantapur, Cuddapah and Kurnool in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Besides irrigating vast patches of land in the two states, it also generates hydel power and helps prevent floods. 1/2 Tungabhadra River It is a sacred river in southern India that flows through the state of Karnataka to Andhra Pradesh. The ancient name of the river was Pampa. The river is approximately 710 km long, and it drains an area of 72,200 sq km. It is formed by the confluence of two rivers, the Tunga River and the Bhadra River. Both Tunga & Bhadra Rivers originate on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. The greater part of the Tungabhadra’s course lies in the southern part of the Deccan plateau. The river is fed mainly by rain, and it has a monsoonal regimen with summer high water. It’s Major tributaries are the Bhadra, the Haridra, the Vedavati, the Tunga, the Varda and the Kumdavathi. -
