We outline Einstein’s Equations which describes the geometry of spacetime due to the influence of mass, and from there derive the Schwarzschild metric. The metric relies on the curvature of spacetime to provide a means of measuring invariant spacetime intervals around an isolated, static, and spherically symmetric mass M, which could represent a star or a black hole. Furthermore, in this context, universal thermodynamics in the FLRW model has been analyzed using the notion of the Kodama vector. Finally, some general conclusions have been drawn. Introduction A black hole is a region of space-time from which all future directed null geodesics fail to reach the future null infinity I+. More specifically, the black hole region B of the space-time manifold M is the set of all events P that do not belong to the causal past of future null infinity, i.e., B = M − J−(I+). (1) Here, J−(I+) denotes the causal past of I+, i.e., it is the set of all points that causally precede I+. The boundary of the black hole region is termed as the event horizon (H), H = ¶B = ¶(J−(I+)). (2) A cross-section of the horizon is a 2D surface H(S) obtained by intersecting the event horizon with a space-like hypersurface S. As event the horizon is a causal boundary, it must be a null hypersurface generated by null geodesics that have no future end points. In the black hole region, there are trapped surfaces that are closed 2-surfaces (S) such that both ingoing and outgoing congruences of null geodesics are orthogonal to S, and the expansion scalar is negative everywhere on S. -

Answer to Essential Question 26.1: (a) The obvious answer is that you are at rest. However, the question really only makes sense when we ask what the speed is measured with respect to. Typically, we measure our speed with respect to the Earth’s surface. If you answer this question while traveling on a plane, for instance, you might say that your speed is 500 km/h. Even then, however, you would be justified in saying that your speed is zero, because you are probably at rest with respect to the plane. (b) Your speed with respect to a point on the Earth’s axis depends on your latitude. At the latitude of New York City (40.8° north) , for instance, you travel in a circular path of radius equal to the radius of the Earth (6380 km) multiplied by the cosine of the latitude, which is 4830 km. You travel once around this circle in 24 hours, for a speed of 350 m/s (at a latitude of 40.8° north, at least). (c) The radius of the Earth’s orbit is 150 million km. The Earth travels once around this orbit in a year, corresponding to an orbital speed of 3 ! 104 m/s. This sounds like a high speed, but it is too small to see an appreciable effect from relativity. 26-2 Spacetime and the Spacetime Interval We usually think of time and space as being quite different from one another. In relativity, however, we link time and space by giving them the same units, drawing what are called spacetime diagrams, and plotting trajectories of objects through spacetime. -

Chapter 5 The Relativistic Point Particle To formulate the dynamics of a system we can write either the equations of motion, or alternatively, an action. In the case of the relativistic point par- ticle, it is rather easy to write the equations of motion. But the action is so physical and geometrical that it is worth pursuing in its own right. More importantly, while it is difficult to guess the equations of motion for the rela- tivistic string, the action is a natural generalization of the relativistic particle action that we will study in this chapter. We conclude with a discussion of the charged relativistic particle. 5.1 Action for a relativistic point particle How can we find the action S that governs the dynamics of a free relativis- tic particle? There is a shift towards applying mathematical concepts and skills in the context of authentic problems and for the student to understand concepts rather than merely follow a sequence of procedures. In mathematics classrooms, students will learn to think critically in a mathematical way with an understanding that there are many different ways to a solution and sometimes more than one right answer in applied mathematics. Mathematics is the economy of information. The central idea of all mathematics is to discover how knowing some things well, via reasoning, permit students to know much else—without having to commit the information to memory as a separate fact. It is the reasoned, logical connections that make mathematics coherent. The implementation of the Georgia Standards of Excellence in Mathematics places a greater emphasis on sense making, problem solving, reasoning, representation, connections, and communication. History of Mathematics History of Mathematics is a one-semester elective course option for students who have completed AP Calculus or are taking AP Calculus concurrently. It traces the development of major branches of mathematics throughout history, specifically algebra, geometry, number theory, and methods of proofs, how that development was influenced by the needs of various cultures, and how the mathematics in turn influenced culture. The course extends the numbers and counting, algebra, geometry, and data analysis and probability strands from previous courses, and includes a new history strand. -

1 A Two-Dimensional Comparison of Differential Calculus and Differential Geometry Andrew Grossfield, Ph.D Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology Abstract and Introduction: Plane geometry is mainly the study of the properties of polygons and circles. Differential geometry is the study of curves that can be locally approximated by straight line segments. Differential calculus is the study of functions. These functions of calculus can be viewed as single-valued branches of curves in a coordinate system where the horizontal variable controls the vertical variable. In both studies the derivative multiplies incremental changes in the horizontal variable to yield incremental changes in the vertical variable and both studies possess the same rules of differentiation and integration. It seems that the two studies should be identical, that is, isomorphic. And, yet, students should be aware of important differences. In differential geometry, the horizontal and vertical units have the same dimensional units. In differential calculus the horizontal and vertical units are usually different, e.g., height vs. time. There are differences in the two studies with respect to the distance between points. In differential geometry, the Pythagorean slant distance formula prevails, while in the 2- dimensional plane of differential calculus there is no concept of slant distance. The derivative has a different meaning in each of the two subjects. In differential geometry, the slope of the tangent line determines the direction of the tangent line; that is, the angle with the horizontal axis. In differential calculus, there is no concept of direction; instead, the derivative describes a rate of change. In differential geometry the line described by the equation y = x subtends an angle, α, of 45° with the horizontal, but in calculus the linear relation, h = t, bears no concept of direction. -

20. GEOMETRY OF THE CIRCLE PARTS OF THE CIRCLE Segments When we speak of a circle we may be referring to the plane figure itself or the boundary of the shape, called the circumference. In solving problems involving the circle, we must be familiar with several theorems. In order to understand these theorems, we review the names given to parts of a circle. Diameter and chord The region that is encompassed between an arc and a chord is called a segment. The region between the chord and the minor arc is called the minor segment. The region between the chord and the major arc is called the major segment. If the chord is a diameter, then both segments are equal and are called semi-circles. The straight line joining any two points on the circle is called a chord. Sectors A diameter is a chord that passes through the center of the circle. It is, therefore, the longest possible chord of a circle. In the diagram, O is the center of the circle, AB is a diameter and PQ is also a chord. Arcs The region that is enclosed by any two radii and an arc is called a sector. Closed Timelike Curves, Singularities and Causality: A Survey from Gödel to Chronological Protection Jean-Pierre Luminet Aix-Marseille Université, CNRS, Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille , France; Centre de Physique Théorique de Marseille (France) Observatoire de Paris, LUTH (France) [email protected] Abstract: I give a historical survey of the discussions about the existence of closed timelike curves in general relativistic models of the universe, opening the physical possibility of time travel in the past, as first recognized by K. Gödel in his rotating universe model of 1949. I emphasize that journeying into the past is intimately linked to spacetime models devoid of timelike singularities. Since such singularities arise as an inevitable consequence of the equations of general relativity given physically reasonable assumptions, time travel in the past becomes possible only when one or another of these assumptions is violated. It is the case with wormhole-type solutions. S. Hawking and other authors have tried to save the paradoxical consequences of time travel in the past by advocating physical mechanisms of chronological protection; however, such mechanisms remain presently unknown, even when quantum fluctuations near horizons are taken into account. I close the survey by a brief and pedestrian discussion of Causal Dynamical Triangulations, an approach to quantum gravity in which causality plays a seminal role. Introduction In 1949, the mathematician and logician Kurt Gödel, who had previously demonstrated the incompleteness theorems that broke ground in logic, mathematics, and philosophy, became interested in the theory of general relativity of Albert Einstein, of which he became a close colleague at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.
